Decades long allergies & headaches GONE! Review (with updates):
By Me
My boyfriend, age 47, had horrible allergies for 15 years, and headaches since childhood. Sinusitis, too. Pills, nasal sprays, antibiotics, you name it, he tried it. He had headaches almost every day and ate excedrin migraine tablets like they were going out of style. He regularly went to a specialist for his sinus problems. Nothing helped, and the last bout of antibiotics made him feel horrible. I got this book, and read the first couple chapters to him out loud. I looked him in the eye and said, "Hon, I don't think you have allergies. I don't think you have a headache problem, and I don't think you have sinus problems! I think you're dehydrated." He started the salt and water and has never looked back, no headaches, no sinus problems, no allergies. We rode almost 800 miles on his motorcycle over Memorial day 3 day weekend, it's late May and there was pollen gallore, NOTHING. NO allergies. He can breathe! He smells the air, and he sleeps at night with a clear nose, and NO MORE SNORING. Yep. People can knock Dr. Batman all they want. We're thrilled. And waiting to see what other changes we find in our bodies as the weeks progress. Fantastic. My boyfriend is no longer suffering as he goes about his work day and also can enjoy life more now. THANK YOU DR BATMAN, may you rest in peace.
Review & 5 month later update:
During the whole 5 months we've continued to do the Water Cure, this book worked wonders for us, because we had zero allergies, zero headaches, no more snoring, soft & much more healthy looking skin, supple joints as healthy and limber as in our teens (no more strange feelings in the joints when stretching or doing yoga) no more stiff necks, etc). Digestion is totally optimal. The water cure makes you beautiful, healthy and younger looking too! We love it!

UPDATE JULY 30, 2015 SECOND YEAR DOING "THE WATER CURE":
I'm providing my update, that the seasonal allergies my husband had for years never came back. He was fine all spring and now near summer's end, still fine - never takes any allergy meds at all. No sinus issues. No snoring. He still has no headaches. I never had any hay fever this year. I also got pregnant with our first child and making sure to drink plenty of water has been the best thing I could do, my pregnancy has been delightfully easy, I'm 30 weeks already, and have had none of the common issues women get, no constipation, no heartburn, no back pain, no skin problems, no morning sickness, no itchy skin on my belly, nothing - have felt great all through. While I can't guarantee it was the water, I believe it was.
PS - UPDATE SEPT 26 - I'm now 39 weeks pregnant, at the very tail end of the pregnancy and due any day now. NO problems. I'm 41 and never even had back pain. Nothing, we have enjoyed my easy, comfortable pregnancy! I made sure to drink my quota of water every day. The few times I didn't, due to some extreme circumstance preventing me, I didn't feel as great but a couple of glasses of water revived me. My husband notices that in the rare instance he doesn't drink much water, his head doesn't feel great and in ragweed season, his nose stuffs that day. SO he knows to get back to his water cure and voila! He feels fine again. I give lots of credit to The Water Cure for my blissfully easy pregnancy. I only wish people would believe us when we tell them how wonderful it is. They don't believe us, and they continue to complain about arthritis, and other niggling concerns. We stopped bothering to tell people about it. They believe in arthritis, allergies, etc. They can't believe it could possibly be a lack of water rather than a specific "disease". I get it. It was a lot for us to grasp too. Even after we saw it for ourselves, it was still extraordinary to find that sooo many of the common illnesses and ailments being suffered today are just water deficiencies, and all the crazy pills, treatments and stuff are irrelevant. Many problems can be fixed with a glass of water and a pinch of salt. Who knew?!

Fascinating!
By Candace Rushing
This book was very interesting-- I couldn't put it down. I had gone to his website many years ago, and started drinking more water after reading the information there. This book is so logical that you have to wonder why mainstream medicine totally ignores one of the most basic and fundamental necessities of life-- water!

One thing I absolutely swear by is water to relieve anxiety! He says that if you are even a little dehydrated, it will cause you to feel anxious. When I feel anxiety coming on, I immediately drink a couple of glasses of water, and pretty soon I notice it's gone. I think that's why road rage goes up in the summer-- dehydration from the heat makes people anxious and crabby. I've also learned that when I'm craving sweets, it usually means that I'm thirsty.

A tip I've learned to help me drink more: every time I take a drink from my water bottle, I count. Instead of mindlessly taking a sip and putting the lid back on, I consciously take 10 glugs (you can start with fewer and work up). I notice that counting makes a big difference in the amount of water I drink each day!

Immediate improvement for dry eyes!
By Carolyn C
This book makes a lot of sense! I had never considered myself dehydrated, but I recognized many symptoms. When I connected drying eyes and a need for salt and 8 oz. of water. I stopped drinking caffeine and started following Dr. B's protocol. I now carry Celtic sea salt and a measuring 1/8 teaspoon in a small baggie so that I can treat myself immediately. The first improvements are a more moist nose and an improvement in my sense of smell, which has been almost non-existent for years. I had some difficulty figuring out just what amount of salt per 8 ounces of water and the frequency and number of doses my body requires, but Dr. B gives clues to when one needs to back off.
I have no doubt more improvements will follow.

