Author James Redfield takes readers to the mountains of Tibet in search of the mythical place called Shambhala, otherwise known as Shangri-La. Like his previous bestselling books, Redfield holds the tension between an adventure travel story (in this book, armed Chinese soldiers doggedly pursue him) and divine encounters. Rather than preach his spiritual beliefs, Redfield likes to portray himself as a naive pilgrim, receiving wisdom and insights from the various guides and teachers he meets on his metaphysical journeys.

Shambhala is indeed a paradise, just as it was lovingly portrayed in the famous James Hilton novel Lost Horizon. Purchased for My Mother who read and RE-READ "The Celestine Prophecy" and the second book written first place in this series yearly, and BEGGED Me to do the Same Yearly after she had Re-read them again, She would again beg Me to READ these books until I finally read "The Celestine Prophecy" when I was in My Early 20s.. Years after they'd been published the first time. Then I happened across these online not last Christmas but the One before it, and My Mother who's in the process of losing her memories, I just hoped and prayed She could get though the books I had found on luck and a prayer. She was SO surprised that they had continued the series, it was GREAT!! PERFECT REALLY, even My Husband who was skeptical about the series was pleased with the books appearance and quality.

The Secret...Realize your Intentions

The quote to intrigue and compel you to read this book: "You must understand that inside you is a great power that can be cultivated and extended, a mental energy that has always been called a prayer field." The term prayer field in this setting is in no way tangled up in the religious connotations, of kneeling down to prayer. As Chauncey Gardner said in the great movie starring Peter Sellers Being There, coincidently a very intuitive person, "you must learn to tend your garden." This book, in an entertaining novel way, begins to shine the light on how to do that. While it seems to be a Secret to too many folks, it's is my belief that really it's an intuitive reality that only needs to be, as I write in my book `Love is a Blooming Rose' awakened to.

This book takes James Redfield's points from his books Celestine Prophecy and Tenth Insight and adds to them in what I would call an `adstory', a Murphyism that can be associated with the term adverb. Adstory more appropriately applies to this book than sequel, because while Redfield takes the same adventurer approach he continues to add to his moral message. In Celestine and the Tenth Insight he describes how we come to a worldview understanding of a new spiritual awareness. In Shambhala he elaborates on what you do when you realize that you have it THE SECRET, the title of another intriguing book, and are part of it.

This adventure takes the reader trekking through the Tibetan Himalayas to a place called Shambhala. To give the book a sense of adventure and intrigue, trekking may not be the best word. The main character of the book is actually being chased through Tibet by the Chinese military looking to squelch the secret in the war over people's minds. He gets caught and then interacts with his enemy, only to find out that there are no enemies. Upon arrival, the reader comes to learn that Shambhala is a mythical place that only has a geographical location because you are trekking there. And that trek has a physical journey and a spiritual journey. Shambala is a place in your mind.

Says Redfield: "On the world view spectrum there are doomsday voices showing us that that our Western lifestyle is not sustainable. These folks are countered by technologists who invent there way to the next unsustainable plateau. Which over the history of man is a very short step to the next break through, giving us the impression that time is speeding up." But then I ask what is time? (see my many reviews on this subject...space and time) This book proposes a sustainable future for mankind. It's somewhat of a paradigm shift for those who have not awakened to the Secret.

So to navigate the poles of this spectrum, Redfield offers sustainable growth along with humane technology growth. It is an evolution of slowly turning pages. This is Redfield thesis in a entertaining venue. What I hear in those words is: A growth in technology that takes a look at the `whole of our social being before it introduces scientific break-thru's to society. I call it science with a conscience. I have been pleading for this for years. Is there a law of attraction that finally has me read this book? Imagine, science not conned by the need to push through for the sake of pure science. Imagine an intuitive move toward the sacred, and optimism based on a spiritual vision of where the world can go. Spiritual intuition is a metaphor that comes out of the book. So what is that? It is the subtle turning of pages in your life that embrace synchronicity; those mysterious coincidences that could pop up in a second that makes a page turn on to a new chapter in your life.

Where the book goes beyond previous Redfield books in this area is the subject of prayer. Not payers that start with "bless me father." Not prayers that start with "Dear God I need..." The rest is found by searching on key word cigarroomofbooks. Please share your views.

