Outstanding
By John Collins
I must first of all state that I am not an expert on history. However, I know what I like when I see it, and this is a wonderful book. I should also admit to having a personal interest in this story, as my family claims Conrad Weiser as an ancestor, as well as Iroquois and Delaware descent.
The author is a great writer first and foremost. He has a subtly humorous and cynical style of writing with intelligent interpretations, backed up by plenty of direct quotes and facts. His writing reveals both a sympathy with the native Americans and for the colonists.
What I got out of this book is an appreciation for the social and political sophistication of the Iroquois, the complex relationship between the native Americans and the colonists, and the decency, daring, and desperation of many of the people involved.
It is a pity that the mutual respect which existed between the early colonists and Native Americans unraveled into a one-sided exploitation of the natives by the immigrants. In a large part, it was likely due to the overwhelming numbers of European migrants (and their children), that made the native people seem inconsequential. The inevitable result was that most of the later newcomers to America and their children had little understanding and sympathy for the natives. Respect turned into contempt.
Good history comes with rich detail which allows a wide variety of conclusions to be drawn. One such conclusion is a warning to us now, as we consider the issue of immigration to America today. The native Americans with all their sophistication of culture, were completely overwhelmed, marginalized, and exploited by immigrants. Their once beautiful land has been scarred and blighted by what we call development. What is to prevent the same thing happening to us and our land, by the new waves of immigrants, legal and otherwise ?
We shouldn't just treat history as a form of intellectual entertainment. Our duty is to use the understanding we gain about human behavior, for the betterment of the lives of our own children.
