From Library Journal
The protective barrier that separates Westland from its neighbors to the east is about to fall, letting loose a monstrous evil upon the world. Only the combined efforts of a young man dedicated to finding the truth, an enigmatic woman intent on concealing her past, and a crusty old hermit resigned to his inevitable destiny can prevent the opening of the three boxes of Orden-an event with the potential to destroy existence itself. The inclusion of graphic scenes of sado-eroticism, though integral to the story, may deter purchase by some libraries. Nevertheless, this first novel offers an intriguing variant on the standard fantasy quest. The richly detailed world and complex characters will appeal to mature fantasy aficionados.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In a classic fantasy world, young Richard Cypher must go on a perilous quest with the Sword of Truth in order to deal with evils that have a contemporary degree of ambiguity about them. On the way, he acquires the normal collection of wizards, dragons, and human companions as well as an equivalent roster of enemies. Both the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind's ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not. Although a fairly self-contained story, the book has something of the flavor of the first volume of a saga; neither Goodkind nor his publisher will receive too many complaints if a sequel is in the works. Hardly an aspirant to Tolkien's mantle, Goodkind certainly seems, at any rate, to be working on being mentioned in the same breath as Robert Jordan. Roland Green

From Kirkus Reviews
The magical boundaries between the three lands of forest guide Richard Cypher's world are crumbling: Strange beasts from the Midlands, where magic still exists, appear in his Westland forest. And so does Kahlan Amnell, a young woman with some interesting powers and four assassins on her trail. She is in search of the great wizard who left the Midlands not long after he set the boundaries. He is the only one who can possibly thwart Darken Rahl, an evil wizard who has set in motion a process that will result in the enslavement of the three lands. When Richard's eccentric friend and mentor, Zedd, is sought out for advice about finding the great wizard, Kahlan identifies Zedd as the object of her search. The process that Darken Rahl has initiated requires him to obtain the three boxes of Orden, and, within one year, to open the proper box. As time grows short, Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and a border guard, Chase, go in quest of the one box that the evil wizard still lacks. Among the truths that Richard learns along the way is the wisdom of the Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid and will believe almost anything. A wonderfully creative, seamless, and stirring epic fantasy debut. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

An interesting blend
By D.L. Mains
This is my first review. Not because I don’t want to voice my opinions, but because most people will discount a review from someone who has never before contributed reviews. Sad, but true.

I have decided to start reviewing, not only to give myself credibility, but to help like-minded people find quality fantasy.

For the record, I am 70% through Wizard’s First Rule. I logged on to Amazon to investigate purchasing the next book because I found myself invested in the characters enough at this point to insure the next book was waiting for me on my Kindle once I reached ‘the end.’

In perusing some of the reviews, I found so many who have voiced some of my own complaints, as well as those who mentioned some of the star qualities of this book.

Complaints: The repetition. Wow, so often I had to swipe forward and then back, because I was reading the same exact thing…sometimes the exact sentence. Most of it involved the angst between Richard and Kahlan. More about all the ‘big’ secrets they were all hiding from each other. Even more about some of the descriptions…some creatures have yellow eyes, yet others have yellow eyes-but not quite the same yellow. Sometimes just beating the reader over the head with how evil Rahl is.

And then we get to read for ourselves how evil Rahl is. Lovely.

I also found some of the fight scenes very difficult to follow…as if the choreography was off.

The crying: Is this some effort of the author to show the reader the characters have empathy? The first couple of times it works, after that it’s like a cacophony of dampness.

Inconsistencies: The mud people tipped their blades in poison. Yet the knife that cut Kahlan didn’t kill her. The Westland army attacked Midland and Richard insisted it couldn’t be them, even though he becomes worried that maybe it IS them. Er, did the Boundary fall? No one mentions that it does, but they don’t mention that there is no way an army can attack through the Boundary.

Qualities: Richard’s cleverness. To me, Goodkind developed Richard’s logical thinking from the start, so his continued thought process has worked for me.

The Richard/Kahlan romance. This too, except for the “secrets and the angst” has developed at a good pace. Their dependence on each other seems real enough that the obstacles would not hinder their friendship.

The magic: I found it fascinating that each ‘type’ of magic user has a different mastery of a different magic. I think it added an additional level to the story…as long as you can keep track of who can do what.

Characterization: I think Goodkind did a good job differentiating his characters. His main characters have depth. A couple of his antagonist have depth…although most are just bad for the sake of being bad. I do have a problem with every male character (who is bad) wanting to rape the first woman he sees. The differences in each culture also has merit.

As I mentioned, I am only 70% through the book. Some spoilers have indicated things that I have yet to read. I am now unsure if I will commit to the rest of the series…and I LOVE long series’. I have read Wheel of Time about 4 times, so I am not a drive-by fantasy fan.

I have also read several of Sanderson’s series’ and most recently Karen Miller’s Mage books (which I found to be ‘meh’). I have NOT read Martin yet because I have heard that he likes to kill off his main characters (something that distresses me).

Anyone who reads this review and has some suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

I had mixed feelings about this book
By J. Maxon
I had mixed feelings about this book. When it started I was like, yeah, this is OK. Then there were some clear Star Wars like plot lines (Obi-Wan, anyone?). After that I just started getting bored with the journey. Still, I didn’t give up. I kept on. And I’m glad I did. The story took on a much more original direction, with some emotionally gripping scenes. This isn’t a love story, but there is a type of Romeo and Juliet tragedy entangled within. Some decent twists and interesting characters. Good questions regarding the power of love and hate. The price of justice and forgiveness. Keep in mind that there are scenes more appropriately labeled “adult” than “young.” Some mature sexual content and of course, the expected fantasy violence (does get a bit gory at times). Would personally rate it 18+. Overall, I enjoyed the tale and will look to read the second book down the road.