Able to pick up a number of useful things

Finkler et al: Financial Management for Public, Health, and Not-for-Profit Organizations

4th Edition

This was the book assigned to me for my class specifically for Nonprofit Financial Management as I pursue my MBA specifically for Nonprofit management.

As textbooks go, it is serviceable. The writing is clean and clear, and is easily understandable for someone that has some background in accounting. I am the Director of Finance at a nonprofit, and I was able to pick up a number of useful things from this, though a lot of it was review.

A couple of things bothered me a bit. There is a chapter about the time value of money (here it is chapter five). The book teaches the student how to approach the problems from a point where the unknowns are plugged into excel. This may just be me being old fashioned, but to me it skipped a step in being overly reliant on technology instead of going back one step and showing the derivation and making the student go through the motions to get an understanding of where excel is coming from. It’s not that it isn’t there - for example the derivation of finding the value of the annuity is footnoted, in small print. Again, a small concern, but one nevertheless.

A second thing is to look at the cost. Due to a mix up with the professor’s syllabus, I had first bought the third edition of this book, before being told that the fourth edition was the only acceptable one. The problem is that at the time, the third edition was less than half the price of the fourth edition. The kicker was I ended up with both of the editions side by side, and looking at the first three chapters I noticed no discernible difference. This may not be true in later chapters as I didn’t make the comparison. If you are assigning the text, have a look at the third edition for the student’s sake.

The price is a rip off.
By RPD
The book is very helpful and would be of great avail to anyone interested in learning practical tools of public and nonprofit financial management. However, after conducting the cost-benefit analysis I can't see how this book can be worth $200 (!!!), its an outright rip off. Pages are easily soiled and sticky, binding is really weak (after 1 day use I can see first page is already unglued). The authors did a great job improving this edition, but can't say the same about the publisher. This $200 book is not gona last long, I feel ripped off.

This is a valuable textbook. If you are considering buying the older version they are very similar. EXCEPT the problems at the back of each chapter are very different. 4 star because the book is too expensive.

The Point Is: Making Sense of Birth, Death, and Everything in Between, by Lee Eisenberg

In this engaging and provocative new book, Lee Eisenberg, bestselling author of The Number, dares to tackle nothing less than what it takes to find enduring meaning and purpose in life.
He explains how from a young age, each of us is compelled to take memories of events and relationships and shape them into a one-of-a-kind personal narrative. In addition to sharing his own pivotal memories (some of them moving, some just a shade embarrassing), Eisenberg presents striking research culled from psychology and neuroscience, and draws on insights from a pantheon of thinkers and great writers-Tolstoy, Freud, Joseph Campbell, Virginia Woolf, among others.
We also hear from men and women of all ages who are wrestling with the demands of work and family, ever in search of fulfillment and satisfaction.
It all adds up to a fascinating story, delightfully told, one that goes straight to the heart of how we explain ourselves to ourselves-in other words, who we are and why. Details and updates available at LeeEisenberg.com.

For a while, when someone asked about the book I was writing, I cut to the quick. "Oh, it's about the meaning of life." Reactions ranged from the dubious to the startlingly enthusiastic. "Oh, how timely!" I heard more than once, suggesting that the question of who we are and why we're here was poised to make a dramatic comeback. Eventually, I stopped using the phrase. The meaning of life? Who died and made me Kierkegaard? In truth, The Point Is was never meant to offer a universal answer to humankind's oldest riddle.
The idea was always more personal than that. It started when I began thinking back on my own life story, asking myself (again) the usual questions: How did I get to be me? And why? That led me to wonder why we give priority status to certain memories and not to others.  And how those select memories somehow congeal into what we come to think of as the "chapters" of our life. We all do that, don't we? Psychologists and neuroscientists say so: we build a story to explain ourselves to ourselves and to others.
From there, one thing led to another. I looked into what great thinkers and writers had to say about how our lives unfold: Joseph Campbell, Freud, Virginia Woolf, Joan Didion, they've all had at it.  Eventually, I arrived at a theory. It explains, to me anyway, why it sometimes feels that we're starring in a tragedy or a comedy. Others have told me it prompted them to think about their own life stories in a new way--which was good to hear, for that too was the point.

From the Inside Flap
There's a story you know like the back of your hand.
It's a captivating story, full of twists and turns, ups and downs. You know how the story begins and where it goes from there. You know who the characters are, major and minor. You know where the story stands at this very moment, even as you're reading these words.

