A terrific, trustworthy, one-stop guide to all types of writing.

I have taught writing for many years and can truly say that this book stands alone as a one-stop resource for the wide array of contemporary writing situations. Insecure or inexperienced writers will find a clear, comprehensive, approachable guide that can immediately boost their proficiency and confidence. More experienced writers will appreciate side bars like the concise “dos and don’ts.” When we're under deadline pressure, such handy lists of correctives can save time and relieve stress. I was also impressed with Brown’s thorough, well-researched guide to digital writing. She captures the nuances of navigating social media. A handsome book as well, this makes a great gift. I bought it for a recent college grad just entering the workplace.

A must have reference book!

Communication is always going to be important no matter how technically advanced our society gets or what new products are invented. Writing is fundamental to so many aspects of life and Laura Brown's new book is a comprehensive guide to how to write effectively. Don't assume that your child has learned this skill in high school or even college. In law school, I was the TA for a first year legal writing class. I was amazed at the poor writing skills demonstrated so many students who had graduated from top tier colleges. This book makes a wonderful graduation gift and should have its place next to the dictionary and thesaurus in every home.

This is the only book that I know of that gives specific guidance for how to write everything from a business letter to a love letter, from a college application essay to a press release. What's so great about the book is that although it is comprehensive in scope, it is accessible in tone and layout. The book is easy to read and very well organized. I highly recommend it!

I bought copies of this for all my younger relatives, who often need assistance writing, well, anything. A detailed survey, Brown's book takes the anxiety out of a wide variety of tasks, from writing thank-you notes to constructing college essays and blog posts. One great chapter.......

Scott, an undistinguished painter, a recovering alcoholic, and a general sad sack, runs into a woman he knows casually while at the farmer's market on Martha's Vineyard. He's there for the summer to paint, she's there with her family to enjoy life as one of the mega-rich. They chat, she mentions that they'll be returning to New York that evening. Scott intends to return to the city the next morning and is offered a free ride back on their private jet. He accepts. And then the unthinkable happens. The plane crashes into the ocean just minutes after departure killing all on board except Scott and the four year old son of the woman and her renowned husband.

The chapter that follows this terrible crash is one of the most exciting and well written I've read. Scott's disorientation is palpable as he comes to consciousness. The sea is dark, the sky is foggy, no stars can be seen to guide him. And then the whimpering cries of the boy reach his ears. I'm not giving anything away to say that they survived. But why should the plane have crashed? Many authorities believe it to be sabotage. One of the other passengers was about to be indicted for some big financial crime. Speculation runs wild amount the investigation agencies and the press.

We get short chapters defining the personal histories of all the passengers and crew on board. Okay, fine. This device isn't new and usually serves to let the reader have some investment in the outcome. As I stated, the "escape" from the sea was a thrilling bit of writing. The supporting players bios began to get a little tedious as the info was parceled out sparingly. I was losing interest in the outcome at about 70% but stuck with it anyway.

And then, what happened? Suddenly we're at the end and rather than giving the reader a unique and original ending, the author wrapped up the mystery with something ripped right from the headlines. I felt cheated, duped, in fact. So you may want to wait for the price to drop before committing to purchase this book. I will say that the writing is fine but it seems to me that the author merely tacked on an easy ending that took no thought at all.

Does Before the Fall Fall?

I so wanted to write a rave review of this book.

The book tells the story of an ill-fated flight, a small private plane taking off from a fogged Martha's Vineyard to New York City. No spoilers here (it's written on the back cover): the flight doesn't make it. What happened to the flight is the driving force of the story. The author ingeniously vacillates between the present, where painter Scott Burroughs manages to break free from the wreck and saves a four year old boot JJ, and the past, in which we learn about the lives of the passenger, hopefully unlocking the mystery to the crash.

The chapters are well plotted, and read quickly, drawing you in immediately. The author crafts an authentic world, a television network modeled on Fox News with a heinous personality to boot, and rich, real lives of the people on the plane, and their survivors. So why the three stars?

At 60% of the book, I would have written a rave review. And then I got to the ending. No spoilers here, but I didn't like it. and felt like the book came to an abrupt halt, ultimately leaving me disappointed.

This is a book with much potential. I imagine it will serve as a great beach read (not so much an airplane read). The author shows much promise, just focus on tuning up those endings.