My all time favorite series! Thank you, Terry, for a great journey!
By norwaysue
I first began reading this series in the 90s and haunted the Fantasy aisle in the bookstore periodically until each new installment was offered. Yes, some basic elements are in the story (a must for the genre) but the premise and the back story details are quite unique and fascinating. I grew up watching swashbuckler and mythical movies on Saturday afternoons and pined for more stories of far away heroes and dangerous adventure that were not at all similar to my safe, suburban reality. Perhaps my youth was as shielded as Richard's youthful years in Westland. The Three Muskateers, Jason and the Arogonauts, and then the original series of Star Trek head up my long list of favorites. This series was a natural for me. It has been a few years since I read The Omen Machine so I will read it again before I read the next 2. I am glad to see several of the series made the New York Best Seller List. Right now, the book club I am in wanted a sci-fi or fantasy selection so I proffered this and am enjoying reading it again. Tonight I will discover if they liked it.

Review
"The Life-Purpose System is absolutely amazing in its predictive value. It will help you sort out your life and guide you on the path of fulfillment."
--Deepak Chopra, M.D., author of Ageless Body, Timeless Mind) --Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Best-selling author Millman invites readers into the world of The Life Purpose System, a method of life-purpose analysis that is similar to numerology yet more practical, using the time of our birth as the indicator of right livelihood. Millman doesnt stop at discussing the eleven basic life paths or their several variations, but has much to say about the influence of spiritual laws, from flexibility and balance to discipline and perfection. Issues of relationship and the cycles of life complete this ambitious work. -- Napra Trade Journal, Holiday 1993

The book is irresistibly accurate and helpful. Liz Bob says check it out. -- Liz Bob, New Leaf Magazine, January/February 1996

There's no doubt I'm a Dan Millman fan - I've reviewed his last three books in the pages of this magazine. His latest book, The Life You Were Born to Live, is by far the most comprehensive and helpful primer for changing non-productive patterns of behavior.

Millman's Life-Purpose System is designed to help you find new meaning, purpose and direction to your life. As a student of numerology, at first glance I thought it might just be an advanced numerological textbook, but upon further study I discovered a deeply-rooted tool to self-analysis (10 years of psychotherapy in 422 pages). By first calculating your Life Path number, (I'm a 24/6) you can determine your life purpose. Mine is Vision and Acceptance. Others might have to work on Trust and Openness, or Expression and Sensitivity, but Millmans book makes you realize that no matter what your life purpose is, you can attain it.

My life purpose is to accept myself and others for their imperfection. When I read the description about myself, I was shocked. It told me everything that I often feel about myself but have not understood before. Instead of doing my best and letting it go, I often get bogged down in the process. As a result, things, and sometimes people, never quite come up to my expectations and I am always disappointed.

As with all of Millman's books, there are only positive affirmations and ways to improve your feelings and actions. For each number combination, Millman helps you to understand your life purpose by working on health and relationship issues and determining your talents, work and financial abilities, as well as keys to fulfilling your destiny. All come together to allow you to truly understand yourself and the laws of spirituality that can change your life for the better.

Like all regimens of study, Millman's Life Purpose System has to be practiced to be effective. In my case I saw that part of my problem is wanting things to happen immediately, and not wanting to wait for the process to take effect. I think I have taken the first baby step in trying to change, first by reading Millman's book and then by writing this review without worrying about whether is was perfect or not. (Well, maybe worrying a little) -- J. Renee Lobenfeld, Whole Life Times, November 1993

From the Back Cover
In what has become a classic reference work read by over a million people worldwide, The Life You Were Born to Live presents a modern method based on ancient wisdom that has helped legions of people find new meaning, purpose, and direction. The Life You Were Born to Live, reveals a precise method to determine your own life path and the life paths of others; your core issues and hidden calling; your innate talents as well as challenges in areas of health, money, sexuality, and other areas.

It also includes guidelines to career and livelihood resonant with your drives and abilities, as well as a section enabling you to access immensely helpful insight into the issues of your personal and professional relationships -- and insight into the nine-year cycles of life and where you currently are in your own cycle.

Perhaps the most significant part of the book are key spiritual or universal laws -- keys to help you overcome the hurdles on your own particular path revealed earlier in the book.

This book has deepened the understanding and even changed the lives of countless people, and can help you to understand your past, clarify the present, and empower your future.

an interesting book
By Michael George
I thought this book was interesting. It is based on a type of numerology somewhat different than astrology. The numerology is associated with a counting system that emphasizes time, in terms of cycles of months and years. That is, of course, related to the orbit of the Moon and the orbit of the Earth about the Sun. That these cycles should be related somewhat to our lives is fairly clear. However, there are also two other cycles. The system of assigning numbers to the birth date are associated with cycles of 9 and 12, where the 12 here has no direct relation to monthly cycles. I find this to be pretty strange, and it certainly tends to make one skeptical of the system. However, I have applied the system to myself and a few other people, and it seems to fit pretty accurately. As some critics have assessed, the system is ambiguous to some extent, and might seem to fit for that reason, or perhaps from a placebo effect, if one is looking for some system. The descriptions remind me a bit of the Enneagram, and it is based on the number 9. Although skeptical, I feel that some aspects here are not just accidental or wishful thinking on my part. I plan to keep an open mind and try to apply the system in this book further, to understand it better. I think that there is something about the book that is meaningful and important, and not just a pure fabrication of the author.