The story in question is the story of your life:  the full account of your hopes and fears, victories and disappointments, love affairs won and lost. It includes every secret you swore you wouldn't divulge, also every dream you remember.  At various times it's been a coming-of-age story, a romance, a tragedy, even a wild adventure saga.  But above all, it remains an enduring mystery. Because there are a couple of key details missing, answers to questions we have been asking since the beginning of time: Who am I? and What's the point?

In this engaging and provocative new book, Lee Eisenberg, bestselling author of The Number, addresses these timeless questions in a thoroughly original way. He explains how, from a young age, each of us is compelled to take memories of events and relationships and shape them into a one-of-a-kind personal narrative. While sharing his own pivotal memories, Eisenberg presents striking research culled from psychology and neuroscience, and draws on insights from a pantheon of thinkers -- Joseph Campbell, Tolstoy, Freud, among others. It adds up to a fascinating tale of its own, delightfully told.

while at the same time laugh out loud funny, zany
By James Weil
I've been involved in the field of aging for over 30 years.
This book is a profoundly serious and insightful discussion of the life course, while at the same time laugh out loud funny, zany, whimsical and silly.
I can't recommend the book highly enough.

Look at these POINTS
By Patricia M. Harper
The type of book that not only gets you thinking, it helps you look at your life by writing down your earliest memories, your middle years and your issues about death. The author allows his sense of humor shine through even though the subject matter is very serious. The surveys at the end of the book, gives you ideas about really being you, your life and your fears of death. I'd recommend it to anyone that wants to get a better idea of why we were born, lived and died.

One of those special reads that stay with you
By Pamela A. McLaughlin
This book touched me in the deepest of ways. The insight was unique and the humor endearing. For me, just coming off of writing a personal memoir, I was able to relate so many of his concepts to what I went through when writing about my life. Many passages confirmed what I found when looking back, clarifying why I felt about certain memories. The author was very brave to even try to tackle "what the point is"; I must say he did about as good a job as a human can ... and he did it with grace, humor, wonderful quotes from various sources, and a kindness of heart that is clearly demonstrated by his personal anecdotes. I loved the book. I devoured it and knew after turning the last page that this book was one of those special books that I would be storing on my bookshelf to be read a second time at a later date.

The Master's Plan for the Church, by John F. MacArthur Jr.

It is absolutely essential that a church perceive itself as an institution for the glory of God, and to do that—claims John MacArthur—the local church must adhere unfalteringly to biblical leadership principles.

Christ never intended church leadership to be earned by seniority, purchased with money, or inherited through family ties. He never compared church leaders to governing monarchs, but rather to humble shepherds; not to slick celebrities, but to laboring servants.

Drawing from some of the best-received material on church leadership, this updated edition guides the church with crucial, effective lessons in leadership. This book is valuable not only for pastors and elders, but for anyone else who wants the church to be what God intended it to be.

John MacArthur is on the cutting edge of church leadership and church development. He not only knows this critical area biblically but pragmatically as well, since his own church models the principles in this book.
-Dr. Tony Evans, pastor and author

The book The Master’s Plan for the Church is indeed a masterwork. Like other works by John MacArthur, it shows solid biblical scholarship and practical application.
-Dr. Adrian Rogers, pastor, Bellview Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee

John MacArthur has done church leaders a great service. His new edition of The Master’s Plan for the Church is the thorough, biblically-based book we are used to finding when we read MacArthur. I commend it to church leaders everywhere.

Recommended for leaders and future leaders
By In Process
This was a very helpful book. I consider this book more as a manual on ministry to be referred to again and again. This is not a book that you read once, say "I got it", and never pick up gain. I highly recommend it for leaders and future leaders of churches so as to pattern ministry after the Bible, rather than the shifting sand of culture's preferences.

The introductory title says it all "Shepherds and Construction Workers." Right from the start, MacArthur sets his paradigm against the popular opinion of what church leaders should be doing. Church leadership is not management and is not glamorous. Rather, it is spiritual ministry (Jn 13:3-17) and spiritual construction with God to build the church (1 Cor 3:9-11).

This book is divided up into 3 parts not including the appendix.
Part 1. The Anatomy of a Church: MacArthur walks through the scriptural analogy of the Church being Christ's body with Himself as the Head (Col 2:19, Col 1:18).
a. The skeletal structure. The "skeletal" structure of the church is the critical components to being a church; if it yields, it is no longer a church: A high view of God, absolute authority of scripture, sound doctrine, personal holiness, and spiritual authority.
b. The internal systems. The spiritual attitudes necessary for church vitality: Obedience (he writes, "the all-pervasive attitude that makes all other attitudes possible"), humility, love, unity, willingness to serve, joy, peace, thankfulness, self discipline, accountability, forgiveness, dependence, flexibility, desire for growth, faithfulness, and hope.
c. The muscles. That which enables the body to function: Preaching and teaching, evangelism and missions, worship, prayer, discipleship, shepherding, building up families, training, giving, and fellowship.
d. The Head. The most important part. The Head of the church is the Lord Jesus Christ. Without Him we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Then, he points to Christ the Head as Savior, Shepherd, Sovereign, and Sanctifier.

