Political Thought and History: Essays on Theory and Method, by J. G .A. Pocock

John Pocock is arguably the most original and imaginative historian of ideas of modern times. Over the past half century he has created an audience for his work which is truly global, and he has marked the way in which the history of political thought is studied as deeply and personally as any historian of the period. The essays in this major new collection are selected from a lifetime of thinking about political thought, and how we should study it in history. What in fact does it mean to write the history of a political society, and what kind of political thought is this? Professor Pocock emphasises both the theory and practice of political thought considered as action in history, and the political theory of historiography considered as a form of political thought. Together these essays constitute a collection that any serious student of politics and intellectual history needs to possess.

It's ok, but...
By Bob Atwood
The book arrived, new as advertised. My biggest problem, is that there are certain components on my machine, from the factory, that are NOT in this book. The carb expolded views (two different ones) are not representative of my carburetor. Wasn't much help in that regard. Also, I have a huge issue with the book as it keeps say things like 'as is the specifications in this section' and yet there are not any spec's with regard to jet settings, idle/air screw settings or pilot jet. Really torqued me off, as this was the one area I really wanted to book for.

Good reference book
By Miss J
Good beginners reference book for those new to manual drafting (who manual drafts anymore?) or reading construction docs. It's a good starter/supplement to in-class instruction. One thing I noticed is the line weights & methods of depicted certain things in the example drawings are not always consistent, but as explained by my instructor that's bc there are some things that are not hard "rules" in drafting. I use it for the info given in the text. I've read quite a few construction docs but never put together my own set so this was helpful. It probably won't be in my library past college, but for now it is a go-to book

This is a good textbook for learning how to hand draft--I took a drafting class from the author's husband.
Some of the information isn't as clear as it could be so if you are just beginning to learn how to draft I would supplement this with another drafting textbook.

Colonel Roosevelt, by Edmund Morris

This biography by Edmund Morris, the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning author of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex, marks the completion of a trilogy sure to stand as definitive. Of all our great presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is the only one whose greatness increased out of office. What other president has written forty books, hunted lions, founded a third political party, survived an assassin’s bullet, and explored an unknown river longer than the Rhine? Packed with more adventure, variety, drama, humor, and tragedy than a big novel, yet documented down to the smallest fact, this masterwork recounts the last decade of perhaps the most amazing life in American history.

From Bookmarks Magazine
“Now with Colonel Roosevelt,” announced the New York Times, “the magnum opus is complete.” Morris’s balanced examination of the final years of Roosevelt’s life highlights the slow but inexorable waning of his political and, ultimately, physical power. Equally adept at political explication and recounting adventure tales, Morris injects new life, and even suspense, into some familiar stories with his wry, minimalist prose—perfectly suited to his subject’s volatile personality—and an abundance of rich detail grounded in meticulous research. Although the Wall Street Journal took issue with Morris’s political analysis, that critic still considered Colonel Roosevelt a poignant and factual account of the 26th President’s post–White House years. A tour de force befitting its seismic subject, Colonel Roosevelt brings this extraordinary trilogy to a triumphant end.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Morris completes his fully detailed, correlatively dynamic triptych of the restless, energetic, on-the-move first President Roosevelt, following The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (1979), the title self-explanatory in terms of its coverage of TR’s life, and Theodore Rex (2001), about his presidency. Now the author presents Colonel Roosevelt, the title by which Roosevelt chose to be called during his postpresidential years (in reference, of course, to his military position during the Spanish-American War). This is the sad part of TR’s life; this is the stage of his life story in which it is most difficult to accept his self-absorption, self-importance, and self-righteousness, but it is the talent of the author, who has shown an immaculate understanding of his subject, to make Roosevelt of continued fascination to his readers. In essence, this volume tells the story of TR’s path of disenchantment with his chosen successor in the White House, William Taft, and his attempt to resecure the presidency for himself. The important theme of TR’s concomitant decline in health is also a part of the narrative. We are made aware most of all that of all retired presidents, TR was the least likely to fade into the background. --Brad Hooper

