EXCELLENT book, GREAT information, FUN tips. The only thing it lacks is pictures!

This is an EXCELLENT book: thorough, detailed, and accurate. You'll find information most books don't provide, including wise warnings (do NOT buy an exercise wheel for a guinea pig), and good tips for training your guinea pig, which makes life with a guinea pig much more fun! The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has no pictures. Pictures are less important than excellent information, but still, we (buyers of pet books) love to look at them. :-)

Great read with a lot of information!

It has been probably 15 years since I last owned guinea pigs and so I wanted a book to read as a refresher for me but also lots of good information for my 8 year old son who is just now learning about them. My 4 year old daughter might be interested in some of the information too however there are no pictures like most of the other reviewers state so I went ahead and ordered another book more geared towards her. This book was a great read and though there were a few repetitive parts, it was overall lots of useful information. We will be getting our 2 new guinea pig babies in just over a week when they are ready to leave mom and I am so excited to be able to teach them tricks. I did not even know you could teach them tricks!

I was considering having guinea pigs this book I found very resourceful, and was able to learn all of the basic care needed as a beginner to having guinea pigs, after reading it I was ready to find the right pair of guinea pigs, it was very helpful in knowing what was needed to get you started, also included tricks on training your guinea pigs.

GTO originality guide

I have been restoring Pontiacs for many years now and I specialize in the 1970 to 1972 models. I have numerous books on Pontiacs including many original dealer materials. I thought I pretty much knew all there was to know about the 70-72 models but after purchasing this book, I was astounded at the minute details and information provided in this book that I had never seen before. The pictures are of extremely good quality and detail and are printed on good heavy pages. I must say that it is imperative that one must have numerous books and reference material to perform a correct restoration and I must admit that even with the dozens of books I already have, that this book is not just a welcome addition to my library but it is likely THE most detailed and accurate book that I have on this subject.

I love this book and reference it often. Thomas DeMauro is one of the most well-respected Pontiac photo journalists in the nation. DeMauro, Rocky Rotella, Don Keefe, and the late Paul Zazarine belong on the Pontiac Mount Rushmore!

Overall OK, but a lot of typos, and repetition

I personally disagree with the use of "Hacks" in the title - as less than 10% of the hacks in the book are truly hacks. In anycase, it's a decent book to learn about the technicalities of web "measurement" - but I found it really repeated itself a lot. Granted a lot of the KPIs are different for different types of sites - it could of been arranged better. It felt like I read the same thing 10 times, with only minor differences. (Could of been shown in a table maybe).

The perl code could of been put all together under a section called "create your own analytics program" instead of breaking it up into parts.

The index was incomplete - many abbreviations were not there. Towards the end of the book, the hack cross-references disappeared and abbreviations and other terms just popped up without explanation. This is where the incomplete index caused the most annoyance.

There were a LOT of typos - every 20 pages, there was a typo. Frustrating.

An appendix summarizing all the KPIs, terms, abbreviations, etc would of been of great use... as the index is incomplete, and there is no true table of contents - finding things with respect to "hack number" is tiresome.

But at such a cheap price - worth the money.

Has something for everyone

In addition to being well organized and well written, this book does an outstanding job of breaking a complex subject down into understandable pieces. Whether you are new to web analytics or have been using a web analytics tool for years, you will learn something from this book.

I highly recommend this book.

Although Lewis reads the book's introduction, narration duties are assumed by Jesse Boggs, a veteran narrator of business titles (including Lewis's own 2008 book Panic!). Boggs's rich baritone is well suited to the task and trips lightly through a maze of financial jargon (CDOs, derivatives, mid-prime lending) and a dizzying cast of characters. Lewis returns on the final disc for a 10-minute interview about the crisis's aftermath, including a savvy assessment of the wisdom of the financial bailout and where-are-they-now updates on the book's various heroes and villains. Michael Lewis has written from the perspective of a financial insider for more than 20 years. His first book, Liar's Poker, was a warts-and-all account of Wall Street culture in the 1980s, when Lewis worked at the investment bank Salomon Brothers. Everything Lewis has touched since has turned to gold, and The Big Short seems to be another of those books, combining an incendiary, timely topic with the author's solid, insightful, and witty investigative reporting. Only the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette criticized what it felt was a rush job of writing and a failure to integrate the individual stories. Few readers will care for the message here (despite laugh-out-loud moments of absurdity), but Lewis is a capable guide into the world of CDOs, subprime mortgages, head-in-the-sand investments, inflated egos--and the big short. However, as Entertainment Weekly points at, if you're only going to read one book on the topic, perhaps this should not be the one.

