She uses the text of this book as a diary for her personal struggle to merge her off-off-Broadway avant-garde sensibility with Disney's unabashedly bigtime commercial one. Her chronicle lends context to the already lush and abundant illustrations, photographs, and sketches of Taymor and her collaborators at work.
About the Author
Julie Taymor is a director of theater, opera, and film. Taymor was the first woman to receive a Tony Award for best director when she won for The Lion King in 1998. Taymor has received many accolades from critics, and she has earned two Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Award, an Emmy Award, and an Academy Award nomination for Original Song. She also received the 2012 Director Award for Vision and Courage from Barnard College, Her other notable projects include the films Frida, The Tempest Across the Universe, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. In addition to The Lion King, her theater projects include The Green Bird, The Magic Flute, Taming of the Shrew and Juan Darien.

Prepare to Be Amazed

I had seen TV clips advertising the Broadway version of The Lion King for several years and was intrigued, but I didn't get to see a live production until 2014. I was fascinated by the opening ten minutes and never suspected there was anything like the puppets used -- fifteen-foot-tall giraffes, leaping gazelles, amazingly lifelike prowling cheetahs, a lumbering elephant -- not to mention the lion masks (one is featured on the cover). The next morning I came to Amazon looking for more information in the "How did they DO that?" category and found this mesmerizing book. Unlike anything else I've ever seen, and much more amazing than the Rock-Em-Sock-Em computer-generated special effects that dominate movies, the play left me in awe of the creative imagination behind it; and this book gives you an in-depth glimpse of how the magic came to be. WOW!

The book is wonderful and the seller is top notch

The book is wonderful and the seller is top notch! We are attending the musical in the spring and I wanted my daughters to understand not only the art involved in the production but also the inspiration and engineering behind all of the exquisite details they will be seeing. So great for them to see the evolution of ideas as they progress from sketches to actual costumes and set designs. I'm sure it will increase their appreciation for this magical theater experience.
Book arrived early and was exactly as described.

I'm 11 years young. I LOVED this book. the lion king has my favorite soundtrack, my role model and my favorite musical. This book explained how the whole broadway theatre production came together.