I am a big fan of the author's "Fargo" TV series, so I was sold on this book before reading a Patrick Anderson review in the Washington Post. A quick glance at the Amazon page for the book will reveal that early on there is a crash of a private jet with eleven on board and most are killed. The plane was heading from Martha's Vineyard to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey near Manhattan and 'falls' into the sea. Now the investigation begins to determine what happened and who is responsible. Hawley's story telling skills are excellent and in this book he interweaves investigation chapters with chapters on each of the people on board. Hard to put down.

As the end approaches, two climaxes, each on a separate track, are building. It has a satisfying ending and lots of interesting characters and I hope to see another from Hawley soon. However, "Before the Fall" is not without its flaws. I really doubt that anyone could have survived the crash. Secondly, the responsible party's actions are just too much of a stretch for me. And finally, a 26 year old, attractive billionaires, naked, slips into bed with a middle aged guy who hasn't had sex in five years, and you're never going to believe what happens next, perhaps the most incredible scene of all. So put it all together and it spells four star, but a good fun read.

A MUST READ for anyone looking forward to experiencing a full and meaningful life!

I am so glad for the publication of this book. Quarter-Life Calling is a great read and resource not just for those in their twenties but for people of all ages. Obviously, the younger the person is, the greater the benefit they are going to reap.
Paul provides great insight and wisdom into how one can find that sweet spot of living life full of meaning and with purpose. It is tragic to see so many people in all walks and stages of life wasting away their precious years in uncertainty and purposelessness. The life that God created for joy and enjoyment is often sapped by misguided and wrongly prioritized pursuits. I've been in pastoral ministry for 18 years now. I've counseled countless number of teens, college students, singles, young professionals, and even married couples struggling to understand God's calling over their life. I wished this book had been available many years earlier. I would definitely have placed them into the hands of many as a practical guide to understanding God and discerning His call over their lives. With personal illustrations and a wide-range of insights gleaned from respectable sources, Paul brings clarity to the understanding and definition of what calling is all about. This book is a rich resource and a practical guide for discerning and living in the sweet spot of your life.

but I am also amazed by the timing of it

Wow, what can I say? Not only am I absolutely blown away by the book, but I am also amazed by the timing of it. The book has practical tips and tools to steer millennials towards the right direction in seeking their true calling from our creator.

I was once a tax accountant working in the high net worth sectors. A few years ago, I hit what was described by Paul the “Quarter Life Crisis”. I am anxious about many things – when would I get the next promotion, how much would I make for the next few decades, when I can afford to buy a house (I live in Vancouver, Canada, where real estate prices are through the roof).

Additionally, there are so many choices of career I can venture into, my mind is too busy figuring out which is my true calling and hence it took me a long time to finally decide on developing my own marketing agency, which is aligned with my passion, personality, gift and life experience, as highlighted in the book. The Venn Diagram presented by Paul is very intriguing – the sweet spot is the intersection of those four elements. At the end of every chapter, there are many reflection questions that would assist you in inching closer and closer to the answer of the big question “What is my true calling?”.

The book is an interesting amalgamation of biblical teaching and Paul’s practical experience in Human Resources + coaching. I recommend this book to any Christians seeking to understand their life calling better, not just millennials.

Paul Sohn not only speaks to the felt need of his generation to do something of significance, he actually helps them figure out how to do it. But his book isn't just for the Millennial. People of any age who desire to know and follow their calling and God-given design will devour the principles and help he offers. He speaks from his Christian convictions, understanding both in his own life and in others' that God has made us for a keen purpose and we will be deeply satisfied when we pursue it! Read it, give it as a gift to your kids, offer it to people you mentor. Great book!

About the Author
Susan Stempleski is the World Link series editor, teacher trainer, and noted author of several texts on teaching with film and video. She currently teaches at the Hunter College Intensive English Language Institute of the City University of New York and Columbia University Teacher's College, New York City.

James R. Morgan received his MA degree in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College. He worked as a teacher training fellow in northern Japan and then served as coordinator of the Mombusho English Fellows (MEF) Program for two years. In addition, he taught English at the JAL-BBC Institute and edited in-house materials for Simul Academy in Tokyo. Subsequently, he worked as Senior Development Editor for Cambridge University Press in New York City. Since 1998, he has been a freelance author and editor on a variety of print and video projects for major ELT publishers. He is a co-author of the World Link and World Pass series for National Geographic Learning.

