The Fifties, by David Halberstam

The Fifties is a sweeping social, political, economic, and cultural history of the ten years that Halberstam regards as seminal in determining what our nation is today. Halberstam offers portraits of not only the titans of the age: Eisenhower Dulles, Oppenheimer, MacArthur, Hoover, and Nixon, but also of Harley Earl, who put fins on cars; Dick and Mac McDonald and Ray Kroc, who mass-produced the American hamburger; Kemmons Wilson, who placed his Holiday Inns along the nation's roadsides; U-2 pilot Gary Francis Powers; Grace Metalious, who wrote Peyton Place; and "Goody" Pincus, who led the team that invented the Pill.

Amazon.com Review
"In retrospect," writes David Halberstam, "the pace of the fifties seemed slower, almost languid. Social ferment, however, was beginning just beneath this placid surface." He shows how the United States began to emerge from the long shadow of FDR's 12-year presidency, with the military-industrial complex and the Beat movement simultaneously growing strong. Television brought not only situation comedies but controversial congressional hearings into millions of living rooms. While Alfred Kinsey was studying people's sex lives, Gregory Pincus and other researchers began work on a pill that would forever alter the course of American reproductive practices. Halberstam takes on these social upheavals and more, charting a course that is as easy to navigate as it is wide-ranging.

From Library Journal
The Fifties were more than just a mid-point decade in a century; they were to be the crucible in which the rest of the 20th century was forged. Halberstam ( The Next Century , LJ 1/92) here touches every thread in the warp and woof of the national fabric. This is the true drama of history: President Truman's firing of General Douglas MacArthur, the Eisenhower years, Senator Joe McCarthy's red-baiting, the early U.S. involvement in Indochina, the H-bomb, the purging of atomic scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Supreme Court ordering the integration of schools, troops in Little Rock to enforce it, the Montgomery bus boycott, the rise of Martin Luther King, Russia's sputnik launch, and Castro's revolutionary Cuba. Halberstam also explores major social and cultural changes--the advent of national television, fast-food restaurants, the flight to the suburbs, huge cars with fins, the phenomenon of Elvis Presley, the contraceptive pill, and much more. A superb book; recommended for all libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/1/93.

From Kirkus Reviews
In The Best and the Brightest, The Powers That Be, and The Reckoning, Halberstam proved that he can master intimidating subjects with aplomb--and in this massive tome on a convulsive decade in American life, he meets with equal success. Such a sprawling panorama can't be depicted coherently without selective use of material, and some of Halberstam's omissions are open to question. While rightly lingering over McCarthyism and the development of the atomic bomb, he skims over Communism's advances in Eastern Europe and China in the late 40's, leaving an inadequate sense of why Americans yielded so readily to national-security hysteria during the period. Halberstam also fails to explain fully America's role in reviving the postwar economies of Japan and Western Europe. And why is there nothing on the advances that put air travel in reach of the average American? Nevertheless, Halberstam keeps his narrative tightly focused by concentrating on the era's human instruments of change, including some famous (Eisenhower, Elvis, Brando, Kerouac, Milton Berle, et al.) and others more obscure (Kemmons Wilson and Dick and Mac McDonald, founders of, respectively, Holiday Inn and McDonald's). In this often ``mean time'' of redbaiting, change still managed to burst out, with the invention of the Pill, the moves by Japan and Germany to undercut GM's preeminence in the auto industry, and the assault on legalized segregation. Halberstam finds at the heart of this decade of social, political, and economic innovation a deep split between an acceptance of change and a yearning for earlier and simpler times, and he examines thoroughly how TV altered various aspects of American life--its recreation habits, its advertising, and, inevitably, its politics, through the medium's coverage of the Little Rock crisis and the JFK-Nixon debates. Compulsively readable, with familiar events and people grown fresh in the telling. Chocked full of US history
By F. Moyer
The book is USA-focused rather than world-focused. At the start of this book, some of the topics covered include: Joseph McCarthy (Commies are everywhere); Harry Truman (plain spoken); Korean War (avoidable tragedy); Levitt Town (homes for the masses); McDonalds (fast food); rise of television (remember Milton Berle?). And the articles continue through to the end of the 50’s, with topics such as the space race (could we have launched the 1st satellite?), school integration in the south, Fidel Castro’s Cuban revolution, and the Kennedy/Nixon Presidential campaign.

The book probably resonates the most with older citizens. In my case, I was 5 in 1950 and 15 in 1960, so I was increasing aware of many of the events of this decade. But the book both reminded me of times past and provided me a perspective on that decade’s unfolding events that I was mostly too young to understand or appreciate at the time.

I recommend for all – but I think those who grew up during the 50’s will especially enjoy this book.