Fascinating, but hard reading if you're not *very* knowledgeable in the area of finance

The subprime mortgage crisis, the housing bubble, the bank bailouts: it was about eight years ago that I first heard these terms. I was living unhappily in a group home for people with disabilities, and I didn't follow the news all that closely, but I noticed that prices were going up without anything like a corresponding increase in my monthly SSI check. Even family members with secure, professional employment seemed to be struggling. And this was all happening, someone explained, because the banks had made a bunch of loans to people who couldn't pay them back, and now everything was going to pot all at once.

In "The Big Short," Michael Lewis tells the story of the subprime mortgage crisis in a way that couldn't be more removed from my own perspective, or that of anyone I knew: the story of the money managers, traders, and analysts who figured out the weaknesses in the subprime bond market and placed their bets that the bubble would burst in a *big* way, and *soon*. They were right, of course, but even they didn't realize just how deeply corrupt the system was, or how devastating the fallout would be when the crash came.

Although I follow the news more closely now than I did in my twenties, I've still never taken much interest in the world of high finance, and I probably never would have picked up "The Big Short" if my husband hadn't been intrigued by the trailers for the movie released late last year. When I learned that one of the men profiled in Lewis's book had Asperger's syndrome, like me, I was definitely in.

Lewis explains in detail how the subprime mortgage crisis happened, but his interest is less in analyzing the event as a whole than in profiling the eccentric, self-confident, cautious men who dared to swim against the current of the most respected financial entities - and found themselves vindicated. My favorite parts of the book were, by far, the small-picture slices: personal histories, colorful anecdotes, delicious little ironies. As often happens when I stumble upon the human element of something I've never taken any interest in before, I found myself suspecting that perhaps high finance wasn't an inherently tedious subject after all.

Unfortunately, Lewis starts in assuming his reader has a pretty good understanding of the world of high finance already. As assumptions go, that's really not such a bad one; anyone who picks up a book like this probably already knows a stock from a bond, a hedge fund from a mutual fund. A chapter on "Finance 101" would certainly be annoying, if not actually insulting, to the book's target audience. However, this isn't a technical book for market insiders, either. Lewis knows he's not exactly writing a fluffy beach read; he even jokes, about a quarter of the way through the book, that the reader who has managed to follow the narrative that far deserves a gold star. I believe a glossary would have been a useful addition: readers unfamiliar with some of the terms specific to the subprime mortgage bond market explained in the book could refer to the glossary to clarify anything they'd forgotten without having to flip through earlier chapters, while definitions of more basic terms would make the book more accessible to a wider audience. (Perhaps the most prominent example of the kind of thing that could have used a better explanation is found in the title itself. An unofficial poll among friends of mine, all more or less educated, productive adult members of society, turned up only a couple who knew what "short selling" was. For the record, "short selling" is essentially a way of betting against the market by borrowing an asset and then selling it, on the basis of the belief that the price will have dropped when it comes time to return what was borrowed. Lewis never explains this.)

I wouldn't say "The Big Short" is entirely inaccessible to the general reader, especially one with easy access to the Internet. (Fortunately, I had my smartphone close at hand while I was reading.) Even when I didn't understand the specific details of what I was reading, I was almost always able to get the gist of what was going on, and Lewis is very good about succinctly summing up the effects of complex sequences of events. I did enjoy reading this, and came away from it vowing to be more confident in my own carefully reasoned conclusions even when they go against the grain. I haven't seen the movie yet, but if it stays true to the basic events of the book while presuming a little less knowledge of high finance on the part of its audience, this may well be one of those rare cases in which the majority of readers are better served by seeing the movie instead, or at least seeing the movie first.

Decent movie but great book. Please read this book.

The movie was really good and entertaining but if you actually have an interest in what happened and how it all fell apart, you really need to read to read this book. It does not point fingers at one person, actually it points fingers at all of them...all parties, all players, all sides. This is an amazingly easy to understand book of completely unrelatable and complex esoteric financial concepts and products. If for no other reason than to actually have an idea of what happened and not just trust the news or a talking head on TV, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In fact, I purchased the Kindle version because I gave my hard back version away...twice. It really is something you will want others to read once you read it.

Greed is not so good.