Review
“Monumental . . . Morris is a stylish storyteller with an irresistible subject.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Colonel Roosevelt is compelling reading, and [Edmund] Morris is a brilliant biographer who practices his art at the highest level. . . . The writing is vivid in its restraint, powerful in its precision and shapely in its structure and vision. Morris has a way of making aspects of Roosevelt’s life and values relevant in both dark and bright ways. A moving, beautifully rendered account of Roosevelt’s near-death by assassination during the campaign of 1912 resonated for this reader with all the emotion of the assassinations of our recent history.”—Fred Kaplan, The Washington Post

“Hair-raising . . . awe-inspiring . . . a worthy close to a trilogy sure to be regarded as one of the best studies not just of any president, but of any American.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Reading Edmund Morris on Theodore Roosevelt is like listening to Yo-Yo Ma play Bach: you know from the first note you’re in inspired hands.”—The Washingtonian

“[A] splendid and indispensable study of America’s twenty-sixth president . . . Morris is a superb chronicler of Roosevelt’s busy, peripatetic life. . . . Abraham Lincoln may embody America’s soul, but Theodore Roosevelt has America’s heart.”—Chicago Tribune

Praise for the classic biographies of Edmund Morris

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

“One of those rare works that is both definitive for the period it covers and fascinating to read for sheer entertainment.”—The New York Times Book Review

“A towering biography.”—Time

Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography

“A masterpiece . . . A great president has finally found a great biographer.”—The Washington Post

“As a literary work on Theodore Roosevelt, it is unlikely ever to be surpassed. It is one of the great histories of the American presidency, worthy of being on a shelf alongside Henry Adams’s volumes on Jefferson and Madison.”—Times Literary Supplement

“Magnificent . . .  a compulsively readable, beautifully measured and paced account.”—Chicago Tribune

There was one Hell of a Man!
By David D. Lawson
This is the 3rd and last of the bios of TR by Mr. Morris. While I liked "Theodore Rex" better. This book is still an excellent book about one of Americas best Presidents and his time after leaving the White House.

Bottom line - the time left to him (1908-19) was not spent laying around and writings his memoirs. Not this guy! While I shall not bore with the long list of stuff that he did to keep busy. Let us say that most real men would be extremely happy to have done half the stuff in their entire life. Which T.R. did in those few years left to him. He really was a steamroller in Trousers. I myself would like to have what one man said about his death. "Roosevelt must of been asleep when he died. Or there would of been a fight."

Fantastic Conclusion on an American Colossus
By Matthew Ries
Edmund Morris' final volume in his biographical trilogy of Theodore Roosevelt, Colonel Roosevelt, is a fantastic conclusion about this colossus in American history. Morris' writing is an easy read and his research top notch thus making this a wonderful book for students of history of any age. Though like the previous volume of this trilogy, Theodore Rex, the book seems to be stylistically divided in two with the first stronger than the second.

Beginning with a wonderful prologue describing T.R.'s African safari, the first half Colonel Roosevelt shows Roosevelt seemingly having all the power and prestige of the Presidency without being in office. His 1910 tour of European, including being the U.S. special ambassador at Edward VII's funeral, looks like a victory tour even now like it seemed to be then. However, upon his return home Roosevelt starts to become disillusioned with this chosen successor William Howard Taft. This disillusionment turned into disgust and Roosevelt aimed to unseat Taft only for the Republican establishment to prevent his nomination in 1912 resulting in a party split. Even acknowledging defeat Roosevelt campaigned hard to score the best showing every by a third party candidate, showing up Taft in the process.

After 1912 not only does Roosevelt seemed to decline, but so Morris stylistic prose. The second half of the book begins with the South American expedition that almost cost him his life, however it relating what happened Morris seems to give the reader an overview of what it about to happen to his subject and the style of the book starts to feel melancholy. While Morris shows Roosevelt's resolve to prepare the country for entry into The Great War, he also shows how Roosevelt was losing is once famous balancing between extremes. The death of Quentin heavily foreshadowed almost in league with the stylistic change, Roosevelt's own death.

The epilogue of Roosevelt's funeral followed by the course of his place in history along with short biographies on his wife and family, is welcome stylistic change as Morris looks over the course of nearly 90 years to see how Roosevelt's 60 year life is viewed and did so in great effect.