Brooks, the author of the determinedly straight-faced parody The Zombie Survival Guide (2003), returns in all seriousness to the zombie theme for his second outing, a future history in the style of Theodore Judson's Fitzpatrick's War. Brooks tells the story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat with a series of first-person accounts "as told to the author" by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. The tale then follows the outbreak via testimony of smugglers, intelligence officials, military personnel and many others who struggle to defeat the zombie menace. Despite its implausible premise and choppy delivery, the novel is surprisingly hard to put down. In a deadpan voice, Brooks exhaustively details zombie incidents from isolated attacks to full-scale military combat: "what if the enemy can't be shocked and awed? Not just won't, but biologically can't!" With the exception of a weak BAT-21 story in the second act, the "interviews" and personal accounts capture the universal fear of the collapse of society--a living nightmare in which anyone can become a mindless, insatiable predator at a moment's notice. Alas, Brad Pitt's production company has purchased the film rights to the book--while it does have a chronological element, it's more similar to a collection of short stories: it would make for an excellent 24-style TV series or an animated serial. For the intelligent zombie fan

I got this book to prepare for an end-of-the-world class in my Mythology course, despite not being much of a zombie fan, but ended up loving it. This book is nothing at all like the movie, and that's a good thing. As others have commented, it's told as individual stories told years after the events, and the characterization, and the thought about military, medical, and social implications are all compelling. There is some unexpected interweaving of stories as well. The narrators are from different places, professions, perspectives, and lifestyles, and the zombies are more like the zombies we know and sorta love since Night of the Living Dead. Definitely for the intelligent zombie fans, in particular in offering strategic ideas to those who, like my daughter, keep plywood, hammer and nails handy in case it becomes necessary to board up our windows when the zombies come.

A very in depth, well written, and well thought out!!!

This book is completely different for the movie, which is a good thing. In the book, the main character interviews a large number of different people to get all angles of what happened during the zombie apocalypse. These interviews cover things that happened before the zombie outbreak, how it started, the beginning of the zombie outbreak, the war that follows, civilian life during the zombie outbreak, soldier life during the battles, and the aftermath of the zombie outbreak. This is a great book and would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about zombies!!

Very Cool

This was a gift for my husband, but I ended up bogarting it before he even finished. Even though it’s not a genre I would typically read I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was extremely creative and Brooks did an excellent job conveying all of the different characters who told their individual stories about the zombie wars. The progression was great, from the first sign of outbreak to the cleanup efforts. I only wish some of the implications made weren’t so ambiguous, but so much of what was unspoken about the global calamity can be left to the reader’s imagination.

I think the following quote best sums the whole thing up: “All human armies need supplies, this army didn’t. No food, no ammo, no fuel, not even water to drink or air to breathe! There were no logistics lines to sever, no depots to destroy… It’s ironic that the only way to kill a zombie is to destroy its brain because, as a group, they have no collective brain to speak of. There was no leadership, no chain of command, no communication or cooperation on any level. There was no president to assassinate, no HQ bunker to surgically strike. Each zombie is its own, self-contained, automated unit, and this last advantage is what truly encapsulates the entire conflict… They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until the very end…”

This book explores the factors underlying this fall and rise, to discuss the on-going catch up in the world economy driven by industrialization and economic growth. Their impressive performance, disaggregated analysis shows, is characterized by uneven development. There is an exclusion of countries and people from the process. The catch up is concentrated in a few countries. Growth has often not been transformed into meaningful development that improves the wellbeing of people. Yet, the beginnings of a shift in the balance of power in the world economy are discernible. Deepak Nayyar, Emeritus Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and former Distinguished University Professor of Economics, New School for Social Research, New York

Deepak Nayyar is Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, New York. He has taught at the University of Oxford, the University of Sussex, and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi. He also served as Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He was educated at St. Stephen's College and the Delhi School of Economics. He is an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. Professor Nayyar served as Chairman of the Board of WIDER, Helsinki, and on the Board of Directors of the Social Science Research Council in the United States. He is Vice Chairman of the South Centre, Geneva. His research interests are primarily in the areas of international economics, macroeconomics and development economics.