Clever and intriguing with a real from the street feeling as the writer, Michael Lewis tells the story from the viewpoints of several critical, but lesser known “main players” who saw and actively partook in the Wall Street madness. Lewis spent several years on wall Street- straight outta college and he understands the games played, his earlier book “Liar’s poker” dug into this –covering the 1980’ “Greed is Good” fever. ( I will be reading that book sometime in the future). What I took away from this book is that the reason the Bush and Obama administrations did not punish these big firms and their CEOs more is that (besides the corporate money influence standing in the way), the Wall Street bond “rabbit hole” is so deep that if you pull hard enough on one firm- they would collapse and as their bonds collapse- it would pull down one firm after another as they have all bet against each other’s bonds so heavily, resulting in a colossal financial collapse. What is perplexing is why Washington gave so much of the tax payer’s money to Goldman Sachs and to Citigroup.
One warning I will share is that the language is this book goes beyond “Salty”. It was if the film “Serpico” was filmed in a bank’s conference room. The reader may be offended.

Ophthalmology review

I purchased this book looking for something a little more comprehensive than the Massachussets Manual or in fact any of the other small manuals, which are somewhat boring for the general practitioner since they consist mostly of lists. After reading through a few chapters, specifically vascular retinopathies, I've found this book to be very effective in explaining the pathophysiology of diseases, thus helping to better understand the clinical presentation and treatment strategies, something that the smaller manuals lack. The book comes along with great pictures, though the Kanksi pictures are a tad bit more varied and representative in my opinion, but compared to the Kanski I prefer the comprehensive explanations and evidence-based medicine presented in the Yanoff. All in all I think this book greatly complements the Kanski and is a great way for medical students/residents/specialists to understand in some depth the different diseases of the eye.

Good choice, but some flaws

I'm a second-year resident in ophthalmology. I wanted to get this book since it's been around for some 10 years now and it has good references. And the truth is, it is a nice one, full of clinical images and tables, streamlined format, color-coded for convenience, up-to-date with some of the newest therapies and backed up on the newest research, well explained surgical procedures, easy to read to the point that it covers only the most relevant information, and great for the busy life and often limited study time of the resident; I definetily use it as a starting point for reviewing any given topic, but please note, ONLY as a starting point, since it is not as thorough as one might need, and this is especially true for oculoplastics. The bottom line is that I recommend this book for fast and accurate gathering of general information, previos to a more detailed review on more robust texts, or to efficiently reinforce essentials on previuosly acquired knowledge. Hope this helps.

Suzi Barrett is an actor/writer living in Los Angeles. She performs and teaches at the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre, and plays Kirby's mom on the Disney XD show "Kirby Buckets". Other TV credits include Drunk History, @Midnight, How I Met Your Mother, and a few million commercials for everything from Progressive (car insurance) to Esurance (also car insurance). Writing credits include "Wipeout", "America's Next Weatherman", and many secret love letters to her dog. She's currently developing a pilot based on her popular web series "I Hate California", and can be seen in the upcoming Christopher Guest movie "Mascots". She also apparently LOVES quotation marks.

Fun to read!

These are so fun to read and inspiring at the same time! My daughter, who is 11, looks forward to reading a new card every morning before school. A few of them do have cuss words but nothing offensive (in my book anyway). I think they build her confidence level in a positive way and I'm really glad I purchased them.

Fun, sincere affirmation cards set

These are a slightly snarky yet still sincere version of affirmation cards. Fun drawings accompany the humorous writing. Good for older teens, young adults, and adults. (Cartoon drawings shouldn't be confused with these being for children.) Make a good gift for someone else or yourself.

love these cards!

I love the design of all the cards that came in the deck! they really do help cheer me up when im having a challenging day. Im thinking of using these cards with clients in my current placement. I think that they will enjoy reading them and looking and the great art on the cards. Plus they are not the typical affirmation cards some of them are really quirky and I love that about this set. Nothing is the "normal" type of affirmations, that is what makes these so much better then other types!

Classic Pollan

I think I've read every one of Pollan's books. I loved some, especially Omnivore's Dilemma, while others were just good (In Defense of Food). With Cooked, there were parts I loved, while other parts I was ready to skim over. In the end, I enjoyed the book immensely, but not as much as some of this others.

Like many of his other books, Pollan divides Cooked into thematic sections (Here: Fire [Grilling], Water [Cooking in water], Air [baking], and Earth[fermenting/pickling]) but they seemed a little forced, as Pollan himself seems to acknowledge. You need fire for three of the four, and yeast plays a pretty big role in both beer and bread. I get what he was trying to do, but it felt like it didn't quite work to enhance the themes of the book rather than merely provide breaking points.

His introduction sets the stage for the entire book. He identifies a dilemma in modern culture: we spend less time cooking than ever but more time watching and idolizing others who cook. Pollan explains that contemplating this dilemma triggered something in him to write this book, and I think he makes an important overarching observation: although cooking may not be the most efficient use of time, it is an alchemic process that transforms both raw foods and people. Without cooking, humans would not be what we are today. The modern trend to remove cooking from everyday life, therefore, is likely to have huge consequences on who we are. As Pollan notes, our fascination with cooking reflects the deep-seated position it holds in our lives.