After the first two volumes of this trilogy it was hard for me to give this book only 4 stars, however the second half of Colonel Roosevelt saw seemed so much of a disconnected with the first half and the epilogue that it was jarring. This stylist change could have been all in my own head as I knew where Roosevelt's journey was taking him, but there did seem to be change especially in comparing the second half to the epilogue. However, as I stated in the opening paragraph Morris writing and his research are first rate and I can not recommend this final volume of his T.R. trilogy enough.

Powerful conclusion to Morris' trilogy
By Steven Peterson
A wonderful conclusion to Edmund Morris' trilogy, the biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Here he is, warts and all (and there are surely warts to be seen).

The work starts off after TR has left the White House to become "citizen Roosevelt." We see him leaving for an African tour, replete with many animal trophies from his hunting prowess. He made a tour of Europe, in which he was hailed by national leaders of all stripes--from monarchs to democratically elected officials. The visits from one country to another were a great event in the Old World, with TR being lionized. Some of his speeches ruffled feathers, as he was not always diplomatic. But that seemed itself to energize responses to him. One chapter, indeed, is entitled "The Most Famous Man in the World."

Upon his return to the United States, we learn of the slow dissolution of his relationship with then President William Howard Taft. The two were simply very different people, with distinct temperaments, energy levels, and policy views. What was a rift became a chasm, and the book tells the story well of how Roosevelt and Taft went from somewhat friendly to political enemies, culminating in TR's quixotic bid to win the Republican nomination in 1912. Roosevelt felt that Taft had betrayed key principles of progressivism and sought to wrest party control away from Taft and his allies. The political turbulence described in the book also includes Roosevelt's effort to reform the New York state Republican policy; he ended up bruised and defeated. The point? Roosevelt had a hard time getting politics out of his blood.

After his failure to win the Republican nomination, of course, he rapidly (and it appears nearly miraculous that he did it with the help of key supporters) created a "third party" and ran as what came to be called the "Bull Moose party." He understood that he was unlikely to win, but felt that the effort was necessary for the political system. The end result? Woodrow Wilson became the first Democratic president since Grover Cleveland's second term.

The book continues with the post-election life of Roosevelt. He was proud that his sons joined the military in World War I, and experienced tragedy as a result. Then, the book concludes with his precipitous physical decline, stunning for one so physical and his death at sixty--the age at which he had predicted his own death so many years before.

Morris, as a biographer, can be idiosyncratic. He is capable of being very judgmental (note his negativity toward Taft). However, this work is extremely well done and concludes most successfully his mammoth biographical project.

Amazon.com Review
Author James Redfield takes readers to the mountains of Tibet in search of the mythical place called Shambhala, otherwise known as Shangri-La. Like his previous bestselling books, Redfield holds the tension between an adventure travel story (in this book, armed Chinese soldiers doggedly pursue him) and divine encounters. Rather than preach his spiritual beliefs, Redfield likes to portray himself as a naive pilgrim, receiving wisdom and insights from the various guides and teachers he meets on his metaphysical journeys.

Shambhala is indeed a paradise, just as it was lovingly portrayed in the famous James Hilton novel Lost Horizon. It is also a spiritual utopia, and Redfield takes great pleasure in pondering the possibilities of living in a culture that is entirely "focused on the life process." Residents explain their lifestyle, which has emerged from a completely spiritual culture, including some rather sensible opinions about technology, parenting, and even genetic testing. Meanwhile, Redfield remains the wide-eyed observer. Those who loved the characters, writing style, and epiphanies in The Celestine Prophecy will not be disappointed with Redfield's latest inspirational portrait of a new world order. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
The third book in the Celestine series, this slight fable begins with an appealing spiritual quest, but is soon burdened with Redfield's millennial concerns. Still, readers who made bestsellers of The Celestine Prophecy and The Tenth Insight are not likely to be deterred, especially those who are interested in Eastern wisdom. Instructed by a neighborhood girl to seek a place of total enlightenment, the narrator makes an imaginary journey to Tibet in search of Shambhala (also known as Shangri-La). Under constant threat by Chinese soldiers, he makes a harrowing passage with the help of human and spirit guides, ultimately reaching the kingdom where the secrets of "the eleventh insight" are revealed in stages. Based on the notion that we attract the events in our lives, the 11th insight reveals that prayer in the form of affirmations and positive energy can empower not only individuals, but whole societies. Readers will find value in Redfield's simply stated comments about building energy through nutrition, posture and thought, and refusing to erode one's energy through negative thinking, including hatred, anger and evil. Redfield believes that baby boomers, with their interest in the human potential movement, have the power to fulfill their generational mission (as their parents did with WWII) by using the 11th insight to counter negative social forces, such as lack of community, youth alienation, environmental destruction, terrorism, the power of centralized technology and genetic engineering of all stripes. Redfield's The Celestine Vision and The Tenth Insight were short books and, as audiobooks, released in unabridged and lightly abridged versions, respectively. The Secret of Shambhala is a longer work, and the publisher is offering abridged and unabridged recordings, both performed by LeVar Burton, who read Redfield's previous titles.