Always on a Table at My House!
By Mark H ✨
Dan Millman's "Secret" Numerology book. Powerfully accurate. I keep comparing the feeling of reading this with the feeling I first had when I read "Linda Goodman's Love Signs". There is an excitement to reading about yourself using your date of birth, it's so personal and uniquely you that it's hard to at least not do a curiousity look. Dan's writing is direct, clear and he maintains a compassionate tone.

I always have one copy (I own four) on a table for guests. It's just too hard to avoid picking it up and starting a conversation. I'm a 35/8 so that's what I would look up in the book (there are other 8s like 26/8 or 17/8 but he gives clear examples and instructions in the beginning chapter.

cant bring myself to believe in any of this
By BoliviaB
Ive read some of dans other books and liked them but this one I just cant get myself to buy into the theories. I know he openly says he doesnt know why it works but it does but I can just see flaws in it. When I was reading it I was thinking it was a bit like horoscopes on steriods , pointing out characteristics and ideas that anyone could apply to themselves really. Another major flaw I thought about was when I was reading the common mistakes part regarding calculating your birth number and it mentioned that sometimes people that are born close to midnight can have their birthdays registered incorrectly and that would mean they are using the "wrong" birth number . Got me thinking about the fact that we have quite a variation in timelines around the world and also some countries have daylight saving time - how does this system account for that? How doe the system know that a person is reading a book in Australia, USA , South America or in UK during the summer or winter?
Finally the advice it gives to try to get you on your path is pretty much just general good advice and nothing more (the only reason it got 2 stars and not just one - at least it has some kind of useful value due to that)

FIVE STARS PLUS. EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR EVERYONE--regardless of knowledge or skill. Great book! By Tibbie TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 20, 2015 Format: Paperback I was contacted by the author and given this book for no charge to review. As an engineer with 35 years experience in the computer industry, I have taken countless corporate classes, community college, technical college and University classes to learn new things and keep my skills updated. I learned BASIC and CPM in the late 1970's so things have come a long long ways. In all these classes I have had expensive text books, expensive class notes (from bookstores), or stacks of copied and recopied notes, tables and articles. I have yet to find any of them enjoyable to read, or even easy to read. I have yet to find any of them complete, error free or able to stand alone as a resource to help you do what you are trying to do. Look at any computer programmers bookshelf, you will see hundreds of books, many of them on the same subjects because none are thorough enough and you have to buy dozens of them. This book is very impressive. Its covers the most important topics and explains everything succinctly. I expected to see the typical charts and diagrams, for example, i expected for HTML to see the color codes and various other reference, and its there, but so much more. The author has taken each of the various components of each topic and listed them by subject and alphabetically sorted, and explained what and how they are used. This is true for all of the subjects--from HTML, to WordPRess, JAVA, --all of it. Its all excellent. Its easy to read, its well written, and I am impressed. I could use this as a text in the classes I have taught and not only do well as an instructor, but the students would and could use this book throughout their careers, or at least through their education if they do not pursue a computer career. Its title, "18 books in 1" is clever because it really is 18 books. I wont list the contents, that would be repetitive, but its got all of the most popular and current reference you would need to build websites, or to manage websites, (ie system administrator/webmaster etc). This is not an easy task and I am in awe of the author for having the wherewithal to not only do it, but to be able to put it all together and do so in a way that makes it usable for everyone from those with little or no experience, to students, to professionals--who would use it as reference material. I liked that it was not a rehash of the same old same old that you read in all of the current books, nor was it just printouts from various websites. There is some very useful and interesting information too, like the % of servers running (list of server software), or % of websites built from (website building applications) and so on. I don't know where he found it, but its interesting to see. Without a doubt I give it 5 stars. I hope he finds great success with this book---he absolutely deserves it. great book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning or doing any kind of website or network administration/building. http://www.amazon.com/review/R1Q1X7IX1TAETT/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=9671317502&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=283155&store=books

Five Stars

LOTS of information but in many cases, more like a reference, and probably not good for newbies; can't download example files
By Lantana Al
Wow. I'm a software developer and I can certainly tell you that there is A LOT of information in this book. It is "super-concise", and probably too concise for a lot of people. I would NOT recommend this book for a beginner or newbie. Intermediate and advanced web developers would likely find it useful. A beginner may find it useful as a reference to use in addition to a "standard" learning book that is not so concise, that takes things more slowly, and that includes more explanation.

In many places (perhaps in more places than not), it gave me the impression of a reference guide instead of teaching book. Keep that in mind. Also, some of the topics went over my head. I guess no one can be an expert in all web technologies anymore, or at least very few people. While I could spend a lot of time "mastering" each chapter, I thought it would be better to set some of the topics aside and come back to them when I have an actual need. You'll probably feel the same way and have chapters that are much more useful to you than others, but the nice thing is that the less-useful chapters might to quite useful to you later, so you'll want to keep this book on-hand.

While there are a lot of examples, you will probably need to "play" with some of them to fully understand them... that means typing them up if you get the paperback version because as far as I know, you can't download the example files. This is quite unfortunate. If you get the Kindle version then you may be able to copy and paste them and not have to type them.

Oh, I also ran into multiple typos and some errors but nothing serious enough to significantly detract from all the information.