The book contains long sections with meditations on what cooking is and what it means to culture, both ancient and modern, and for the most part I enjoyed them. For example, although it is somewhat tangential to cooking, Pollan discusses the role that microbiotics play in our gut and the effect on our health. Tying this topic into modern cooking, he raises some very interesting questions about the effect of a "no-microbe" policy on our health. As Pollan excels at pointing out repeatedly, the food we eat today is at the long end of the combined evolution of man and food: we eat what we eat and cook food the way we do because it is necessary to our survival. Removing certain types of food (e.g., whole grain bread, fermented vegetables) without thinking of the consequences is fraught with peril.

The meditations are interspersed with stories about masters of cooking and Pollan's own personal experiences. In each section, Pollan seeks out the masters in each particular field to teach him about cooking. As with his other books, Pollan always finds the philosophers within a certain field that combine their expertise with an ability to discuss their field in a way that opens your eyes. Who knew that bread baking would be so complex and more of an art form than simple mixing? Pollan is a masterful storyteller, combining an ability to explain complex issues with a sharp sense of humor and self-deprecation.

With Omnivore's Dilemma, Pollan changed how I think about the world. For me, Cooked was different in that rather than changing how I see the world of food, he reinforced ideas I already have and gave voice to some subconscious thoughts I had about the importance of cooking my own food. Although I have always enjoyed cooking, Pollan helps highlight WHY cooking is so enjoyable and so worthwhile. I especially enjoyed his section on brewing beer and have been inspired to try to brew my own batch. As he notes in his afterword, many of these endeavors seem at first glance to be an incredible waste of time and totally inefficient. As Pollan explains, however, there is a "satisfaction that comes from temporarily breaking free of one's accustomed role as the producer of one thing -- whatever it is we sell into the market for a living -- and the passive consumer of everything else." Over the course of the book, Pollan successfully proves that cooking is special and shouldn't be given up so easily, and there are benefits to slowing down and becoming immersed in something so basic as the food we eat. So while I can't claim that Cooked is as eye-opening as some of Pollan's other works, I enjoyed it immensely.

If done correctly and patiently, using the right ingredients and techniques, you don’t just whip up great dishes, but create memories that will linger on in the mind of those who are lucky enough to eat it.

In Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation by Michael Pollan, published in 2013, the author explores the impact of four of the most powerful elements of nature – air, water, fire and earth – on the food that we eat. From baking to fermenting, he experiments with some of the best chefs in the world to discover how beautifully these four elements shape and cook the food that we so love to eat.

The entire world pauses to read a culinary book that is written by the renowned journalist, Michael Pollan. It is no wonder that after penning down several critically acclaimed non-fiction books based on food and culinary science such as In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, his next piece of work, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, has taken the world by storm. It is difficult to find an author as passionate about food and the role it plays in the evolution of mankind as Pollan. So the book certainly deserves your attention if you love food.

Readers have loved how the food systematically breaks down into the four sections of fire, air, earth and water giving ample explanation of how each of them shape and cook the food separately in their own unique way. The book also makes a point to remind its readers how the modern man is losing his touch with the real methods of cooking. Relying on processed food to take care of our nutritional requirements weakens us and the entire cycle of ecological inter dependence. In fact, the author claims that by adopting a healthier cooking practice, we can fight health issues successfully and go back to restoring our disturbed relationship with nature.

In 2016 Pollan and Alex Gibney turned the book into a 4-part documentary series released exclusively on NetFlix which brought stunning visuals to Pollan’s story.

Yes, Yes, Yes—Reading Cooked Is Worth Your Time and Money

I have been a fan of Michael Pollan's ever since I read Botany of Desire. At the time, I thought he'd never top that book but as his curiosity and passion about food, our food delivery systems, and the fundamental importance of what we eat has increased, he has just gotten better and better.

If you are already a Michael Pollan fan, you appreciate his meticulous attention to detail in his research and his lucid prose. I swear, this guy could take the most complicated subject on the planet and make it accessible to his readers. In Cooked, I think he has reached a new peak in his powers of synthesis and observation.

Cooked is divided into four parts, analogous to the four elements described by the ancient Greeks: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Of these, it was the section on Earth (fermentation) that really made me sit up and take notice. He brings up so many important points about how our Western diet fails us every day, making our lifespans shorter and our health more precarious.

In its way, Cooked is as important a book about health and nutrition as Diet for a Small Planet was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This book will make you think, give you tools to improve your health, and explain how cooking a meal from scratch in your own kitchen becomes an act of rebellion.

So worth your time and the purchase price.