An almost purely empirical examination of the issue (with practically no theory)

This book presents a large number of empirical observations regarding the gap between the less developed nations and the more developed from 1820 until 2010. Very little is presented, in terms of theory, with respect to explaining the empirical observations. The book, very much, reminds this reviewer of the view put forth, by the imminent economist Richard Schmalonsee, in his chapter in the Handbook of Industrial Organization, in the late 1980s - early 1990s, on the need to uncover "stylized facts" (ie., empirical observations and relationships as opposed to theories). Catch Up does a decent job at uncovering and presenting such "stylized facts" in the area of developmental economics dealing with the relationship between the less and more developed nations. The book is so thick in the presentation of these relationships that text is barely even necessary. One can absorb nearly the entire book by merely looking at the tables and graphs alone. There is barely even a need to read the book's text. Among the more important "stylized facts" the book presents are (this list is by no means all inclusive):

* In the early through mid 1800s the less developed nations accounted for the bulk of the world's estimated GDP. India and China alone accounted for roughly half. This is not a surprise as before the industrial revolution GDP was primarily agricultural and based on craftsman like industries. These, in turn, were highly correlated with population (a fact not mentioned in the book).
* During the above period per capita GDPs worldwide, between the less developed and more developed nations were, more or less, even.
* After the mid-1800s the percentage of world GDP started to shift dramatically from the less developed to more developed nations. This trend hit a peak in approximately 1950 then started to reverse. In the little theory that is presented in the book the author, Dr. Nayyar, attributes this trend to the initial advantages the industrialized nations had in terms of economic efficiency in combination with the fact that many of the less developed nations, especially China and India, were forced to open their markets up to the more leading industrialized nations. Dr. Nayyar also attributes part of the explanation to advances in transport technology and communications technology that facilitated this trade. Dr. Nayyar points out, in support of this view, the fact that Latin America, with the high barriers to trade enacted after its nation states were established, did not suffer the dramatic relative decreases in GDP India and China did. Dr. Nayyar, unfortunately, does not examine how important these different factors were relative to each other in causing the relative decline in aggregate GDP until 1950.
* Per capita GDPs also followed a similar trend.
* After 1950, the less developed nation's percentage of GDP, again in particular India and China, started to increase relative to the developed nations. This relationship was exponential in nature. It started off slowly in in the 1950s increased in the 1960s, started a take-off in the 1980s and then finally exploded in the 1990s and reached the stratosphere, in relative terms, in the 2000s. Unfortunately little theory or other explanation is offered behind this. Could this have been due to the end of colonialism? The drop in tariffs resulting from WTO (and other) trade agreements? What was the importance of foreign investment, both direct and indirect in this relationship? What about the decreasing cost of transportation? What about technologies that enabled the outsourcing of manufacturing from the developed to less developed nations (i.e., information technology)? No explanation whatsoever is provided.
* Inequalities are examined between the less and more developed nations, as a whole. As a whole they decreased but only because of the growth of some outliers such as China and India. If we exclude the best performing LDCs this inequality has barely budged.
* Inequality within the less developed nations has increased dramatically, in much the same way that increased in the more developed during their periods of industrialization from the mid-1850s to the First World War.

The author also provides many other interesting empirical observations that involve too many variables to discuss in this review. Dr. Nayyar is also careful in stressing that quite a bit of the data these observations were based on leave much to be desired thus should be taken with a bit of salt. However, it is still a good starting point. Dr. Nayyar is also careful to point out that the less developed nations are quite heterogeneous. This applies to even the top 14 or so of the most successful. Some were relatively closed (i.e., India) while others very free trade (i.e., Hong Kong, Singapore) while others were neo-mercantilist (i.e., Japan and South Korea). Dr. Nayyar states that they all had, in common, the fact that they had a number of institutions set up that enabled them to develop. However, Dr. Nayyar provides very little discussion and analysis regarding this. This, in this reviewer's opinion, is the most significant weakness of the book.

In conclusion, the book provides many empirical observations that are quite fascinating even though the author does not make a serious attempt to explain them in terms of theory. The empirical data alone, though, makes this book worth reading.

As promised, a beautiful book

I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with other customers in the review section. For the price, this is a FIVE-STAR book. It is illustrated beautifully with full color photographs. I have the hard-copy and not the Kindle version (though I do own a Kindle). My guess is that the pages would present stunningly on the Kindle for iPad or Kindle for Mac. I also have a Kindle E-ink reader. I doubt it would show well on that last device. I noticed one of the reviewers criticized the photo quality. I must disagree. I find it to be top notch. It is presented in a matte format rather than glossy print.. so my guess is the reviewer would have preferred the glossy versions. I, on the other hand, love the matte finishes on all the photographs which are nicely crisp and detailed.

EXCELLENT book for the price. A perfect gift for a history buff. I love it and I bought it here on Amazon.

Leisurely Cruise through History of Mankind

This is an excellent read. As usual, BBC does not disappoint. The book is compiled from transcripts of a 100-episode series on BBC Radio. One hundred objects are thoughtfully picked from exhibits at the British Museum to chronicle the history of mankind, from its earliest beginnings up to the 21st century. The 100 chapters are short, but solid, each corresponding to an episode on radio. The book is great for leisurely, but very informative reading. A definite advantage that the book has over the radio episodes is that it shows each of the 100 objects in full colour.