Part 2: The Dynamic Church
a. The Pattern of the early church. He discusses the founding of the church, the ministry of the church, and the leadership of the church.
b. Elders, deacons, and other church members.
c. The Thessalonian model. A surrendered, soul-winning, second coming, steadfast, and submissive church.
d. The Marks of an Effective church: Godly leaders, discipleship, an emphasis on penetrating the community, active church members, concern for one another, devotion to the family, bible teaching and preaching, willingness to change, great faith, sacrifice, and worship.
e. The calling of the church: Called BEFORE: Election, Called OUT: Redemption, Called TO: Sanctification, Called TO: Identification, Called UNDER: Revelation, Called WITH: Unification, Called UNTO: Glorification, and Called FOR: proclamation.
f. The Lord's work in the Lord's way: vision for the future, sense of flexibility, commitment to thoroughness, commitment to present service, acceptance of opposition as a challenge, a team spirit, and a sensitivity to the Spirit's leading in others.

Part 3: Qualities of an Excellent Servant
a. Understanding the seducing spirit
b. Understanding the duties of ministry
c. Shepherding the flock of God

The book also has a huge appendix of 150 pages. It answers:
1. Answering the Key Questions about Elders
2. Answering the Key Questions about Deacons
3. Qualifications for Spiritual Leadership
4. Elements of Church Discipline
5. Restoring a Sinning Brother or Sister
6. Should Fallen Leaders be Restored?
7. The Danger of False Teaching
8. Why I still Preach the Bible
9. Why Personal Integrity is Crucial for the Church
10. Why I love the Church
11. Why Doctrine is practical

Build Your Church According to Scripture
By Randy Given
Although the "Master's Plan for the Church" (MPftC) came out before "Ashamed of the Gospel" (AotG), I recommend reading AotG before MPftC. AotG presents a broader base for what problems exist (e.g., watering down the gospel) and why they exist. MPftC is more of a practical application -- now that AotG has shown what to avoid, MPftC shows a better way to implement things in your church. Our denomination (CRC - Christian Reformed Church) has most of those things in place and does a pretty good job of staying true to how a church should be run. MPftC helps keep our minds in line with doing the right things and not just things because "we've always done it that way". Most of the chapters and appendixes are taken from sermons at the author's church. The format is easy to read and well organized. The appendixes fill the final one-third of the book and are required reading. I recommend getting both books for your church library (we have AotG and probably will get MPftC soon).

If you call yourself a CRM consultant, you've gotta read this
By Michael Boysen
As a "CRM" consultant, it's been hard enough trying to bridge the gap between "CRM software" and what CRM really is. Paul explained the differences (operationally) in his first three editions (I read 1 and 3). While CRM successes have been on the rise, I've seen little change in the markets I work in. Do they fail? No. Do they exceed beyond everyone's wildest expectations? Absolutely not.

We have this problem, as people, that we want things the way we want them. Many businesses want software that solves their problems. Many customers now want businesses to change the way they are engaged. Can you see the problem? No? Then as a business owner, you really owe it to yourself to read this book because it will open your eyes. You'll start looking at your teenager's behaviors and realize that you're not selling to Barney Fife anymore.

And as for you CRM consultants (full disclosure, I'm one of them) you will see how much value you leave on the table each and every day you build a practice around "fields and screens". Yes, software is the answer -- to how to support processes that engage customers in totally new ways. CRM at the Speed of Light 4th Edition will paint a clear picture of the changes we face as business leaders and as consultants who hope to make our businesses, or our clients, more competitive in the loyalty game.

I didn't think I would see ways to bring Social CRM into the middle market arena. But now I see how the social customer is going to demand it. Maybe not tomorrow...but certainly by next week.

At first, regret, then delight!
By Paula Crawford
I must admit, when the book arrived I had a sinking feeling...650 pages or so on top of all of the other stuff I have to read. But the book is a sheer delight and I find myself rushing back to read more. It's also chock a block full of incredibly useful and interesting information.

Social CRM is primarily about listening to the voice of the customer and bringing it deep within the organisation to inform and scuplt strategy. It focuses on customer engagement and building end-to-end customer experiences that delight and build loyalty. Social media is just one part of a much bigger picture in understanding and communicating with the customer. The old rules of CRM still apply, but social CRM adds a further dimension (probably the most important) to a key business process that can impact ultimately whether a company succeeds or fails.