So while this book has a lot of information (and I mean A LOT!), because of the above issues I mentioned I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5.

NOTE: I was sent a free product sample for review. I was not paid or told what to write.

**Amazon Top 10 Bestseller**

Mallory Sims is late for her first day of work.

After spilling her tea, she discovers she has no gas in her car. Add that her arm keeps sticking to her dress from syrup left on the console of her car, flustered feels like an understatement.

Then she sees her new boss.

Graham Landry is the epitome of NSFW in his custom-fit suit, black-rimmed glasses, and a look so stern her libido doesn’t stand a chance. Being flustered is just the start of her problems.

Her punctuality is only the start of his. With a pink slip in hand, he’s been waiting on his new secretary to show up only to let her go. Then she rushes in with her doe eyes and rambling excuses, smelling like bacon and lavender. The termination paper falls to the side as she falls in his arms.

This is a disaster in the making. Not because of his pinpoint exactness or her free spirit, but because when they’re together, the sparks that fly threaten to burn the whole place down.

Graham is my new Book Boyfriend
By Michele Ficht
Adriana has done something I didn't think was possible, she made me forget about Barrett and Lincoln Landry because Graham just blew me away! Graham Landry is the brother who takes care of all of the Landrys when it comes to business. He is the go to guy, the man who never fails, the one they all depend on. He has it totally together until the day Mallory Sims walks into his office.

Mallory is not only a beautiful woman, she is a woman with a brain, someone who takes care of things, including looking out for Graham and really seeing him for the man he is. This was the best of the three Landry stories. It is sweet, sexy, emotional, and fun. A book I will re-read more than once because it is that good.

Adriana is a very talented writer who knows how to tell a story that will keep you turning the pages. I could not put this book down. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. If you haven't read her work, you are truly missing out. This is an excellent read. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait for Ford Landry's story

****4.5 ‘It’s in the Details’ STARS****
By Dates With K
“I’m saying…I’m saying I’d like to risk my mental stability and grip on life to have you in it.”

I have Adriana Locke to thank for my latest book boyfriend obsession. But really this comes as no surprise. Hot, sexy alpha men. Sweet, sassy, take-no-bull ladies. And loving, realistic families. These multilayered family of characters stole my heart in book one, Sway and then in book two, Swing – and haven’t let go since. I truly don’t want them to; I love spending time with the Landry’s, and Switch is no exception.

“This is my legacy. You have your hero medals. Barrett has his public service. Lincoln has batting titles and Golden Gloves. I have this.”

He’s a man with a plan. And a backup plan. He doesn’t deviate, he doesn’t dawdle and he certainly does. Not. Fail. Motivated by the love for his family, on the outside Graham Landry (H), CEO of Landry Holdings, comes off as an uptight, obsessive-compulsive perfectionist without a heart. Little does he know that his new Executive Assistant is going to tip his world on its axis – and make him long for something he’s never had time for – love.

“Here tucked away in the living room, where I feel like I can drop all the hats – and sometimes, masks – that I wear daily. There’s nothing to juggle as I put my feet up on the leather ottoman and breathe.”

Starting over is hard. Too many years getting lost in a relationship that was going nowhere and feeding her self-doubts daily leads to an epic epiphany for Mallory/Mal Sims (h). Packing up and heading for her hometown she’s on a mission to create a meaningful life – with purpose, laughter and love. A little clumsy, a lot messy and a sassy powerhouse of attitude, Mallory is just what Graham needs to shake up his control and open up his eyes to life outside Landry Holdings and with Mallory. As his new Executive Assistant it’s a prime opportunity to do just that.

“I want to feel…like the me I used to know. I want to feel alive. I want to wake up and smile. I want to accomplish things, to feel powerful. I want to have things to look forward to, have goals, find someone who wants to laugh with me, or go hiking or get ice cream.”

With each book the couples become my favorite of the series only to be replaced with the next release. It’s incredibly easy to fall in love with this series, and Graham and Mallory in particular. For all his need to pull the stick out and relax, Graham’s propensity for order and Mallory’s tendency for chaos flies in the face of his need and is entertaining. The witty banter, the sexy, sly innuendo they trade back and forth is hot and then as the layers peel back you see the reasons for Graham’s idiosyncrasies – and Mallory’s perceptive, caring response. Deftly balancing the budding relationship with moments from family and friends rounds out this tale beautifully. It’s those moments, cleverly blended into the characters lives that cement this series, this author, on my auto-read list. This story certainly has it all – an intuitive understanding of human nature and family dynamics mixed in with hilarious banter (Lincoln almost steals the show followed closely by Ford), witty repartee (I love blunt Mallory), palpable chemistry and smoking hot sexy times (Syrup anyone?) and tangible characters that you’d like to meet (I’d love to have dinner at the Landry Farm). The lightheartedness and love that surrounds this book made me giddy, yes giddy, with happiness and I was delighted to spend my afternoon with Graham, Mallory and the rest of the gang.

“‘What you don’t know is that today was a day of firsts for me.’
He takes a deep breath.
‘The first day I woke up and stared at a woman before getting out of bed, wishing she would never leave. The first day I failed at something as the head of Landry Holdings. The first day I felt the complete and utter fear of losing someone.’”

Consistently captivating me with her genuine couples, beautiful and hilarious family dynamics and realistic and poignant take on relationships, Adriana Locke and the Landry Family Series, Switch in particular, is a definite recommended read. I fell in love with Graham and Mallory; insta-love in one page. And I hope you do too.