Some interesting things that happened in the 1950s
By T. F. Hurley
Much of the material covered in this book is quite interesting, ranging from domestic politics to foreign policy matters, big economic trends and cultural phenomena. But I disliked the organization which hopped pretty randomly among these big subject areas. Material on Elvis Presley might have immediately followed, without transition, material on Eisenhower's campaigns; material on Levittown and the suburbanization of America was interspersed with a story on one of the CIA's various covert intercessions in South America. Notably, the "jumping around" of subject matter also did not follow a timeline (e.g., 1950, 1951 . . . 1960), and probably could not, because many of the various subjects did not represent discrete events occurring at specific times.

The book also seemed to lack a major thesis--less an answer to the question "What were the 1950's in America all about?" than to a request to "Tell me some interesting things that happened in the 1950s?"

But. . . still interesting and a reasonably good read.

Incredibly Interesting, Informative and easy to read
By OLD1mIKE
The Fifties by David Halberstam

Incredibly interesting. Informative. Easy to read. Changing topics with each chapter makes the book less intimidating than the 800 page size implies. Recommended for anyone interested in History and especially for those capable of connecting the dots from the 50's to the 60's, to the 70's and beyond.

The fifties were a transitional decade. In previous decades, important cultural issues seem to stop at the end of each decade. The roaring twenties ended with the depression of the 30's. The depression ended at the 40's with WWII. But issues in the fifties were the seeds for issues dominating our culture for the next fifty years. The Cold War. Korea and the Vietnam conflicts. The development of the hydrogen bomb and intercontinental delivery systems. Brown vs the Board of Education, desegregation and Equal Rights, the sexual revolution and Feminist rights. The car industry grew from simple transportation to high power status symbols. With increased mobility, veterans moved to suburban communities like Levittown (envisioned and built by William Levitt) and entrepreneurs like Kemmons Wilson built Holiday Inn and created the modern motel industry. Ray Kroc took a small popular California resturant chain and essentially created the Fast Food industry. TV grew from a novelty gadget to being a central part of family entertainment, the most effective method to advertise, created the Consumer Society and became the most effective political tool since the soap box. Music went from parent approved, to Elvis Presley and Rock-in-Roll. Add Eisenhower, Kruschev, Nixon, John and Allen Dulles, Gen. Macarthur, McCarthy Hearings, Sputnik, U2 Spy Planes, CIA Covert Op's and a host of other topics and characters too numerous to mention. Not just a nostalgic journey. Halberstam adds insight to why society and politics changed. Along the way you realize how much has changed while so much stayed the same.

Outline of the book

The development of an information system (IS) - from its inception to the first release to stakeholders comprises three iterative and incremental phases: analysis, design, and implementation. This book describes the methods and techniques used in the first two phases. The implementation issues are only addressed to the extent to which they need to be considered in the design phase. Testing and change management are addressed in the final chapter.

The text concentrates on object-oriented software development. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used to capture modeling artifacts. Emphasis is placed on the development by elaboration where the same modeling language (UML) is used throughout the development lifecycle. Analysts, designers, and programmers 'speak' the same language, although perhaps use the dialects (profiles) of the language fitting their individual needs.

The early applications of object technology targeted graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and focused on the speed of developing new systems and the speed of program execution. In this book, I emphasize the application of object technology in IS development. The challenge is the large volume of data, complex data structures, shared access to information by many concurrent users, transaction processing, changing requirements, etc. The main advantage of object technology in IS environments is in facilitating software maintenance and scalability.

Developing information systems is synonymous with doing analysis and design 'in-the-large'. No IS project can succeed without following strict development processes and without understanding the underlying software architectures. The development is large-scale, object-oriented, iterative and incremental. The software architecture is based on a client/server solution, where the client is a workstation with GUI and the server stores a database. Client and server run in separate processes and communicate via object messaging. A server database can be relational, object-relational, or purely object-oriented.

The book proposes a detailed approach to analysis and design of information systems with UML. The book identifies ways to:

  • harness the complexity of large system models;
  • improve software architectures;
  • facilitate software readability, maintainability and scalability;
  • promote layered structuring of objects;
  • handle component integration;
  • improve modeling of collaboration between GUI and persistent database objects, etc.
  • Distinguishing features

This book has a number of features which, when combined, create a unique offering. The 'teach-by-example' approach is the cornerstone of the text. The main discussion is based on examples and a guided tutorial drawn from five application domains University Enrollment, Video Store, Contact Management, Telemarketing, and Online Shopping. The examples are independent. They build up into case studies that can be extended or diversified through questions formulated at the end of most chapters (Exercise Questions). Some exercises refer to a sixth application domain — Advertising Expenditure Measurement.