Paul Greenberg is a very entertaining writer and I found myself agreeing, nodding, calling to mind examples in my own life and business and at times, laughing out loud. This is a great book and I wish I'd known about it sooner. It's filled with tons of really good stuff, and the writer builds argument upon argument illustrated with lots of relevant examples and input from industry experts. It's weighty but punctuated with lightheartedness. I especially love his use of the English language with full sentences comprising of "Gulp." and "BUT."

To my mind, this book is for every business, big or small. Greenberg is a phenomenal teacher and is generous with his knowledge. A revolution is underway for sure and the winners will include Greenberg's thinking in their strategy.

I was just a little disappointed that there wasn't a reference section, but then realized that the information had been built on a breath-taking array of sources - social conversations, blogs, wikis, industry contacts, phone intervews...the list goes on and on as well as the traditional stuff - academic papers etc. It would have required another tome.

Not only is 650 pages too short - I can't wait for his next book, I know, I know, you said it before, Paul, no more CRM books. Ah go on!

Must Read!
By txguitarman
Our Lean Manager suggested this as a resource for getting an in depth knowledge of CRM. It is that and more! It is entertaining and thought provoking along with providing multiple resources to continue the journey. I can tell that I will be returning to this and rereading several of the chapters over again.
Even though this was printed several years ago, I feel most of the content is still relevant.

Yes.
By matt evon
One of my all time favorite series, only hindered by its teen audience. I felt this book series could have truly become a cult classic if written from a slightly darker more adult and mature side.

The message of the entire series is just phenomonal. An example of the human spirit at its finest.

The author does a great job of giving you more questions than answers in the first 9 books, keeping you hooked.

Dropping the bomb on book 10. All answers answered, all loose ends tied, everything resolved. The perfect ending. The last chapter of book 10 had me almost in tears of joy it was so fitting and so perfect.

You become so attached to the characters by the end of the book it's hard to let them go when you stop reading; yet still feel their presence in yourself. In halla.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading, period.

As long as you can get over the fact it's written for teens, and try to put it into a more mature perspective yourself, it will be one of your favorites for sure.

Now comon hollywood I want to see this turn into a movie, and I want it to be amazing!

Nice set, arrived well, story is okay
By Peter H. Smith
My eleven year old son had the first book and asked for the second as a Christmas gift. Buying the set and having two first books was more economical than buying individual paperbacks.

The story and writing are pretty good and my 11-year-old and 13-year-old sons enjoyed them.

This is a modern actioner and, for an actioner, is well but not superbly constructed. The vocabulary is approachable for young readers. The plot keeps your attention and stimulates imagination. There isn't a lot of imagery and the prose is modern with restricted vocabulary. This is a negative for mature readers but not for an elementary school reader. The characters are pre-teens to young teens who interact with adults who are mentors. The villain is an adult.

McHale narrates characters' thoughts about their feelings and their questions about ethics and motives. These narratives build in complexity over the series. This helps younger readers to improve introspection skills by seeing examples of teenage "self-talk." The narratives seem approachable by readers who are still concrete thinkers. Exposing young readers to exploration of more abstract moral concepts in this fashion is brilliant.

As an adult, I was interested enough to read all the books without setting them aside. I rated it less than five stars because I like more imagery and vocabulary and personally don't like modern actioners. I rated it more than three stars because my sons did not stop reading before the end. My eleven year old would probably give it a 5.

Doctor Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak

Boris Pasternak’s widely acclaimed novel comes gloriously to life in a magnificent new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, the award-winning translators of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and to whom, The New York Review of Books declared, “the English-speaking world is indebted.”

First published in Italy in 1957 amid international controversy—the novel was banned in the Soviet Union until 1988, and Pasternak declined the Nobel Prize a year later under intense pressure from Soviet authorities—Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet-physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago’s love for the tender and beautiful Lara: pursued, found, and lost again, Lara is the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times.

Stunningly rendered in the spirit of Pasternak’s original—resurrecting his style, rhythms, voicings, and tone—and including an introduction, textual annotations, and a translators’ note, this edition of Doctor Zhivago is destined to become the definitive English translation of our time.

Review
"The previous English-language translation of Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago was made and brought out in England and the U.S. in extreme haste, on the eve of the 1958 Nobel Prize award to its author that triggered one of the fiercest political storms of the Cold War era. This new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky is for the first time based on the authentic original text, reflects the present, deeper level of understanding of the great masterpiece of 20th century Russian literature and conveys its whole artistic richness with all its complexities and subtleties that had escaped the attention of the earlier translators and readers.