“I’m aware I am an addict and I measure my drugs in Grahams.”

K’s Category: 3rd date, several novels read by author to date.
Characters: M/F
OM/OW: N
Sex: Yes, descriptive
HEA: Y
Standalone: Yes, although you’ll have a richer experience reading the series in order, Swing (Barrett) and Sway (Lincoln).

Loving me some Graham and Mallory!! Must Read!
By Kristi_Lynn-BBR
This was the story of Graham Landry and Mallory Simms. We have gotten to know a bit of Graham in the previous two Landry books. He is the broody alpha, CEO of the family business. Graham is the put together one who always has a plan and always looks out for all members of the family in all aspects of their lives. Mallory Sims has just moved back to town and gets an administrative assistant role to one Graham Landry. She is picking up the pieces of a failed relationship and starting over. With her new job, broody boss and intense reaction to him, nothing could go wrong, right?

What I Loved About This Book
I was anxiously awaiting this book from Adriana. I fell in love with Graham in the previous books and could not wait for his story! Could this control hungry CEO be tamed and fall in love? Adriana did not disappoint with this one. These two characters were amazing. They were endearing from the beginning of the story. The chemistry and natural connection they had was hard not to fall in love with immediately. I love an alpha male who thinks he is in control of everything. Little do they know the right woman will shake things up and change everything they thought they knew. Enter Mallory. She is feisty, sassy and the type of female lead character I absolutely adore. She is strong willed, smart and the one person to keep Graham on his toes. This book had me laughing out loud, smiling like a cheese ball and fanning myself with the off the chart chemistry.

What I Did Not Love About This Book
There was nothing I didn’t love! It was amazing!

I happily give this books five stars and will be recommending it like a fool! It is on the must read list for sure!! Oh and bring on Ford! I am ready for him to capture my heart!!

His teamwork class was designed primarily for engineering and business students at Cal Poly. He has conducted research and worked as a consultant with factory and engineering teams for companies such as Nortel Networks, TRW, Hewlett-Packard, and Philips Electronics. In addition, he has worked on international team research projects in Europe and Asia.

Dr. Levi’s research and consulting with factory teams primarily has focused on the use of teams to support technological change and the adoption of just-in-time and quality programs. This work examined a variety of team issues, including job redesign, training, compensation, supervision, and change management approaches. His work with professional teams primarily has been done with engineering design teams. These projects examined the use of concurrent engineering, self-management, and the globalization of teams. The topics of this work included the impact of information technology on teams, facilitation and training needs for professional teams, and the impacts of organizational culture and leadership.

Early work on the present book was sponsored by an engineering education grant from NASA. This project focused on the development of teamwork skills in engineering students working on multidisciplinary projects. This project led to the development of cases and activities for learning teamwork skills and research on teamwork training and evaluating and rewarding student teams. Recent research on student teams examines gender and cross-cultural issues, social support within teams, and bullying and hijacking in student teams.

Comprehensive
By R. Shelley
This book is very thorough at explaining the dynamics of teams without using too many examples. I'm not a huge fan of examples since I typically understand what is being explained. It is not formatted like a text book so if you are interested in skimming for homework, this will not be an easy book to skim. I have found it much more helpful to read the chapters as they are not that long in the first place.
If you are looking to work in a team atmosphere in the future or work in one now, regardless of your career or major, this is a good book to have on hand.

The Method of Our Mission: United Methodist Polity & Organization, by Laceye C. Warner

Theology shapes who we are and how we organize to transform the world. Especially written for required United Methodist classes, this accessible book uses a Wesleyan theological frame—connection—to help readers understand United Methodism’s polity and organization as the interrelationship of our beliefs, mission, and practice. The book is organized into four parts—United Methodist beliefs, mission, practice, and organization. Polity and organization are primary embodiments of The United Methodist Church. Functional in nature, these aspects of the denomination facilitate our mission to make disciples for the transformation of the world. This book connects denominational governance and organization to our beliefs as well as our mission. A clear understanding of our identity—as Methodists with Wesleyan roots in connection—and our purpose—to make disciples for the transformation of the world—can help students of United Methodism navigate this treacherous landscape as present and future leaders. Warner also addresses the estrangement between theology and institutional structures and practice by framing governance practices and organizational structure within a Wesleyan theology of connection. This approach will assist current and future denominational leaders in understanding their practices of administration and participation in polity as a theological endeavor and key component of their ministries.

This textbook has been updated with changes from the 2016 General Conference.

This book provides a good overview of the structure and mission of The United Methodist Church. The organization of the information is a little odd and too many chapter summaries are provided. I found much more detailed information in "Polity, Practice and the Mission of The United Methodist Church" by Thomas Frank.

Solid and Grounded Insights

Warner does an incredible job of providing a theological and missional lens to UMC polity and structure. As a historian, she pays close attention to the subtle shifts of the ecclesial body over time. As a new clergy member in the UMC, I found this book to be invaluable in understanding the nature and make-up of this body.

Gauntlets of Ogre Power, Belt of Giant Strength, Hammer of Thunderbolts!
By Herb Mallette
Over the years, none of the Dungeons and Dragons manuals has changed as much as the Dungeon Master’s Guide. It began as a tome of potent secrets, to be jealously guarded from the feckless eyes of mere players. Were a DM so inclined, he or she could prevent the players from even knowing how their to-hit rolls matched up against armor class to establish the results of a sword-blow or bowshot. Experience point values for monsters, the effects of magic items, even simple rules for movement remained the purview of the game-master.