To facilitate self-education, the guided tutorial (Online Shopping) and the case studies are formulated using the question-and-answer principle. A separate section at the beginning of the book, 'Book Activity Diagrams' offers diagrams that link the question-and-answer steps used in the tutorial and in the case studies. The book activity diagrams can serve as an alternative table of contents for examples scattered in the text.

The book discusses principles, methods and techniques of good analysis and good design. Special attention is paid to the design phase. Design is not treated as a straightforward transformation from analysis. The book acknowledges the difficulties and intricacies of large-scale object-oriented client/server system development. In many ways, the book takes a fresh look at the 'design-in-the-large,' at iterative and incremental development of large systems, and at capabilities and limitations of tools and methods in large software production.

A unique character of the book comes from a balanced blend of practical explanation and theoretical insight. A major premise is to avoid unnecessary over-complication, but without the loss of rigor. The book 'speaks' from experience. Topics that are not relevant to industry or that are only of research interest have been excluded.

The book is on the 'cutting-edge' of information technology. It uses the latest standard in system modeling — UML. It addresses the latest developments in database technology, including object-relational databases. In this context, the Internet-driven shift from 'thick-clients' (i.e. large desktop computers) back to server-based computing is acknowledged. The analysis and design principles discussed in the text apply equally well to conventional client/server solutions and to modern component-based distributed applications.

Software development is not amenable to 'black-white,' 'true-false,' 'zero-one' solutions. Good software solutions come from good business analysts and system designers/programmers, not from blindly applied algorithms. A policy of the book is to warn the reader about potential difficulties that the advocated approach cannot entirely resolve. In consequence it is hoped that readers will apply their acquired knowledge with care and will not assume unrealistic expectations of the ease with which the approach can be applied (and thereby, possibly, fail more dramatically).

In summary, the distinguishing features of the book are:

  • The book relates the theories to reality — in the form of practical problems and limitations, which will have to be addressed when applying the approach 'in the field.'
  • The book gives special attention to the design phase. Design is not treated as a straightforward transformation from analysis and it acknowledges the difficulties and intricacies of large-scale client/server system development.
  • A wealth of nontrivial examples and exercises with all solutions are included in the book or the supplementary materials. The Instructor's Manual is not an afterthought — it has been written concurrently with the text and is meticulous.
  • Intended readership

In tune with the growing demand for university courses to be more relevant to industry practice, this textbook is aimed at students and practitioners alike. This has been a difficult task but, it is hoped, it has been successfully achieved. To ensure a lasting educational benefit, the implementation aspects of software development are discussed in non-vendor-specific terms (although commercial CASE tools have been used in illustrations and solutions).

The book is aimed at computer science and information systems curricula. As it contains both 'high-level' system modeling topics and 'low-level' user interface and database design issues, the book should be attractive to courses in system analysis, system design, software engineering, databases, object technology, and to software project courses that require students to develop a system following the development lifecycle: from requirements determination to GUI and database implementation. The book is designed for a one-semester course, but it can potentially be used over two one-semester courses — one on requirements analysis and the other on system design.

For the practitioners' audience, the presented theories are related to realities. Most problem statements, examples and exercises are drawn from the consulting practice of the author. We have adopted a policy of warning the reader of potential difficulties or limitations with advocated approaches. The following categories of practitioners are likely to benefit most from the book: business and system analysts, designers, programmers, system architects, project leaders and managers, reviewers, testers, technical writers, and industry trainers.

    Organization of the book

The book provides comprehensive coverage of object-oriented analysis and design of information systems. The material is presented in an order consistent with modern development processes. The book consists of ten chapters. The coverage is balanced between analysis and design. The first five chapters address the analysis issues and the last five design and related considerations.

Readers with varying amounts of background knowledge should be able to accommodate the text. Two chapters in the book are dedicated to an explanation of the underpinnings of analysis and design. The remaining chapters assume that the reader understands these underpinnings. The reader has a choice of studying the 'underpinnings' chapters in detail or of using them for review only.

The book has several features to improve its clarity and to break the monotony of the text, in particular:

    • Sections are small.
    • Example and problem statements are placed in frames to distinguish them from the rest of the text. A graphical icon (see below) in the page margin also marks the beginning of each example.
    • Page margins are used to:
      - number and caption figures and tables,
      - show graphical icons to identify examples in the text and end-of-chapter questions
    Supplementary materials

A comprehensive package of supplementary material is provided on the companion websites. Most of the web documents are freely available to the readers, but some material is password-protected for the benefit of instructors who have adopted the textbook in their teaching. The home page for the book is simultaneously maintained at:

A UML and system development book with rich case studies
    By IL YEOL SONG
Here is another excellent book on UML and system development using UML. I found this book highly practical, amusing, and instructive to read. Among the many excellent features of this book, I found the following five main strengths of the book. First, the book is rich with five case studies. Many books are rich in discussion, but weak in examples and case studies. This book uses five case studies. Some case studies are detailed while other case studies are short. Second, the book covers many advanced concepts, not usually covered by many other popular UML books in one volume. Those advanced features include reified classes, interface inheritance, implementation inheritance, extension inheritance, delegation, four types of aggregations, etc. Fourth, the book integrates other important parts of the system development activities such as user interface design, window navigation diagrams, database design for OO, OR, and relational databases. Fifth, therefore, the book covers all the life cycle of OO system developments, beginning from requirements modeling to user interface design, database design and testing. All these features make this book as an excellent choice for learning how to use UML to develop a complete system. One of several minor drawbacks is that some discussions appear in several different sections. This is due to a fairly long guided tutorial in Chapter 2.

    Developing Information Systems with UML
    By Jan Seruga
This book covers a very important issue of applying the new modeling language UML to analyse and design object-oriented information systems. The author clearly explains problems facing developers of information systems and offers practical advice on analysing and designing systems. Examples are offered to illustrate each new concept as it is introduced. The content of the book is applicable to the creation of high- quality software system. The book offers a good source for the learning about UML. The book is an interesting and useful and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about UML and object-oriented systems. It contains all you might want to know about software process: Requirements, Analysis, Design, Implementation and Test. Each chapter states the emphasis of the corresponding phase, describes the planning required for the phase. It mentions how this all fits in with the business case for the project and what the key deliverables are for each phase.

    Superficial, strained and vague

Honestly, I only endured this book to its middle. Superficial is the first characteristic that comes to mind. The author gives a brief description of object technology (which turnes out to be rather a list of UML concepts). A very short overview of requirement analysis follows - only "what", little of "why", almost nothing about "how". The requirements document template is here too, but you could really find better examples on the net, including real standards.
But only in chapter 4 the book starts to blossom. You quickly find out, that the author has little if any real world design experience. Yes, the case-studies are a bit strained, still they are tolerable. But the author does poor modeling: his models are, well, arguable. Some classes 'follow' from the requirements without real explanation. And the naming is just plain ugly: consider a 'areYouOpen' method on a Course class and an 'areYouValid' method on a Student class.
UML is covered, again, superficially. The short Fowler's book, UML Distilled, goes to greater depths on almost any topic (not to say Fowler *does* cover some experience in software process).
If you need anything better, than a one term undergraduate learn-and-forget coursebook, don't bother.

Advanced Scratch Programming: Learn to design programs for challenging games, puzzles, and animations, by Abhay B Joshi

There is a lot of material on Scratch Programming on the Internet, including videos, online courses, Scratch projects, and so on, but, most of it is introductory. There is very little that can take students to the next level, where they can apply their Scratch and CS concepts to exciting and challenging problems. There is also very little material that shows students how to design complex projects, and introduces them to the process of programming. This book is meant to fill these gaps. In short, this book is for students who are already familiar with Scratch: its various commands, its user interface, and how it represents a variety of CS concepts such as, variables, conditional statements, looping, and so on. The book does not attempt to teach these concepts, but, it does provide a quick introduction to each concept in the free Supplement to the book. I call this an “interactive book” because it is something between a traditional book – which is static and passive – and a fully interactive online course. It does look like a book: it has a series of chapters, diagrams, a lot of text, etc. But it also contains links to online Scratch programs, code snippets, references, which the reader is expected to click and explore to fully benefit from the ideas presented. I have organized the book as a series of independent Scratch projects – each of which describes how to design and build an interesting and challenging Scratch program. Each project progresses in stages – from a simple implementation to increasingly complex versions. You can read these chapters in any order you like, although I have tried to arrange the chapters in an increasing order of challenge. Programming is a powerful tool that can be applied to virtually any field of human endeavor. I have tried to maintain a good diversity of applications in this book. You will find the following types of projects: -Simple ball games -Puzzle games -Memory games -Science simulations -Math games -Geometric designs Learn the concepts: As the experts will tell you, concepts are really understood and internalized when you apply them to solve problems. The purpose of this book is to help you apply Scratch and CS concepts to solve interesting and challenging programming problems. Every chapter lists, at the very start, the Scratch and CS concepts that you will apply while building that project. Learn the design process: Besides these technical concepts, you will also learn the "divide and conquer" approach of problem-solving. This is a fancy term for the technique of breaking down a bigger problem into many smaller problems and solving them separately one by one. You will also learn the “iterative design process” for designing programs. This is another fancy name that describes the idea that something complex can be designed in a repeated idea -> implement -> test cycle, such that in each cycle we add a little more complexity. You will also learn a bit of “project management”. Project management helps you undertake a project, such as creating a complex program, and complete it in a reasonable time, with reasonable effort, and with reasonable quality. It involves things such as planning tasks, tracking their progress, etc. Audience for the book: The book is intended for students who are already familiar with Scratch. The level of challenge is tuned for middle- and high-school students, but elementary-school students who have picked up all the concepts in an introductory course might also be able to enjoy the projects presented in this book. The book would be a great resource for teachers who teach Scratch programming. They could use the projects to teach advanced tricks of programming and to show how complex programs are designed. Finally, the book is for anyone who wants to get the wonderful taste of the entertaining and creative aspect of Computer Programming.