The book is highly recommended for any reader who is interested in understanding the development of mankind. It provides clear and useful background for reflecting on how we have come to where we are -- when and how we have progressed, as well as when and how often we have regressed.

I read a Kindle version, which allows me to magnify photographs to look closely at the 100 objects. My only complaint is that, with Kindle, it has been rather more cumbersome for me to refer back to the page with the photographs in each chapter while I was cruising through.

Clear Some Space In Your Mind

I believe I learned more per page reading this book than any I've ever read. A tour through all of history using objects collected (stolen?) by the British Museum, this book is a bravura execution of material culture and archaeological studies. In fact, I used several entries with my Advanced Placement Literature class in order to expose them to effective and interesting "close reading." MacGregor does with objects what literary critics do with a passage of poetry: he describes the object (lovely pictures ARE included), he gives a fascinating context of the period in which this object was used, and finally, provides an analysis of what the object "says" about the people, nation, and region that used or owned it. I find this method of historical explication incredibly engaging. Rather than begin with abstract concepts like democracy, Federalism, or ethnic cleansing, MacGregor begins with the concrete--a vase, a coin, a flower pot-- and says here's what this culture produced, here's what that says about them. This also dovetails nicely with what I teach in class regarding advertising; that we can come to understand the ideals of a nation by studying its advertisements. Interestingly, the objects MacGregor chooses also function as "advertisements" for their respective milieus. A testament to how well this book is written and constructed is that I read it incredibly quickly. Before I knew it, I was on object 56 at the 300 something page mark and I had no mental fatigue. The fact that the book is organized in 100 3 to 4 pages "chapters" helps a lot because I found myself reading a few objects here and there whenever I had some spare time. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has even a fleeting interest in archaeology or cultural materialism; your efforts, and the rather hefty price of the book will be worth it.

A Q&A with Go Like Hell author A.J. Baime

Question: What are you saying in your book that hasn't been said before?

Answer: No one has ever successfully written a book about cars and racing that can be easily enjoyed by someone who doesn't know a thing about cars and racing. My book accomplishes this. At the same time, reviewers who have studied this automotive era for decades have read the book and told me they were shocked to learn many things they didn't know. Specifically, no one has ever written about this story with such a focus on the business side: why it happened in the first place, how Henry Ford II had a vision to create the first pan-European auto company in the 1960s, selling Ford cars from London to the border of Russia. How could he prove that his American cars were the best in the world and that Europeans should buy them? By winning Le Mans. There's a whole foundation to this story that I've never seen fully explored elsewhere.

Q: How did you do your research?

A: For starters, I did dozens of interviews: Carroll Shelby, Lee Iacocca, Phil Hill, Mario Andretti, A. J. Foyt, Dan Gurney, John Surtees, Edsel Ford II (son of Henry Ford II), Piero Ferrari (son of Enzo Ferrari), Lloyd Ruby, plus engineers, mechanics, PR men, executives, and on and on. I conducted interviews in Italy, France, England, Los Angeles, and Florida, plus countless others over the phone from my office in New York. On top of the interviews, I read everything ever written on the subject, and I saw every bit of footage, which was a particularly good source for dialogue. In some cases, I took fast cars onto racetracks, such as Daytona and Ford's Romeo test facility north of Detroit, to try to get further into the heads of the drivers during scenes that take place at these locales.

Q: Any highlights during your research?

A: My interview with Carroll Shelby. Afterward, he drove me from his office in Gardena, California, to the Long Beach airport. The guy was getting on in years, and his vision was fading. But we were passing car after car on I-405 in a Mustang GT-H, which has ridiculous amounts of horsepower. We're talking about a guy who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans wearing chicken farmer overalls in 1959. Nearly fifty years later, he can't see much, but he can still drive.

Q: Why is this topical now?