Nancy Douglas has been in the English language teaching field since 1991. She has worked as an instructor and materials developer in Korea and the United States. She has co-authored several series for National Geographic Learning, including World Link and Reading Explorer, and has edited print and Web-based materials for students as well as professional development courses for teachers.

Paul Hawken, the entrepreneur behind the Smith & Hawken gardening supplies empire, is no ordinary capitalist. Drawing as much on Baba Ram Dass and Vaclav Havel as he does on Peter Drucker and WalMart for his case studies, Hawken is on a one-man crusade to reform our economic system by demanding that First World businesses reduce their consumption of energy and resources by 80 percent in the next 50 years. As if that weren't enough, Hawken argues that business goals should be redefined to embrace such fuzzy categories as whether the work is aesthetically pleasing and the employees are having fun; this applies to corporate giants and mom-and-pop operations alike. He proposes a culture of business in which the real world, the natural world, is allowed to flourish as well, and in which the planet's needs are addressed. Wall Street may not be ready for Hawken's provocative brand of environmental awareness, but this fine book is full of captivating ideas.

Avoiding stormy rhetoric, Hawken thoughtfully reviews ecological theories and disasters and insists that "ecology offers a way to examine all present economic and resource activities from a biological rather than a monetary point of view." This important book envisions how the United States can construct "an economics of common good." Rather than worrying about saving the environment, we must worry about how we can encourage businesses to "re-imagine" and "re-invent" themselves as cyclical operations , "cradle to cradle." Hawken advises three broad approaches: observe the waste-equals-food (raw products) principle of nature; change from a carbon to a hydrogen/sunshine-based economy; and create systems that support restorative behavior. Businesses, nations, transnational corporations--all should recognize that the freedom to operate can only be experienced "within the discipline of social responsibility." Every product or by-product can be imagined in its subsequent forms, even before it is made. Restorative businesss can, in turn, teach consumers who don't truly consume. "Value is what we ascribe," asserts Hawken, and that is "by far the most adventurous path to take." Highly recommended.

College required text

Used at Western Washington University in 2011. This book approaches the subjects of business, sustainability, the environment and our role in how those elements intertwine. It's the type of book you could read multiple times and gain new knowledge from each time. It's definitely thought-provoking and a great foundation for conversation about how we move forward as a business-minded society. I really appreciate that it doesn't just take one side of the issue - many environmental texts seem to bash business with no exceptions - but Hawken notes that business can help the environment as much as hurt it, and proposes that we find ways to improve business rather than eliminating it. A great read for anyone.

Global Required Reading

I don't even know how to begin describing how great this book is. It should be required reading for EVERYBODY on the planet. I learned about this book while watching the documentary, "The Corporation," and I'll have to admit, I wasn't expecting anything revolutionary in this book. I thought I'd be getting some interesting pictures and statistics relating to consumption, recycling, landfills, global warming...pretty much your standard environmental rhetoric (of which I'm a subscriber) to complement what I already know. What I got, however, was so much more. This book is not only about the environment, but about how the environment integrates with global business and economics. For some reason, the 'developed' world has created a disconnect between the environment and business. Hawken shows how the two are inextricably connected, and in order to guarantee a successful future for us, our children and all life on earth, business and the environment must work harmoniously and each stop being the bane of the other.

His metaphor for business IS the environment: everything in nature is cyclical, which brings maximum efficiency. Nothing is more efficient than the natural world: one organism's waste is another organism's life source. If business would approach operations and resources from this perspective, waste would not be 'waste' and the benefits of increased efficiency would permeate throughout all life and systems. His metaphor is very simple but exceedingly beautiful, and only becomes more so as Hawken goes in-depth with concrete examples and further exploration of all issues from both sides. Throughout reading this book, I was continuously floored by his analysis, his insight and his prescription for the future.

And a note about his prose: every sentence reflects structurally the economies and efficiencies it conveys ideologically. This man is concise and his style is powerful - every word packs a punch. He says so much with so little, maximizing the time spent in our reading investment. Clearly, I have nothing but the highest praise for Hawken and this book - it is truly visionary.