    About the Author
This is Abhay's fourth programming book after publishing two volumes on Logo Programming in 2011 and "Learn CS Concepts with Scratch" in 2016. In the constructivist tradition of Piaget and Papert, Abhay views Computer Programming not just as a useful skill to build careers, but also as a "powerful medium for learning" in which students actively engage in a creative, entertaining, and intellectually challenging pursuit. Abhay has been conducting Scratch classes for middle and high school students since 2007. He divides his time between Seattle, USA and Pune, India.

A great resource to explore and code!
    By samm
Scratch is clearly the best first language for anyone who wants to learn programming. While a lot of books and online material show how Scratch can be used by elementary school kids for simple animations and games, there isn't much out there to show Scratch's potential as a platform for doing challenging work. This book fills that gap. It assumes that reader already knows Scratch (although the writer has provided a supplement that describes basic concepts), and provides a series of interesting and challenging projects. What I like the most is the easy tutorial-like fashion in which each chapter shows how to build the program step by step. There is a uniform methodology that you get to learn as a side-effect. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get ready for high school computer science.

Every age, for the last 50,000 years has left its unique imprint on the world, and from the first cave paintings to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, from the Byzantine mosaics of the Hagia Sophia, to the graffiti-inspired paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat, art history tells the story of our evolving notions of who and what we are and our place in the universe.

It takes you on a tour of thirty millennia of artistic expression, covering the artistic movements, major artists, and indispensable masterworks, and the world events and cultural trends that helped spawn them. Pretty much exactly what I expected - Art History, not pretty pictures
    By Greg Miller
I saw this book started off with ancient art, which I really have no interest in, but was willing to force my way through it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when the author almost ordered me to not read parts I wasn't interested in, and that most parts of the book were self contained. I think it really lives up to that.

I read the Kindle edition of this book, and I knew it'd be difficult to read the text and look at the artwork at the same time. I was very pleased to find I really didn't need to. The author did a great job of describing the important parts of the works and what was unique about them, so much so that most of the time I didn't bother actually looking at the photos unless they were incorporated into the text. And I think as long as the reader knows and expects the book to be about the history of art, and not just a collection of pretty pictures, they will be very pleased with this book.

Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason, by Alfie Kohn

Most parenting guides begin with the question “How can we get kids to do what they're told?” and then proceed to offer various techniques for controlling them. In this truly groundbreaking book, nationally respected educator Alfie Kohn begins instead by asking, “What do kids need—and how can we meet those needs?” What follows from that question are ideas for working with children rather than doing things to them.

One basic need all children have, Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including “time-outs”), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful, and largely unknown, research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval. That's precisely the message children derive from common discipline techniques, even though it's not the message most parents intend to send.

More than just another book about discipline, though, Unconditional Parenting addresses the ways parents think about, feel about, and act with their children. It invites them to question their most basic assumptions about raising kids while offering a wealth of practical strategies for shifting from “doing to” to “working with” parenting—including how to replace praise with the unconditional support that children need to grow into healthy, caring, responsible people. This is an eye-opening, paradigm-shattering book that will reconnect readers to their own best instincts and inspire them to become better parents.

    From Publishers Weekly
Author of nine books, including the controversial Punished by Rewards, Kohn expands upon the theme of what's wrong with our society's emphasis on punishments and rewards. Kohn, the father of young children, sprinkles his text with anecdotes that shore up his well-researched hypothesis that children do best with unconditional love, respect and the opportunity to make their own choices. Kohn questions why parents and parenting literature focus on compliance and quick fixes, and points out that docility and short-term obedience are not what most parents desire of their children in the long run. He insists that "controlling parents" are actually conveying to their kids that they love them conditionally—that is, only when they achieve or behave. Tactics like time-out, bribes and threats, Kohn claims, just worsen matters. Caustic, witty and thought-provoking, Kohn's arguments challenge much of today's parenting wisdom, yet his assertion that "the way kids learn to make good decisions is by making decisions, not by following directions" rings true. Kohn suggests parents help kids solve problems; provide them with choices; and use reason, humor and, as a last resort, a restorative time away (not a punitive time-out). This lively book will surely rile parents who want to be boss. Those seeking alternative methods of raising confident, well-loved children, however, will warmly embrace Kohn's message. (Mar.)Forecast: Kohn is a controversial and popular author/speaker, well regarded by scholars and educators. This title should appeal to parents who want to explore the "whys" and not just the "hows" of raising kids.