A: What's happening in the American auto industry today is just stunning. My book is in large part about Detroit at the dawn of globalism. It's kind of like the first chapter in a long narrative that is now reaching its climax. In the 1960s, when the global car sales race began, Detroit was battling against German, British, and Japanese companies for the first time. Ford sold cars by proving on the racetrack they were better than anyone else's. We won in heroic fashion in the 1960s. We’re not winning anymore

Exceptional Exploration of the Competition between Ford and Ferrari to Win Le Mans

A.J. Baime has written a fascinating and involving book about European race car life in the 1960's, some might offer the Golden Age of the sport, driven by the competition between Ford and Ferrari. AJB is a very solid writer and his prose is compelling and his research deep. In particular he delves into the two personalities that drove (no pun intended) the competition: Henry Ford the second, grandson of The Henry Ford and Ferrari himself, the creator of the most dynamic of European sports cars then and now. The story is more than just theirs, it is heavily shaped by many others ranging from the steel-nerved drivers of the day to the cadre of engineers and builders of the cars. Some of the characters are well fleshed out and re-occur throughout the story, such as Carrol Shelby. There are a few times when the mob of car designers, builders and racing stalwarts can get a little confusing. In addition there were some of the races that AJB glossed over. A few of the races in which he dug into were some of the more exciting passages of the book. I certainly understand why he didn't want to write hundreds of pages regurgitating car positions etc. but a few of the races he didn't explore other than share the results. It seemed the book was just a little lighter in this area than it should have been. With that flaw aside, it is a well written book and brings to life a time of sport and dynamic competition that I found fascinating. My guess is that you will find it invigorating as well.

Worth a buy

Go Like Hell isn't quite what I was expecting, but it is certainly worth owning if you're any kind of gearhead.

Pros:
-Does a great job telling the overall story surrounding Ford's winning years at LeMans, particularly 1965 and the big win in '66. The writer is advertised on the jacket as being associated with Playboy, and that's the sort of writing you should expect.
-Lost of human interest stories. The book focuses mainly on the people involved, and their businesses, rather than getting overly deep into mechanical aspects. You'll learn a lot about the people involved, from Ford executives, to drivers, to Mr. Ferrari himself.
-Lots of very well-sourced quotes and factoids from a massive list of interviews. The book contains a bibliography and index which sum to a larger size than most chapters in the book. The level of research is really quite astonishing, and that's lovely to see for such an important historical work.

Cons:
-Lack of mechanical detail. Considering the Ford GT40mk.II will be considered by any gearhead to be the "real" hero of this story, you'd expect quite a bit more detail into its interior workings and development. While you do get a good general overview of the parts involved- particularly the massive engine- this isn't near the technical manual I would have liked it to be. A good example is that the book goes into the Ford "J-Car" program, which implemented a variety of experimental mechanical designs- none of which are even mentioned when discussing the car. I'll avoid spoilers, but anyone familiar with the story will know there are critical reasons why the new parts on the J-Car must be mentioned in any discussion of its history.
-Feels a bit "broad" for a car book. Related to the point about the mechanical detail, the overall tone of the book seems to focus mostly on the people and the broad forces involved. Again, this is perfectly in line for a writer of Playboy, or perhaps think Salon. There's sufficient detail to get your car passion going, but you're probably going to want to get on Wikipedia for some of the finer details to really quench your thirst.

Any true fan is going to wish this book came with a Popular Mechanics style cutaway blueprint of the Mk.II, and the fact that it doesn't have that level of mechanical detail is my only gripe. The human interest stories are top-notch. You'll climb inside the heads of Ferrari, Ford II, Iacocca, Shelby, and a host of drivers- and there's a long list of sources for further reading. Definitely pick this one up.

Why aren't there ten stars?

For people addicted to the car disease this is one super book. I thought I was pretty tuned in back when Hank Deuce decided to go for Ferrari's jugular. But this book revealed all kinds of stuff I missed-- big and little. Big stuff, like the fact that Enzo Ferrari had an illegitimate son. Little stuff like Bruce McClaren having one leg shorter than the other. Also a detailed description of Carroll Shelby's Cobra and Mustang GT350 operation at Los Angeles airport. And a lot of new info on Ken Miles-- one of my heroes because of his MG Specials. And so much more. I worked for an ad agency on Wilshire Blvd. in L.A. in the mid-'60s and would drive my MG TC home to Redondo Beach on Pacific Coast Highway every night for two reasons: 1. To hear the car's neat exhaust sound in the tunnel under LAX's runway. 2. To drive past the parking lot for Shelby's operation to see row after row of finished Cobras and GT350s. And I would covet them! Big time! Please don't tell God. Weekends were spent at Riverside, Goleta, Laguna Seca and other tracks watching names in this book race. I didn't give Mr. Baime's book Arsenal of Democracy" a very good review because, unlike this Ford/Ferrari book, I didn't really learn anything new. Maybe that's because I've read a lot about Ford in the last 60 years. But Go Like Hell is really one helluva book so go like hell to order it.