Foundation Reference for Future of Business Without Waste

This is easily one of the top ten books on the pragmatic reality of what Herman Daly calls "ecological economics" (see my list of Environmental Security).

The author excels at painting a holistic view of the realities that are not being addressed by the media or by scholars in anything other than piecemeal fashion.

The bottom line: what we are doing now in the face of accelerating decay (changes and losses that used to take 10,000 years now take three years) is the equivalent of "trying to bail out the Titanic with teaspoons." On page 21-22 the author states that we are using 10,000 days of energy creation every day, or 27 years of energy each day.

This is a practical book. In brief, we can monetize the costs of the decay, we can show people the *real* cost of each product and in this way inspire both boycotts (of wasteful products) and boycotts (Jim Turner's term) of solar energy and long-lasting repairable products.

The author appears to be both pro-business and very wise in seeing that the cannot save the environment by destroying business, but rather must save business so it can save the environment--we must help business understand that doing more with less is what they must do to survive.

The author includes a recurring theme from the literature, that diversity is an option generator, and hence one of the most precious aspects of life on Earth. Diversity is the ultimate source of wealth, and anything that reduces diversity is impoverishing the planet and mankind. In a magnificent turn of phrase, the author states that the loss of a species is the loss of a biological library.

At its root this book is about missing information, needed information, about the urgency of making all inputs, processes, and outputs from corporate production transparent. He quotes Vaclav Havel on page 54 as saying that this is an information challenge, a challenge of too much (or too little) information and not enough actionable intelligence supporting sustainable sensible outcomes.

This is also a financial problem that has not been monetized properly. Although E. O. Wilson takes a crack at the strategic or gross costs of saving the Earth in his book "The Future of Life," this author looks at the retail level and describes the waste inherent in our military system. He reminds me of Derek Leebaert's "The 50 Year Wound" when he notes that the US and the USSR spent over 10 trillion dollars on the Cold War, enough to completely re-make the entire infrastructure of Earth, including all schools. As I myself like to note, for the half trillion we have spent on the war against Iraq, we could instead have given a free $50 cell phone to each of the 5 billion poor people, and changed the planet forever.

The author is compelling in pointing out that conservation alone would save more energy than drilling in Alaska, and that President Reagan not rolled back gasoline mileage expectations, we would today be free of any dependency of Middle Eastern energy.

A good part of the book focuses on the need to eliminate waste, what some call "cradle to cradle" (waste must be fully absorbed of other pieces of the system), and where waste cannot be eliminated, to include the cost of its storage in the price of the product, requiring producers of products to take them back (e.g. refrigerators).

I am inspired by the author's view that not only is technology NOT a complete solution, but that full employment is possible if we REDUCE our excessive acquisition of technology that not only replaces humans, but also consumes energy and produces pollution.

This is an extraordinarily clever and useful book that fully integrates discussions of feedback loops and especially of financial and legal feedback loops that are now misrepresentative. One example the author uses is the GATT demand that there be no discrimination of "like" products based on methods of production. This is code for blocking labor laws by imposing high tariffs on products made by slaves or under sweatshop conditions.

I completely agree with one of the author's most important opinions, that we must end corporate claims of "personality" and the rights of a person. This has had two pernicious effects, the first allowing corporations to dominate the public debate; and the second of exempting managers from legal liability and transparency.

The book emphasized the restoration of human and natural capital as vital foundations for evaluating investments--this would dramatically reduce the financial criteria's dominance and emphasis on short-term returns that do not reflect the cost of natural resources and lost jobs to the future and the community.

Distressingly but importantly, the author notes that a major component of the cost of goods is in advertising, where corporations spend more on advertising than the government spends on all secondary schools, and on packaging, much of which is designed to last vastly longer than the contents.

I especially liked the author's suggestion that insurance costs be included in the price of homes and of gasoline, essentially making universal insurance affordable for all. I also liked his idea for indexing Nations by their sustainability, i.e. Most Sustainable Nation (MSN).