"In faithfulness to the original, attention to stylistic details and nuances, lucidity, and brilliance it matches Pevear and Volokhonsky’s superb translations of such monumental works of the classics of Russian literature as Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. The new edition will have an even more profound effect on our understanding of 20th century Russia that the first appearance of the novel had more than half a century ago."
—Lazar Fleishman, Professor of Russian Literature, Stanford University

“Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have once again provided an outstanding translation of a major Russian novel. They capture Pasternak’s ‘voice’ with great skill. Thanks to their sensitive rendering, those reading Doctor Zhivago in English can now get a far better sense of Pasternak’s style, for they have produced an English text that conveys the nuances (along with the occasional idiosyncrasies) of Pasternak’s writing. Notably as well, their version includes some phrases and sentences that inexplicably were omitted by the original translators. The text is accompanied by useful (but not overwhelming) notes in the back that provide information about many historical and cultural references that would otherwise be obscure for those coming to the novel for the first time. Without a doubt, their version will become the standard translation of the novel for years to come.”
—Barry Scherr, Mandel Family Professor of Russian, Dartmouth College

The Five O'Clock Express

1

They walked and walked and sang "Memory Eternal,"1 and when they stopped, it seemed that the song went on being repeated by their feet, the horses, the gusts of wind.

Passers-by made way for the cortège, counted the wreaths, crossed themselves.  The curious joined the procession, asked:  "Who's being buried?"  "Zhivago," came the answer.  "So that's it.  Now I see."  "Not him.  Her."  "It's all the same.  God rest her soul.  A rich funeral."

The last minutes flashed by, numbered, irrevocable.  "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof; the world, and those that dwell therein."  The priest, tracing a cross, threw a handful of earth onto Marya Nikolaevna.  They sang "With the souls of the righteous."  A terrible bustle began.  The coffin was closed, nailed shut, lowered in.  A rain of clods drummed down as four shovels hastily filled the grave.  Over it a small mound rose.  A ten-year-old boy climbed onto it.

Only in the state of torpor and insensibility that usually comes at the end of a big funeral could it have seemed that the boy wanted to speak over his mother's grave.

He raised his head and looked around from that height at the autumn wastes and the domes of the monastery with an absent gaze.  His snub-nosed face became distorted.  His neck stretched out.  If a wolf cub had raised his head with such a movement, it would have been clear that he was about to howl.  Covering his face with his hands, the boy burst into sobs.  A cloud flying towards him began to lash his hands and face with the wet whips of a cold downpour.  A man in black, with narrow, tight-fitting, gathered sleeves, approached the grave.  This was the deceased woman's brother and the weeping boy's uncle, Nikolai Nikolaevich Vedenyapin, a priest defrocked at his own request.  He went up to the boy and led him out of the cemetery.

2

They spent the night in one of the monastery guest rooms, allotted to the uncle as an old acquaintance.  It was the eve of the Protection.2  The next day he and his uncle were to go far to the south, to one of the provincial capitals on the Volga, where Father Nikolai worked for a publisher who brought out a local progressive newspaper.  The train tickets had been bought, the luggage was tied up and standing in the cell.  From the nearby station the wind carried the plaintive whistling of engines maneuvering in the distance.

Towards evening it turned very cold.  The two ground-floor windows gave onto the corner of an unsightly kitchen garden surrounded by yellow acacia bushes, onto the frozen puddles of the road going past, and onto the end of the cemetery where Marya Nikolaevna had been buried that afternoon.  The kitchen garden was empty, except for a few moiré patches of cabbage, blue from the cold.  When the wind gusted, the leafless acacia bushes thrashed about as if possessed and flattened themselves to the road.

During the night Yura was awakened by a tapping at the window.  The dark cell was supernaturally lit up by a fluttering white light.  In just his nightshirt, Yura ran to the window and pressed his face to the cold glass.

Beyond the window there was no road, no cemetery, no kitchen garden.  A blizzard was raging outside, the air was smoky with snow.  One might have thought the storm noticed Yura and, knowing how frightening it was, reveled in the impression it made on him.  It whistled and howled and tried in every way possible to attract Yura's attention.  From the sky endless skeins of white cloth, turn after turn, fell on the earth, covering it in a winding sheet.   The blizzard was alone in the world, nothing rivalled it.

Yura's first impulse, when he got down from the windowsill, was to get dressed and run outside to start doing something.  He was afraid now that the monastery cabbage would be buried and never dug out, now that mama would be snowed under and would be helpless to resist going still deeper and further away from him into the ground.

Again it ended in tears.  His uncle woke up, spoke to him of Christ and comforted him, then yawned, went to the window, and fell to thinking.  They began to dress.  It was getting light.

3

While his mother was alive, Yura did not know that his father had abandoned them long ago, had gone around various towns in Siberia and abroad, carousing and debauching, and that he had long ago squandered and thrown to the winds the millions of their fortune.  Yura was always told that he was in Petersburg or at some fair, most often the one in Irbit.

But then his mother, who had always been sickly, turned out to have consumption.  She began going for treatment to the south of France or to northern Italy, where Yura twice accompanied her.  Thus, in disorder and amidst perpetual riddles, Yura spent his childhood, often in the hands of strangers, who changed all the time.  He became used to these changes, and in such eternally incoherent circumstances his father's absence did not surprise him.