The Secret...Realize your Intentions
By Paul M. Murphy
The quote to intrigue and compel you to read this book: "You must understand that inside you is a great power that can be cultivated and extended, a mental energy that has always been called a prayer field." The term prayer field in this setting is in no way tangled up in the religious connotations, of kneeling down to prayer. As Chauncey Gardner said in the great movie starring Peter Sellers Being There, coincidently a very intuitive person, "you must learn to tend your garden." This book, in an entertaining novel way, begins to shine the light on how to do that. While it seems to be a Secret to too many folks, it's is my belief that really it's an intuitive reality that only needs to be, as I write in my book `Love is a Blooming Rose' awakened to.

This book takes James Redfield's points from his books Celestine Prophecy and Tenth Insight and adds to them in what I would call an `adstory', a Murphyism that can be associated with the term adverb. Adstory more appropriately applies to this book than sequel, because while Redfield takes the same adventurer approach he continues to add to his moral message. In Celestine and the Tenth Insight he describes how we come to a worldview understanding of a new spiritual awareness. In Shambhala he elaborates on what you do when you realize that you have it THE SECRET, the title of another intriguing book, and are part of it.

This adventure takes the reader trekking through the Tibetan Himalayas to a place called Shambhala. To give the book a sense of adventure and intrigue, trekking may not be the best word. The main character of the book is actually being chased through Tibet by the Chinese military looking to squelch the secret in the war over people's minds. He gets caught and then interacts with his enemy, only to find out that there are no enemies. Upon arrival, the reader comes to learn that Shambhala is a mythical place that only has a geographical location because you are trekking there. And that trek has a physical journey and a spiritual journey. Shambala is a place in your mind.

Says Redfield: "On the world view spectrum there are doomsday voices showing us that that our Western lifestyle is not sustainable. These folks are countered by technologists who invent there way to the next unsustainable plateau. Which over the history of man is a very short step to the next break through, giving us the impression that time is speeding up." But then I ask what is time? (see my many reviews on this subject...space and time) This book proposes a sustainable future for mankind. It's somewhat of a paradigm shift for those who have not awakened to the Secret.

So to navigate the poles of this spectrum, Redfield offers sustainable growth along with humane technology growth. It is an evolution of slowly turning pages. This is Redfield thesis in a entertaining venue. What I hear in those words is: A growth in technology that takes a look at the `whole of our social being before it introduces scientific break-thru's to society. I call it science with a conscience. I have been pleading for this for years. Is there a law of attraction that finally has me read this book? Imagine, science not conned by the need to push through for the sake of pure science. Imagine an intuitive move toward the sacred, and optimism based on a spiritual vision of where the world can go. Spiritual intuition is a metaphor that comes out of the book. So what is that? It is the subtle turning of pages in your life that embrace synchronicity; those mysterious coincidences that could pop up in a second that makes a page turn on to a new chapter in your life.

Where the book goes beyond previous Redfield books in this area is the subject of prayer. Not payers that start with "bless me father." Not prayers that start with "Dear God I need..." The rest is found by searching on key word cigarroomofbooks. Please share your views.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks

“The end was near.” —Voices from the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, “By excluding the human factor, aren’t we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn’t the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as ‘the living dead’?”