As the game grew, and more and more options arose for building characters, the basics of play moved into the Player’s Handbook, and the DMG relinquished XP values to the Monster Manual and most of the combat rules to the PHB. In the process, it morphed into a nuts-and-bolts toolbox, starting off with rules on combat management, followed by practical sections covering environmental hazards, towns and villages, NPC generation, NPC character classes, and so on. In both 3E and 4E, it opened with a narrow focus and gradually got wider and wider in scope, with the culminative chapters advising the DM on how to run a campaign and build a world.

The new edition does exactly the opposite, and therein lies its genius.

If there’s one thing that D&D is always about, it’s the experience of stepping out of this world and into another. The fifth edition DMG establishes how important that notion is by putting the world- and cosmos-building chapters up front. Creating a fantastical environment for players to adventure in and journey through is no longer something you eventually get around to by the end of the book; it’s front-and-center as the DM’s first responsibility. You don’t arrive at the “It’s Your World” headline half or two-thirds or three-quarters of the way through the book: it’s on the opening page of Chapter One.

From world-crafting, the book moves into storytelling, with chapters on designing and running adventures, populating them with colorful personages, and linking them with character-oriented downtime. It’s important to note that the magic item catalog resides in this section, because in this version of D&D magic items are not just buffs for players to enhance their characters’ abilities with; they’re the payoff for stories, and they’re explicitly supposed to feel unique, with their own origins and stories attached.

To create that feeling, the new DMG does what no other ever has: it copiously and beautifully illustrates the magic item section with free-standing images of the items themselves. The drawings spread across a third of every page, luxurious close-shots with nary a character in sight, making it plain that these are not mere accessories, but truly objects of sorcery and enchantment. If you’re an old-school gamer and you have any kind of sentimentality to you, you owe it to yourself to go a bookstore and have a look. The illustrations are so glorious they have to be seen to be believed. I literally got choked up looking at the dozens of perfectly imagined rings, robes, rods and staves around the 200-page mark. It’s natural to expect a cool picture of a flametongue or some figurines of wondrous power, but the art directors for this book went the extra mile and found artists who could render wands and rings jaw-dropping.

Of course, even the most beautiful rulebook – which this one is – ultimately succeeds or fails on the basis of its gaming content. Here too, the new DMG is a remarkable success.

Tables and charts are a longtime staple of RPG books in general and DMGs in particular, and this case is no exception. What is unusual is how richly imaginative and story-driven many of the tables are. The table of magic item quirks doesn’t just customize the game effects of items; each entry provides a sense of background and reality, or a dash of personality to spur creative role-play. The 3.5 DMG had a table of 100 NPC traits. In 4.0, there were two tables for mannerisms and appearance. Here, the tables for generating NPC details stretch across six pages and provide specific game-applicable hooks for motives, methods, and personalities that simultaneously provide quick tools to generate unique antagonists and also a source of inspiration for jumping off in any number of story directions. Even the table describing costs for magic item creation is a story driver, because when you do the math (one day of work for every 25 g.p. in an item’s manufacturing cost), you find that legendary items take about 54 years for a 17th level mage to craft. Who has that kind of time? Obviously, only an elf, a particularly obsessive dwarf, or some spellcaster of a shorter-lived race who has learned the secret of near-immortality. A vorpal weapon is therefore not just a set of game mechanics that let you lop off heads on a natural 20 – it’s someone’s life work, or at the very least an elf archmage’s long-term hobby.

In short, every element of this book – the art, the rules tables, the text, the graphic design – has been carefully designed to make you, as a dungeon master, want to be your most creative. To imbue your campaign and its adventures with all the potential these pages promise. You may disagree with some of the specific choices – perhaps you’d rather enable adventuring characters to craft a ring of invisibility by taking a few months off from dungeon-crawling. But as always, the book actively encourages you to throw out whatever doesn’t suit your needs.

My group is in the final stages of a massive campaign from another game, but I’m bursting over with excitement to put this book to use at the first available chance.

And yes, for the first time in ... what, 20 years? ... the belt/gauntlets/hammer combo lets you kill giants instantly. If that means something to you, get this book.

*THE* Quintessential D&D Reference Manual
By J. Burgos
What can I say? This book rounds out the Holy Trinity (tm) of D&D 5th edition. With this book the DM or Dungeon Master, has everything she needs to tell the stories that the PC's or Player Characters, need to bring this game to life. I predict that this book, and the entire run of 5th edition, will be winning major awards, and this book firmly establishes D&D as a relevant Role Playing Game brand again after the unfortunate disaster that was 4th edition. In summary, the art in this book is fantastic, starting with the great cover. This is the DMG that is everything I've come to expect in a 5e rule book. Following the exceptional job done in the PHB and Monster Manual, I expected nothing less. The full splash color pages are evocative and stunning, and really give you a sense of what D&D is all about. The fantasy worlds and creatures come to life on every page. Everything is fresh, new, and original, and this book rounds out the 3 books that encompass Dungeons and Dragons. My nod to Pathfinder (or as its referred to D&D 3.75): peruse this book and be prepared to return to the loving arms of D&D again...

Now, lets get down to business: To say there are a lot of table in the 5e DMG is an understatement. This book is packed full of tables. Every section has tables to help the DM use the mechanics quickly and easily. All the tables reminded me of the original 1e DMG, whihc was a good thing. Here is the breakdown:

Chapter 1: A World of Your Own
Whether you're a new DM who's never played before or you're a player who hasn't played in a very long time then this chapter provides a great introduction to world-building. If you're an experienced DM and you've played any previous edition of D&D in the last few years you can quickly peruse this section.