As a little boy, he had still caught that time when the name he bore was applied to a host of different things.  There was the Zhivago factory, the Zhivago bank, the Zhivago buildings, a way of tying and pinning a necktie with a Zhivago tie-pin, and even some sweet, round-shaped cake, a sort of baba au rhum, called a Zhivago, and at one time in Moscow you could shout to a cabby:  "To Zhivago!" just like "To the devil's backyard!" and he would carry you off in his sleigh to a fairy-tale kingdom.  A quiet park surrounded you.  Crows landed on the hanging fir branches, shaking down hoarfrost.  Their cawing carried, loud as the crack of a tree limb.  From the new buildings beyond the clearing, pure-bred dogs came running across the road.  Lights were lit there.  Evening was falling.

Suddenly it all flew to pieces.  They were poor.

4

In the summer of 1903, Yura and his uncle were riding in a tarantass and pair over the fields to Duplyanka, the estate of Kologrivov, the silk manufacturer and great patron of the arts, to see Ivan Ivanovich Voskoboinikov, a pedagogue and popularizer of useful knowledge.

It was the feast of the Kazan Mother of God,3 the thick of the wheat harvest.  Either because it was lunchtime or on account of the feast day, there was not a soul in the fields.  The sun scorched the partly reaped strips like the half-shaven napes of prisoners.  Birds circled over the fields.  Its ears drooping, the wheat drew itself up straight in the total stillness or stood in shocks far off the road, where, if you stared long enough, it acquired the look of moving figures, as if land surveyors were walking along the edge of the horizon and taking notes.

"And these," Nikolai Nikolaevich asked Pavel, a handyman and watchman at the publishing house, who was sitting sideways on the box, stooping and crossing his legs, as a sign that he was not a regular coachman and driving was not his calling, "are these the landowner's or the peasants'?"

"Them's the master's," Pavel replied, lighting up, "and them there," having lighted up and inhaled, he jabbed with the butt of the whip handle towards the other side and said after a long pause, "them there's ours.  Gone to sleep, eh?" he scolded the horses every so often, glancing at their tails and rumps out of the corner of his eye, like an engineer watching a pressure gauge.

But the horses pulled like all horses in the world; that is, the shaft horse ran with the innate directness of an artless nature, while the outrunner seemed to the uncomprehending to be an arrant idler, who only knew how to arch its neck like a swan and do a squatting dance to the jingling of the harness bells, which its own leaps set going.

Nikolai Nikolaevich was bringing Voskoboinikov the proofs of his little book on the land question, which, in view of increased pressure from the censorship, the publisher had asked him to revise.

"Folk are acting up in the district," said Nikolai Nikolaevich.  "In the Pankovo area they cut a merchant's throat and a zemstvo man4 had his stud burned down.  What do you think of that?  What are they saying in your village?"

But it turned out that Pavel took an even darker view of things than the censor who was restraining Voskoboinikov's agrarian passions.

"What're they saying?  Folk got free and easy.  Spoiled, they say.  Can you do that with our kind?  Give our muzhiks the head, they'll crush each other, it's God's truth.  Gone to sleep, eh?"

This was the uncle and nephew's second trip to Duplyanka. Yura thought he remembered the way, and each time the fields spread out wide, with woods embracing them in front and behind in a narrow border, it seemed to Yura that he recognized the place where the road should turn right, and at the turn there would appear and after a moment vanish the seven-mile panorama of Kologrivovo, with the river glistening in the distance and the railroad running beyond it.  But he kept being mistaken.  Fields were succeeded by fields.  Again and again they were embraced by woods.  The succession of these open spaces was tuned to a vast scale.  You wanted to dream and think about the future.

Not one of the books that were later to make Nikolai Nikolaevich famous had yet been written.  But his thoughts were already defined.  He did not know how near his hour was.

Soon he was to appear among the representatives of the literature of that time, university professors and philosophers of the revolution – this man who had thought over all their themes and who, apart from terminology, had nothing in common with them.  The whole crowd of them held to some sort of dogma and contented themselves with words and appearances, but Father Nikolai was a priest who had gone through Tolstoyism and revolution5 and kept going further all the time.  He thirsted for a wingedly material thought, which would trace a distinct, unhypocritical path in its movement and would change something in the world for the better, and which would be noticeable even to a child or an ignoramus, like a flash of lightning or a roll of thunder.  He thirsted for the new.

Yura felt good with his uncle.  He resembled his mother.  He was a free spirit, as she had been, with no prejudice against anything inhabitual.  Like her, he had an aristocratic feeling of equality with all that lived.  He understood everything at first glance, just as she had, and was able to express his thoughts in the form in which they came to him at the first moment, while they were alive and had not lost their meaning.