Eyewitness reports from the first truly global war

“I found ‘Patient Zero’ behind the locked door of an abandoned apartment across town. . . . His wrists and feet were bound with plastic packing twine. Although he’d rubbed off the skin around his bonds, there was no blood. There was also no blood on his other wounds. . . . He was writhing like an animal; a gag muffled his growls. At first the villagers tried to hold me back. They warned me not to touch him, that he was ‘cursed.’ I shrugged them off and reached for my mask and gloves. The boy’s skin was . . . cold and gray . . . I could find neither his heartbeat nor his pulse.” —Dr. Kwang Jingshu, Greater Chongqing, United Federation of China

“‘Shock and Awe’? Perfect name. . . . But what if the enemy can’t be shocked and awed? Not just won’t, but biologically can’t! That’s what happened that day outside New York City, that’s the failure that almost lost us the whole damn war. The fact that we couldn’t shock and awe Zack boomeranged right back in our faces and actually allowed Zack to shock and awe us! They’re not afraid! No matter what we do, no matter how many we kill, they will never, ever be afraid!” —Todd Wainio, former U.S. Army infantryman and veteran of the Battle of Yonkers

“Two hundred million zombies. Who can even visualize that type of number, let alone combat it? . . . For the first time in history, we faced an enemy that was actively waging total war. They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until the very end because, unlike us, every single one of them, every second of every day, was devoted to consuming all life on Earth.” —General Travis D’Ambrosia, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe

From Publishers Weekly
Brooks, the author of the determinedly straight-faced parody The Zombie Survival Guide (2003), returns in all seriousness to the zombie theme for his second outing, a future history in the style of Theodore Judson's Fitzpatrick's War. Brooks tells the story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat with a series of first-person accounts "as told to the author" by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. The tale then follows the outbreak via testimony of smugglers, intelligence officials, military personnel and many others who struggle to defeat the zombie menace. Despite its implausible premise and choppy delivery, the novel is surprisingly hard to put down. The subtle, and not so subtle, jabs at various contemporary politicians and policies are an added bonus. (Sept.)

From Booklist
"The Crisis" nearly wiped out humanity. Brooks (son of Mel Brooks and author of The Zombie Survival Guide, 2003) has taken it upon himself to document the "first hand" experiences and testimonies of those lucky to survive 10 years after the fictitious zombie war. Like a horror fan's version of Studs Terkel's The Good War (1984), the "historical account" format gives Brooks room to explore the zombie plague from numerous different views and characters. In a deadpan voice, Brooks exhaustively details zombie incidents from isolated attacks to full-scale military combat: "what if the enemy can't be shocked and awed? Not just won't, but biologically can't!" With the exception of a weak BAT-21 story in the second act, the "interviews" and personal accounts capture the universal fear of the collapse of society--a living nightmare in which anyone can become a mindless, insatiable predator at a moment's notice. Alas, Brad Pitt's production company has purchased the film rights to the book--while it does have a chronological element, it's more similar to a collection of short stories: it would make for an excellent 24-style TV series or an animated serial. Regardless, horror fans won't be disappointed: like George Romero's Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythos. Carlos Orellana

WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER

“An ‘oral history’ of the global war the evil brain-chewers came within a hair of winning. Zombies are among us—turn on your television if you don’t believe it. But, Brooks reassures us, even today, human fighters are hunting down the leftovers, and we’re winning. [His] iron-jaw narrative is studded with practical advice on what to do when the zombies come, as they surely will. A literate, ironic, strangely tasty treat.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Max Brooks has charted the folly of a disaster response based solely on advanced technologies and brute force in this step-by-step guide to what happened in the Zombie War. He details with extraordinary insight how in the face of institutional missteps and greed, people in unexpected ways achieve unique, creative, and effective strategies to survive and fight back. Brooks’s account of the path to recovery and reconstruction after the war is fascinating, too. World War Z provides us with a starting point, at least, a basic blueprint from which to build a popular understanding of how, when, and why such a disaster came to be, and how small groups and individuals survived.”
—Jeb Weisman, Ph.D.,Director of Strategic Technologies, National Center for Disaster Preparedness