A paradigm shift in parenting that changes everything
    By Reader
Mind-blowing. I saw Alfie Kohn speak, and was deeply moved by his arguments against using positive reinforcement (bribes) and "logical consequences" (punishment) as a means to control children's behavior. He argues that by using a "doing to" approach, we teach our children that they should behave certain ways to either get rewards or avoid punishments. This removes the intrinsic desire to behave a certain way because it's the right way to behave, or because then our brother won't be unhappy and will play with us longer, etc. It confuses and changes the real reason we want our children to behave a certain way in the first place, and it controls their behavior through external means rather than helping them develop internal mechanisms for control. It can also make our children feel as though they're loved conditionally - his argument against forced time outs was absolutely heart-breaking and gut wrenching... to a small child, a forced time out is essentially forced isolation until they conform to something we want - it's the removal of our love and presence based on what a child has done. It's the opposite of unconditional love, and removes our support from them sometimes when they need it most.

This book is not about quick fixes, or easy strategies to get your child to "behave". It's about avoiding punishments and bribes that result only in "short term compliance at an extremely high cost", and opting for an approach of working with your child, instead. The second part of his book discusses in great length, with examples, ways that we can work with our children.

I don't agree completely with Kohn's removal of all parental praise - when his daughter climbed the stairs for the first time, he didn't applaud or freak out, he just said matter of factly "you did it". I'm more in the exuberant praise for major accomplishments category. However, I found his argument against using praise as a means of control extremely compelling. Don't praise your kid overly for putting his jacket on, because you want him to keep getting himself ready for school. Do celebrate (in my opinion) your children's accomplishments that they're proud of by sharing in their joy and applauding them also.

If I could get every parent to read this book, I would. I am so grateful that I discovered Alfie Kohn's work when my sons were preschool age. I believe this could help me raise resilient kids who feel loved, who trust me to be on their side, and who are at lower risk for dangerous behaviors as teenagers because they've had an opportunity to learn the real consequences of actions - not that mom or dad will be mad, but that now something is broken and needs to be repaired, or they may have to choose a different college, or mom was up late worrying because they weren't home. Punishments and bribes obscure the real reason we should do something, make our kids feel conditionally loved, and don't have positive long-term impacts on behavior.

How often have you heard parents justify their parental dictates on the basis of “because this family is not a democracy”? On the surface, that probably sounds rather common sensical. Who would think that little people who have never had to punch a time clock or make a mortgage payment would know anything about running a family? Instead, conventional wisdom (along with most “experts”) tell us that children need a firm, strong hand, clear boundaries and limits and predictable consequences for violating said limits.

Finally, at long last comes Alfie Kohn to turn such conventional assumptions on their head. Why, Kohn asks, should children be expected to be unquestioningly obedient to adults? Why should adult needs and desires necessarily trump those of children? In fact, if you ask most parents what they want for their children in the long run, you will probably hear words like “independent”, “self-assertive”, “creative” and “confident”. Why then do we so often fall back on day-to-day parenting strategies that insist on obedience and parental control?

Kohn is no Pollyanna. He recognizes that parenting is hard work and that there are real life demands that must be met. He is not naïve enough to think that children are always sweet and wonderful or that there’s a magic pill that will make children automatically helpful and cooperative. But he does argue that the stresses of parenting and family life, along with outside pressure, lead us to use control-based disciplinary techniques which seem like “common sense” and which may even be guaranteed to “work” by parenting “guidebooks” written by “experts”. Such tactics, however, according to Kohn, are not only counterproductive in the long run for actually increasing children’s responsiveness, but are actually harmful to children because of how they make (or at least seem to the child to make) parental love conditional on behavior, when what children really need is unconditional love.

Kohn deconstructs what punishment really means: making someone suffer – inflicting physical or emotional pain – for something “bad” they have done. He argues that it is hard to reconcile unconditional love with being willing to make a loved one suffer pain. Furthermore, Kohn does not limit punishment to things like spanking, yelling or taking away possessions. Kohn argues that “time-outs” – typically thought to be a gentler response to misbehavior – count as punishment too because of the use of “love withdrawal”. In fact, time-outs may be one of the worst forms of punishment because they explicitly tie parental love and attention to behavior, which sends the message to the child that s/he is only lovable when s/he is being “good”. Given how dependent children are on their parents, this is almost tantamount to the threat of abandoning the child if s/he doesn’t behave.