However, for the experienced DMs the only things that you may want to take a look at quickly is the section on Factions & Renown and Tiers of Play.

The Faction section lacks the details about special missions you can run your PC's through. The Renown section talks briefly about attitudes of members and special privaleges. There are new rules on losing renown and new rules for how to use renown for pious characters to measure their devotion. The four basic tiers of game play are covered, namely:
Levels 1-4: Local Heroes
Levels 5-10: Heroes of the Realm
Levels 11-16: Masters of the Realm
Levels 17-20: Masters of the World
There are also guidelines for beginning play at higher levels and a sidebar that establishes how much equipment, money and magic to give PCs starting above level 1 in low magic campaigns, standard campaigns, and high magic campaigns.

Chapter 2: Creating a Multiverse
Ah the multiverse! Its no longer a Joss Whedon concept, (and I surmise that Mr. Whedon himself got this term from playing D&D) If you are an experienced DM who has familiarity with the Manual of the Planes (any edition) then you can likely skip this chapter too. It's essentially condensed material that covers the many worlds, or Multiverse, of the D&D plannar worlds. It's a handy section to cover if your campaign spans the Multiverse, but for everyday adventures, especially the kind you generally see at low levels and introductory play, this is too much too soon. I am very thrilled to see that the Shadowfell, the Feywild and the plannar city of Sigil make a return to 5th edition in this section. I predict we will see a future supplement covering these.

Chapter 3: Creating Adventures
This chapter is the meat and bones of the DMG. The chapter begins with a comprehensive breakdown of what makes a good adventure and then talks about the difference between playing a published adventure and one you make up yourself. There are lots of tables that present numerous options detailing the different types of adventures, complications like plot-twists and side quests, how to create encounters with a strong focus on objectives and monsters, and how and when to use random encounters. This section rounds up with the in's and outs of creating exciting encounters for your party.

Chapter 4: Creating Nonplayer Characters
NPC's or Non Player Characters, are the world of D&D. These are played by the DM, and mastering how to play these can truly make a game shine. This chapter offers insights and tables for personalizing and really bringing these rather 2 dimensional characters to the 3rd dimension. The optional Loyalty Rules are covered in this section.

Villains, the quintessential antagonists of the D&D verse are given three huge tables which give the DM plenty of options to choose or roll when they need a quick villain that's not your standard bad guy. The crowning jewel in this section are the Villainous Class Options. Cleric can chose the Death Domain and the Paladin can choose Oathbreaker. My only disappointment with this section is that only one domain is covered. I truly hope that we will see future Domains covered, but for now this is the only one given to the DM. The Oathbreaker, or Anti-Paladin, in particular can actually atone and change back into a good aligned Paladin, but it's a difficult undertaking.

Chapter 5: Adventure Environments
This chapter is really handy for DM's who have never built environment encounters before because it talks about campaigns that take place outside ot the typical city, or in a dungeon, in the wilderness, or in an urban setting. It covers how to describe these settings, how to map them, filling them with challenges and monsters, and how to survive in the harshest of environments.

The section on Adventures in Unusual Environments, which essentially covers environments such as underwater or in the sky, are handy for the DM to have and were entertaining to read through. However, the real highlight of this chapter was the pages which covered traps. After a very brief overview of how to use traps, there are 11 great sample traps. I am certain that all DMs will find clever and creative ways to use these deadly traps in their campaigns soon enough.

Chapter 6: Between Adventures
What happens when your adventurers are not saving damsels or slaying dragons? Here the DMG gives a few additional options beyond those already described in the PHB. Here's a sample of Awesomesauce to wet your palate:

Building a Stronghold: Spend 60-1,200 downtime days and 5,000-500,000 gp and you've got yourself a brand new stronghold.
Carousing: When you want to party like it's 1999 then spend those downtime days on some serious partying.
Crafting Magic Items: Aside from the time and resources required to actually acquire the materials that the DM decides you need to make your magic item, you have to spend some downtime days.
Gaining Renown: Want to rise through the ranks of your faction? Spend some downtime days to make a name for yourself.
Perform Sacred Rites: Pray long enough and you'll get inspiration for it. How much is up to the DM.
Running a Business: Adventuring is hard work, so when the monsters are defeated come home, relax, and work at your day job.
Sell Magic Items: In a world with few magic items there are fewer still who can afford to buy them. It takes many downtime days to find a suitable buyer. Maybe you should just keep the item?
Sowing Rumors: Now the Bard and the Rogue can put those social skills to work by slandering your enemies and making the party sound more heroic than they really are. The bigger the town the longer it takes.
Training to Gain Levels: (This is one Im using at the 3rd tiers and higher) As a variant rule the DM may require you to train before you can advance to the next level. Don't worry it'll only take 10-40 days depending on your level.

Chapter 7: Treasure
This is the quintessential section of the DMG that covers the description of magic items. This is my favorite section of the DMG. The art is stunning--Ive never seen its like before in any previous DMG. Most items have full colour pictures which always makes an item seem special. Some of the illustrations pay homage to previous editions of D&D. Here we see the Manual of Bodily Health, the Talisman of the Sphere, which is shaped like the demon face carving some may recognize from the Tomb of Horrors, the Deck of Many Things shows the faces of nine cards. Also included after all the descriptions of magic items are details for sentient items and good old artifacts.