“Possesses more creativity and zip than entire crates of other new fiction titles. Think Mad Max meets The Hot Zone . . . It’s Apocalypse Now, pandemic-style. Creepy but fascinating.”
—USA TODAY

“Prepare to be entranced by this addictively readable oral history of the great war between humans and zombies. . . . Will grab you as tightly as a dead man’s fist. A.”
—Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick

“Probably the most topical and literate scare since Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast. . . . This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.”
—Dallas Morning News

“Brooks [is] America’s most prominent maven on the living dead. . . . Chilling. . . . It is gripping reading and a scathing indictment of weak responses to crises real and over-hyped.”
—Hartford Courant

“A sober, frequently horrifying and even moving account. . . . Brooks has delivered a full-blown horror novel, laced with sharp social and political observations and loads of macabre, gruesome imagery. . . . The real horror of World War Z comes from the all-too-plausible responses of human beings and governments to the menace.”
—Fangoria

“A horror fan’s version of Studs Terkel’s The Good War. . . . Like George Romero’s Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythology.”
—Booklist

“Brooks commits to detail in a way that makes his nightmare world creepily plausible. . . . Far more affecting than anything involving zombies really has any right to be. . . . The book . . . opens in blood and guts, turns the world into an oversized version of hell, then ends with and affirmation of humanity’s ability to survive the worst the world has to offer. It feels like the right book for the right times, and that’s the eeriest detail of all.”
—A.V. Club, The Onion

“The best science fiction has traditionally been steeped in social commentary. World War Z continues that legacy. . . . We haven’t been this excited about a book without pictures since–well, since ever.”
—Metro

“Each story locks together perfectly to create a wonderful, giddy suspense. Brooks also has the political savvy to take advantage of any paranoia a modern reader might feel. . . . The perfect book for all us zombie junkies.”
—Paste

“This infectious and compelling book will have nervous readers watching the streets for zombies. Recommended.”

For the intelligent zombie fan
By Ariadne011
I got this book to prepare for an end-of-the-world class in my Mythology course, despite not being much of a zombie fan, but ended up loving it. This book is nothing at all like the movie, and that's a good thing. As others have commented, it's told as individual stories told years after the events, and the characterization, and the thought about military, medical, and social implications are all compelling. There is some unexpected interweaving of stories as well. The narrators are from different places, professions, perspectives, and lifestyles, and the zombies are more like the zombies we know and sorta love since Night of the Living Dead. Definitely for the intelligent zombie fans, in particular in offering strategic ideas to those who, like my daughter, keep plywood, hammer and nails handy in case it becomes necessary to board up our windows when the zombies come.

A very in depth, well written, and well thought out!!!
By Ken Fisher
This book is completely different for the movie, which is a good thing. In the book, the main character interviews a large number of different people to get all angles of what happened during the zombie apocalypse. These interviews cover things that happened before the zombie outbreak, how it started, the beginning of the zombie outbreak, the war that follows, civilian life during the zombie outbreak, soldier life during the battles, and the aftermath of the zombie outbreak. This is a great book and would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about zombies!!

Very Cool
By Julie Merilatt
This was a gift for my husband, but I ended up bogarting it before he even finished. Even though it’s not a genre I would typically read I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was extremely creative and Brooks did an excellent job conveying all of the different characters who told their individual stories about the zombie wars. The progression was great, from the first sign of outbreak to the cleanup efforts. I only wish some of the implications made weren’t so ambiguous, but so much of what was unspoken about the global calamity can be left to the reader’s imagination.

I think the following quote best sums the whole thing up: “All human armies need supplies, this army didn’t. No food, no ammo, no fuel, not even water to drink or air to breathe! There were no logistics lines to sever, no depots to destroy… It’s ironic that the only way to kill a zombie is to destroy its brain because, as a group, they have no collective brain to speak of. There was no leadership, no chain of command, no communication or cooperation on any level. There was no president to assassinate, no HQ bunker to surgically strike. Each zombie is its own, self-contained, automated unit, and this last advantage is what truly encapsulates the entire conflict… They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until the very end…”