The author ends with a restatement of his three fundamentals:

1) End waste

2) Shift to renewable power (solar and hydro)

3) Create accountability and feedback

Although this book was published in 1993 and the author has now published "Natural Capital" (next on my reading list), I did not discover it until recently and am now very enthused about the author's newest project, the World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility (WISER). I am certain in my heart that a bottom up Earth Intelligence Network is forming, and that end-user voluntary labor--social networks--are going to place enough information in the hands of individuals to restore participatory democracy and moral communal capitalism. This author is extraordinary in his understanding and his ability to teach adults about reality and the future.

The intentional version is the same as the American version. Even though the book shipped with creases, it can be ignored. If you are looking for a cheaper version, get this one. Just to be aware that the page numbers are different than the American one.

Organizational Behavior

I had to purchase this book for my Organizational Behavior and Management class as part of an MBA program. It has basic concepts that, I believe, anyone who has worked in a professional atmosphere for several years should already be familiar with. I would not recommend purchasing the book. I would rather rent it for the semester or borrow it from the college library if it were available. As far as I have read, I have learned nothing that I did not know before. It covers topics discussed in a high school or college psychology course. I remember the concepts I learned in my high school psychology class, but the book has filled in the blanks where I forgot the terminology for certain behavior types. This book may be more useful for a person interested in human resources. I have no interest in human resources so maybe that is why I am not enthusiastic about recommending this book for your personal library/book collection. If you are interested in psychology, why people behave the way they do and what you can do to correct their behavior or make them bend to your will, then this book may be for you. However, I do hope that there are books published that cover this topic better. I was not satisfied with the coverage of the topic in this book. One other thing, the authors tells the reader several times, and I paraphrase, if you think you know all there is to know about this topic, you are mistaken, pay close attention because this topic is covered at length and you will learn new things. I am not that far into the book, but I became discouraged when I read a scenario about an employee who sued her company because they were using corporal punishment in the workplace to encourage camraderie. The examples in this book, although true, are a bit extereme, for lack of a better explanation. I do not know much about this topic, but maybe the author thought this method was the best way to discuss org behavior.

As with hardcover, no access code in loose leaf version

I bought the loose leaf version because I will be doing some traveling two weeks during the course. With loose leaf, I can take whatever chapters I need during the trip, lightening the travel load. It's nice the price is a little cheaper than the hardcover. Being proactive, I bought this a week in advance of the course. However, I soon realized this didn't come with the self assessment library CD or an access code to the online version. I later read some of the hardcover reviews also complained of no access code included. There should be a warning on both the loose leaf and hardcover descriptions stating no access code is included. Code to be purchased separately. After spending $100+ on the book, adding the cost of the access code (or CD) is quite pricey.....and the prices vary from $25 to $65 (using Google). The warning would help students allocate their budget, and give them a chance to ask the professor/teacher if the assessment is actually needed for class - before purchasing one.

The Lotus and the Lily

I discovered Janet Conner by way of Daily Word magazine. I have been a member of the Al-Anon 12 step program for over 20 years and we are encouraged to journal. What Janet teaches in her first book, Writing Down Your Soul is a little different, well a Lot different than journaling. I have always started my journaling with 'Dear God' but I did not know at the time I was talking to my SOUL and waiting for answers. The Lotus and The Lily takes you even farther and shows you how to have an even deeper connection, a truly abundant life experience. I would recommend this book to anyone who is searching to get to know themselves completely and are not afraid of the answers to the questions they will begin to ask, because you will be answered. GREAT BOOK!

Transformational

Over a thirty day period of practice, Lotus & Lily outlines a process integrating the wisdom of Buddha and Christ that culminates in creating a sacred Mandala to manifest the life of your dreams. This book is Janet Conner's sequel to Writing Down Your Soul that teaches deep soul writing. With powerfully reflective passages on forgiveness and discovering your divine purpose, Lotus & Lily served as the next step in my spiritual evolution. This is a must read for anyone who is committed to spiritual nourishment and transformation of conciousness.

Forget New Years Resolutions! Read The Lotus and The Lily for True Transformation

For three years now I have have read The Lotus & The Lily during December and each time I am moved beyond words about Janet Conner's wisdom. The 30-day soul program is beautiful, transformative and nourishing. I have three intention mandalas each which I love as I would a child. I am grateful for the lessons I learn each year. I will be reading L&L every year of my life as long as I am able... for my soul keeps expanding after all. There is always much to love, forgive and give thanks for.