Also included are 11 tables for randomly determining gem and art objects. They're not as detailed as the ones in the classic 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide hardcover, but they'll certainly do the job. There are also good options presented on attuning items, identifying items, and cursed items. There is a table in this DMG that lists some possible consequences of mixing potions.

Rounding out this chapter, there are six pages that talk about other rewards beyond gold pieces and magic items. These include things like blessings, medals, land, favours, strongholds, and training. The last section in rewards is Epic Boons. They're only available to PCs who are level 20 and they are truly epic.

Chapter 8: Running the Game
Much is this is expanded material that is already covered in the free DMG Basic Rules PDF that Wizards of the Coast has made available on their website as a free download: http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

For new DMs this section gives you everything you need to know to run a good session. It covers a lot of details but each section is very short and to the point.

We are further given a few optional or more advanced rules in this chapter including ways to adjust monster damage severity, as well as guidelines for using maps (grids or hexes, which is almost the default style of D&D combat) and how to determine the tactical aspects that come with it such as flanking to gain advantage and facing rules. There are rules for handling chases, stats for siege equipment, and two pages on poison including the details for some of the deadlier varieties.

Chapter 9: Dungeon Master's Workshop
This chapter presents the reasons this is the best DMG of any previous editon of D&D. Many optional rules are presented here and I hope this section is what inspires new DMs to see the beauty of 5th edition.

Much of this chapter is not material that is expected to appear at every game table. In true sand-box style, If you like or dislike something you read in this chapter, talk to the players and DMs in your group and as a group collectively divide which ones you think will work and which ones wont.

Proficiency dice replace the flat modifier in your traied skills. Instead you get a proficiency dice to roll when using skills you're trained in. It eliminate auto-success and allows you to try some crazy and wacky stuff knowing that if you roll really well it just might work.
Hero points are basically the 3e action points. You get a set number of hero points and when you spend one you roll 1d6 and add it to the check. You can also just cash in the points to do cool things including automatically stabilizing if you're dying.
Honor and Sanity scores. If you want to play a game with a traditional Asian feel or you want to port in your Call of Cthulhu campaign to D&D, now you have mechanics that will help you do both.
Healing and resting options allow you to speed up healing by using healing surges like we did in 4e and making a short rest take only 5 minutes. Or you can slow down healing making short rests 8 hours and long rests 7 days.
Firearms and Explosives are introduced here. Want to play a D&D game where your adventurer's are magically transported to a wold of 6 Guns & Sorcery? You got the rules right here. What about visiting the famous D&D world of Boothill? It has you covered. Plot points borrow heavily from FATE system (and that is a good thing). If you want something to happen or you want to change the scene as its unfolding, use a plot point. One interesting variant is to use plot points to change DMs mid-adventure. Initiative variations include doing group initiative for team heroes vs. team monsters, applying speed factors to individuals based on weapon type, and my personal favourite, making initiative a passive Dexterity check for everyone all the time.
So you have the Monster Manual but you can't find the exact monster you need? No problem. Now you can create you own monster. There is a 20-step procedure for making monsters that literally breaks down each line of a the monster's stat block. As you add each ability, power, or magical spell the tables explain how the monster's power level and CR change. This is the most in-depth monster creation I've seen in any edition yet it's quite simple and easy to follow. Experienced DMs will love this. You can even give monsters class levels and spell casting abilities.
Best part? You can create your own Magic Items as a DM!

Finally there are guidelines for adjusting what's already in the PHB including new sub-races, adjusting the classes and making your own backgrounds. The Eladrin and Aasimar, covered in previous editions of D&D, are both presented as example sub-races.
Appendix A: Random Dungeons

Quick and dirty rules for creating your own dungeons. There are 12 pages filled with tables allowing the DM to randomly roll up a dungeon in just a few minutes, (however, the DM can just as easy pick and chose from these tables if a less random approach is desired). It covers everything fom doors, stairs, the dungeon's purpose, to the state of the dungeon when the PCs arrive, to traps, and all kinds of dungeon dressing.

Appendix B: Monster Lists

Contains supplemental material and tables for the Monster Manual which do not belong in the MM (for DM's eyes only). Monsters listed by 11 different types of environments and monsters listed by challenge rating.

Appendix C: Maps

Quick and accessible sample maps for handy use on the fly. This appendix covers these in full, stunning color and detail.

Summary: This is the DMG to own. Even if you play Pathfinder or other Fantasy RPG this book is the quintessential Reference Manual for fantasy gaming and belongs on every essential reference library.

D&D back to the 70's, when it really became popular!!!
By Michael E. Mayeau
D&D has gone back to the original system which made it so popular in the 70's. Gone are the "Play by the Number" rules where every decision is made and printed down in advance. The DMG really is a "Guide" and it leaves it up to the DM's to create and run their own campaign the way I did 35 years ago. If you do a good job players will stay and your campaign will last years, if you don't it dies and you can't blame crummy rules made up by writers you have never met.
After the 3.5 & 4th Ed debacle of endless books to buy and infinite rules to memorize I quit D&D for another game system and when 5th came out planned to ignore it totally. But a friend told me they were only coming out with the 3 main books and were planning on making money selling pre-made adventures, so I tried it as a player in his campaign.
I liked it and bought the DMG. After I reading the first 4-5 pages I KNEW I was going to start my own campaign, which I have.
As a final note this game is NOT for "Rule's Lawyers" as... there are NO rules to argue with the DM over! The campaign flies or falls on the DM's decisions and creativity.