Moreover, Kohn goes further to show that focusing on rewarding children for positive behavior is little if any better than punishing bad behavior. Rewards and punishments, in fact, are simply flip sides of the same coin. Both focus on overt behavior rather than underlying causes of behavior. Both make parental love and approval conditional upon “good” behavior. And both are a form of control – methods of “doing to” children to coerce obedience.

Kohn argues instead that we should strive for “working with” methods of interaction which give kids a voice and sense of control over their own lives. Kohn argues that humans, including children, have a fundamental need to have a sense of control. Feeling overcontrolled can make kids either rebel and counteract the intention and efficacy of the controlling tactics, or else they will basically wilt and give in, thereby losing sense of their own autonomy and initiative. In either case, children experiencing too much control are likely to have less self-esteem (or, at least, self-esteem that is more conditional upon others’ approval), be less willing to take risks and explore, and be more susceptible to outside influences and pressure.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, however, Kohn is not arguing for a free-for-all. Giving up control does not mean a hands-off approach or letting children do and get away with whatever they want. In fact, unconditional parenting involves more parental engagement, not less. Parents need to be consistently working with their children; teaching, explaining and modeling appropriate behavior; explaining and helping children to understand the effects of their behavior on other people; working (and struggling) with – not against – their children to solve problems and conflicts and come up with mutually workable solutions; and struggling with their own vulnerabilities in order to allow for a more genuine presentation and authentic, trust-based relationships with children.

Making this extra effort pays off first of all in terms of greater responsiveness from children. In a seeming paradox, children who are less controlled respond better to parental directives when they are given and are more willing to cooperate with their parents. But more importantly, such efforts pay off in terms of raising happy, healthy, secure and confident young people who are better able to manage life in the “real world” than children whose parents have used controlling methods to get them “ready for” the real world. Moreover, secure and confident children are more likely to grow up to be the kinds of people who see the faults with the “real world” and who are willing to work to make them better rather than just accepting that that’s the way things are.

I have always had a sense of how I wanted to raise my daughters (currently ages 4 and 6), and neither punishments nor rewards have ever felt right to me (although I will confess to having used both at times, to my lasting regret). This book has helped me crystallize and articulate my misgivings as well as point me to a better path which I always sensed was there and which I’ve foundered around trying to find on my own. I am fortunate to have relatively “good” and “easy” children, but I’ve found that I can make things even easier (or at least less conflictual) by letting go and learning to trust my daughters’ good impulses and the loving upbringing I’ve given them so far. When it comes to picking battles, the only one I think is worth fighting is the battle to maintain a healthy, open relationship with them, and the less I punish or reward and the more I just listen and support, the less of a battle it is.

The concepts are very good and I agree with almost all of the ideas in this book. What was a little difficult for me was that there are very clear examples of what not to do and what not to say but not very specific examples of alternatives. I found it frustrating sometimes to understand that my parenting had been heavy on the punishment but was not really given any tools or guidance as to taking the next steps. Kohn clearly says it's not a "how to" book but it seems that it sometimes a little too much of "how not to..."

    From Publishers Weekly
This practical sex guide incorporates, but goes well beyond, marital sacramental theology, and as such will be welcomed by those who want to adhere to Catholic teaching yet still enjoy the passion of sexual union. Psychotherapist Popcak spends most of the book elaborating on the Catholic view of sex, citing various church documents and the writings of Pope John Paul II. He explains why sex is holy, how it differs from eroticism and why it is intended solely for one man and one woman who are married to each other and open to having children. In covering what he calls the good stuff, Popcak says restrictions are few. These center on the One Rule (a man must always climax inside the woman) and Four Pleasure Principles that deal with maintaining continuity between a couple's daily life together and their sexual relationship and respecting the dignity of each partner. As long as these guidelines are followed, Popcak says, couples are free to be creative sexually. He includes information on natural family planning (a Catholic Church–approved method of spacing births) and advice for sexual problems. Although Popcak writes in a warm, conversational style, he tends to overuse certain catch words and phrases, diminishing some of their impact. Nonetheless, his essential message makes this worthwhile reading. (Apr.)

What People Are Saying about HOLY SEX!

"Some books are worth reading because they make an important point, others for the sheer delight of the writing. Greg Popcak's Holy Sex! is both. Wherever one stands on the fine points of Catholic teaching about sex, Popcak reveals its deeply sensual core, debunking popular stereotypes of Catholicism as somehow anti-erotic. Think of this book as Thomas Aquinas meets Dr. Ruth, and enjoy!"

    - John L. Allen Jr., Senior Correspondent for National Catholic Reporter "Looking at contemporary popular culture, one finds that sex is overrated and undervalued. Greg Popcak helps to set things straight on both counts. He explains with intelligence and humor what some have learned only through painful experience, and many have still not learned--namely, that the joy of sex is not to be found in `liberation' from moral principles, but in its unique power to unite a man and woman as faithful partners in the love-building and life-giving union that marriage is."