Yura was glad that his uncle was taking him to Duplyanka.  It was very beautiful there, and the picturesqueness of the place also reminded him of his mother, who had loved nature and had often taken him on walks with her.  Besides that, Yura was pleased that he would again meet Nika Dudorov, a high-school boy who lived at Voskoboinikov's and probably despised him for being two years younger, and who, when greeting him, pulled his hand down hard and bowed his head so low that the hair fell over his forehead, covering half his face.

In Praise of Boris Pasternak and Doctor Zhivago
By Paul Frandano
Just a few words, on the outside chance that I might tip a potential reader or two into reading this marvelous oh-so-Russian novel of lives caught up in the Great October Revolution of 1917 and its aftermath. Either you read Big Russian Novels (primarily of the 19th century) or not. If you do, you've probably already read, or tried to read, Zhivago. If you don't, I can offer a few reasons why you might want to read this one, in the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation or the earlier, less literal (but reportedly more graceful and poetic) Hayward-Harari version. Pasternak's cast of principal characters are to a person layered, complex, deeply conceived individuals swept up in the massive surge of events, struggling to keep their heads above water while, all around them, friends, family, and nameless millions of others are drowning in the turbulence. The arc of Yuri Zhivago alone - from enthusiastic, humanistic supporter of "regime change" to mordant skeptic of divisive ideas imposed as orthodoxy-driven policy - is typical of the evolutions and surprises Pasternak has written into the novel. His characters ruminate far and wide over imputed glories and horrors of Marxism, Bolshevism, Soviet Communism, the New Economic Policy (NEP), etc., and it was for precisely these candid criticisms of Soviet ideology and practice that Pasternak's novel was condemned (although unpublished) in the USSR - despite the deStalinization still underway at the time of Zhivago's publication, first in Italy then around the world (Soviet readers couldn't legally purchase a USSR/Russian edition until 1988). Needless to say, Pasternak was obliged to decline the Nobel Prize for Literature he won in 1958, mostly for Doctor Zhivago.

For me - I spent most of my adult life as an analyst of foreign political, economic, social, and military affairs - Doctor Zhivago is particularly brilliant in its depiction of the horrors and dislocations war and civil war inflict on populations, and especially those segments with little or no recourse to "safety nets" of  any variety - personal, familial, governmental, church-, religion-, or community-based, or other. Pasternak depicts the range of human ingenuity in such circumstances, as individiuals cobble together the means of extracting brief moments of small pleasure from the tractor-pull of events. But through an accumulation of hundreds of small details, often in asides and parenthetic observations, Pasternak conveys the epochal common misfortunes and hardships of those whose accident of history made them Russians born around and after 1900. The novel compels us to consider that, at some point in the 20th century, such horrors of remorseless privation, despotism, and brutal inhumanity were visited upon the majority of humanity - the Europe of the World  Wars, China for most of the century, and on and on - and how  fortunate those spared such travails (and their descendents) are.

Throughout, Pasternak's characters comment on the flow of events, the political struggles, the conduct of, first, the World War and later the Civil War, the states-of-play at various key junctures, the putative winners and losers, the impositions of what must seem arbitrary policy (and then policy reversals), all in the name of advancing to some  formless Communist Utopia but, to the  cynically incisive observations of Zhivago and other perceptive observers, simply a Soviet variation of high-stakes politics of power-seeking  individuals. THIS is how depotism and deprivation of freedom looks, and it's an experience alien to most American readers and one worthy of serious contemplation. Zhivago is filled with long, philosophical digressions that in general weigh humanism and spirituality against ideological politics; many found these passages tedious and a drag on the narrative. Suffice to say, I did not. Moreover, I found even Pevear-Volokhonsky's more literal translation filled with beautifully poetic moments, as were the translations of "Yuri Zhivago's poetry" that forms an appendix to the novel.

In short, I found Doctor Zhivago a transporting literary experience and a profound reflection on Soviet Communism. And a book I will reread, soon, in the Hayward-Harari translation.

The novel itself is great though and the prose translation quite good

This unidentifed translation of Doctor Zhivago with a cover picture from the American movie version has numerous format errors and some typos and does NOT include any of the poems. So the translation is incomplete. The novel itself is great though and the prose translation quite good, but don't bother with this bogus looking Amazon version.

Masterpiece
By Ronnie Tyler
I just finished Boris Pasternak’s novel, “Doctor Zhivago,” and I’m a bit wrecked. I had to lie down after finishing. This was a re-reading after too many years. It is one of my all-time favorites, so highest recommendation! I’d forgotten how excellent it is. I always enjoy a good nexus, and here the nexus is my love of history, especially the end of the Romanov Dynasty, Russian Revolution of 1917, and gorgeous writing. This translation is from 2014 and it is wonderful. Yes, the movie is sublime, but the book is even better. I want to run away to Siberia now. Forward my mail to Varykino.