    - Robert P. George, Professor, Princeton University

"Dynamic, faithful, funny, and informative, [Popcak] demonstrates how the Truth will set you free. Combining practical wisdom with the wisdom of the ages, Popcak leads men and women to the love they long for."

    - Christopher West, Fellow, Theology of the Body Institute

"It is no surprise to see Dr. Popcak treat marital sex as a truly joyful thing. And why not? He clearly points out, God designed man and woman to communicate his love in their spiritual and physical union. If married couples could actually experience their love-making as an expression of God's creative, joyous, and renewing love, wow!"

    - Most Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Steubenville

"Clearly, Dr. Popcak is a chaste, faithful, learned Catholic man with mountains of experience working with couples. I am confident that spouses who follow his advice will become holier and better partners. Those who are holier are certainly better lovers and thanks to Holy Sex! we now know the many ways this is true."

    - Janet E. Smith, Father Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics Sacred Heart Major Seminary

"In the last four decades, too many Americans have been led astray by self-styled experts promising sexual liberation and happiness, only to end up with broken hearts and broken bodies. By combining theological insight and psychological wisdom, Dr. Gregory Popcak offers a different path to men and women looking for a way to find happiness and virtue in their sexual lives... [Holy Sex! is a] powerful guide for navigating the joys and sorrows of sex."

    - W. Bradford Wilcox, Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Virginia

"Popcak does a great service by practically developing the last chapter of Karol Wojtyla's (John Paul II) Love and Responsibility. Marriage is work... an invaluable resource for all married and engaged couples."

    - Pia de Solenni, Feminist Theologian, Winner: Pontifical Prize of the Academies

"Greg Popcak is a wise and funny guy. He combines the ancient wisdom of the Faith with the best that contemporary science and compassionate human understanding have to offer in warm, generous, and practical insights that have already been invaluable to thousands."

    I didn't know what I didn't know
    By Perelandra
I think this book, along with Simcha Fisher's "The Sinner's Guide to Natural Family Planning", should be required reading for every Catholic couple, whether preparing for marriage or already married. Even those who have been married for many years can almost certainly learn something from this book.

My husband and I have been married for 11 years. After the birth of our first child almost 8 years ago, my body just fell apart--physically and emotionally. After a wonderful first few years, my libido became almost non-existent. I was overwhelmed with my new reality. Secular sources assured me that it was only a "matter of time" before my husband looked elsewhere to "get what he needed". Although we were best friends, I was terrified that he would leave me because that piece was almost completely missing from our marriage.

Until I started reading this book, I did not realize the extent to which I had been fed extremely wrong information, not only by "the world" in the form of eroticism, but also during my overly strict traditional Catholic upbringing. Although my husband and I have only ever used NFP (when not just abstaining altogether), deep down I felt like I was a terrible Catholic because I wasn't having as many babies as I could. This, even while I was struggling mightily with OCD and depression while being a full-time mother to my two children. I thought I was a terrible, selfish wife and woman because I wasn't serving my husband's needs whether I felt like it or not. I felt like a failure.

While this book has shown me that we do have some things to work on, it has also improved my self esteem and confidence in myself and my relationship. I understand now that the feelings I have beaten myself up about are natural and valid, even if not good. I understand now that I am different from my husband, but equal--not less. We both deserve to have love, affection and attention that makes us WANT to be physical as the next natural step. It shouldn't be a chore. I understand now that it is perfectly good, healthy and desirable to be my husband's best friend (I had been told that this is bad for a relationship).

Things have picked up, and I am much happier now. Shame and fear are paralyzing. The Catholic Church's teachings on sexuality are beautiful, and I wish I had learned them properly sooner.

I was nervous about the 'bad' reviews but after reading the book I found them to be miss-interpretations & miss-understandings
    By Maria0206
I was nervous about reading this book because of the 'bad' reviews and I am a very Conservative Catholic. However, unlike the 'bad' reviews claim. I can only imagine they miss-understood Gregory or skipped around the book rather than reading the whole thing. I found nothing anti-Catholic and I thought he was very professional and theological in his approach. His attempt at humor (which could be miss-interpreted as crass) isn't the smoothest but that doesn't discredit his words and experience. His positive view on sex has set me free from a lot of miss-conceptions I had and has challenged my husband to 'man-up' in a few areas. My parents never taught me the beauty of sex after marriage, simply because they were never taught it and they didn't have great books like this to help them out. I struggled with my mindset of sex after marriage being the same as before marriage. My husband leaned in the erotic direction. This book has helped us make a beautiful transition to a more balance perspective. If you are very Conservative I recommend you read it with an open mind and re-read anything that upsets you to make sure you read it right and then pray about it for a few days before you pass judgement. I found great peace in doing this.
