Wonderfully insightful and healing. A family love story with food!

I cannot say enough about this book. It is heartfelt, healing, wonderfully insightful and painful at times to read, but well worth the effort. If you see my name in the acknowledgments and thanks at the end of this book and think that is why I am writing this wonderful review you would be wrong. I am an avid reader and when I mean I am an avid reader let's just say I read about 75 books a year. So I don't give books this kind of praise easily. But I couldn't put it down. I believe this book will help many people who have lost their mothers. I am lucky I still have my mom and cannot imagine having to go through what Diana has but when that time comes, I hope I can handle it with as much grace, love and compassion as she has. Plus as an added bonus she shares all her mama's wonderful recipes with us. I need start cooking some Mexican food! Diana thank you. ~ Melisa

Molé Mama: A Memoir of Love, Cooking and Loss Devour, is the word that describes how I experienced this story- as timeless as life. It is a love letter to Diana's mother, sweet Rose, of a life shared and savoring those last precious moments of life. Rarely are we given the gift of knowing of a parent's impending death. Being present in the moment creates an urgency that can only be termed as brave. Heart breaking and beautiful, you can almost taste the wonderful Mexican food that Diana creates for her mother to entice her to back to health. I yearned for my mother in a way that I hadn't felt since her death in 2001. It was difficult to reflect on her loss while reading about Diana's journey. Understanding her journey and finding the connection that we all will share. If your mother is here this Mother's day, hold her a little bit tighter when you hug her. The love for a mother is eternal and we will always yearn for the love, strength and lessons they gave us.

Academics will love this book

I was expecting illustrated symbols but there aren't many illustrations. There is obviously exhaustive research and they are enjoyable to read but this is not the Cliff Notes of symbols which is what I hoped for. Buyer Beware. Academics will love this book. Artists looking for inspiration, not so much.

It is very informative, but...

As the title said, it is a dictionary. But because it is one of symbols i had assumed that it would not only tell about the symbols but also show what they look like. It talks about many types of symbolism and some history of certain symbols, but as i said, i wih they did more than describe it.

Wonderful resource

I have been using this for years and recently have lost track of my original hardback edition. I bought two, one for my stepson who made the comment recently that he wished he had a copy.
This is so much more than one of those this is what the symbol means, this provides true semiotic description and analysis often with historical context. Excellent tool for writers and close readers or people just interested in signs and symbols.

I loved this book entirely for the way it focuses on ...

I loved this book entirely for the way it focuses on self-respect. If you respect yourself enough, and don't fall for any b.s., and don't put up with it either, you will find the right guy for you. It's not about appeasing him. It's about serving your needs and finding the person who will best suit your life. You aren't an object; you have feelings and opinions; and you are in no way his servant. You are you, and you deserve the best.

Several chapters in here had their faults-- for example, teaching women how to behave while giving their guy oral sex. First of all, you NEVER have to do anything you don't want to do. Second, with the men saying pretty bluntly that they expect you to not enjoy it, there is no real motivation on your part to do it. Only do what you want to do.

Secondly, there's a section on "tests" vs. disrespect, whereby men will try to evaluate you by purposely being jerks-- but as Sherry even points out, any amount of disrespect is too much. Do not tolerate any of it. I don't mean put up a fuss- I mean get a new guy. If he's going to do that, as she explains as well, he'll try more and more disrespectful things just to see what he can get away with. You don't want that type of guy. Don't waste your time. And, as she says as well, once you're out of it, and realize you've been letting yourself be disrespected, that's the killer for you. That's what'll bother you most. So don't go down that path. You deserve the best!

The whole purpose of this book, minus the parts I didn't agree with, above, is to invest in yourself, and value yourself first. You don't need him; you want him. You are whole on your own. And you are the one who gets to ask: what's in it for me? instead of "where is this relationship going?" Who gave him that control? Not you! Not me! You live your life and the right guy will come and see how he can fit into it. Enjoy!

This is the perfect book

I cannot say enough good things about this book!
So many women think the clingyness, and the nagging will win a guy over But it fails so badly. This is a book every woman needs to read!
Here are some things I learned from this book

* After a year or two, He knows if you will stay , he's getting a free ride. He assumes if you are letting him have that free ride, there is something wrong with you.

A B*** has strength of conviction! she will leave if she doesn't get what she wants. Thats why she always ends up with what she wants.

She doesn't hint or talk about marriage, No "where is this going?" she instead hints about the removal of herself from the relationship.

Stand up for yourself in a diginified, Feminine and womanly way You can get anything you want from a man this way.

What I love about this book, Is it doesn't teach you to be trashy, It teaches you to be bold, And yourself. Many women feel it's necessary to be a doormat. But it's not. You need to keep your Dignity!

What is the advantage of having this guy around?
How do I feel about myself after I've spent time with this guy?

- He marries the woman who won't lay down like linoleum.
- He doesn't marry the perfect woman, He marrys the interesting.
He gets bored if shes too perfect.

* Be real, NOT artificial.

Men play games with women too, While this book somewhat encourages head games with men, You need realize that men play games with you too..
Like...
- Sometimes he tells you something he likes to "bait" you .
Whenever you are worried about someone elses approval that person loses respect for you.

When a woman reacts emotionally, The man gets 3 things
1. Attention
2. Control
3. Feelings of importance

When you are easily manipulated, He assumes he doesn't have to give as much as far as commitment to keep you there.
When you respond with a level head He'll realize he's dealing with an equal.
* Men hear what they see.

Know the difference from a test and disrespect.
- Disrespected is repeated and continual.
Example: He'll call and cancel a date to see how you respond.
That is a test.

If you don't provide a reaction to his bad behavior, It takes the fun out of it. And He'll stop.
Once you start copying the same behavior he's doing, The bad behavior will suddenly stop.

*If he gives you a legitimate reason on things, Be understanding.
When you speak calmly, He assumes it's more important.

- When you attack him, He doesn't correct it or examine his bad behavior. You need to avoid attacking him.
But at the same time let him know his behavior doesn't fly.

Financial Dependence

Men are constantly worried whether or not a man likes him, Or only likes him for what he can provide.
-When he feels you can't be bought, Thats when he thinks about marriage.

Men worry about losing their freedom with marriage. When you are focused on your dreams and your own goals, He worries less about losing his freedom.

Appreciate the small things, Don't appreciate the item it's self, Acknowlege the kindness behind it.

I could go on forever about the things I loved about this book! get your pen and paper ready, You'll want to take notes, And reread your notes! This book has so much good stuff in it, Definitely one of my favorite relationship books.

Great advice for life in general

I read this book, as well as the first one ("Why Men Date Bitches"), and I think they are both full of great information that a person can apply not only to dating, but life as well. Women too often let people walk all over them, and accommodate every whim because they think it will get people to like them more (I speak from personal experience). But when you realize it's the people who don't do this are actually the ones getting people to fawn all over them, it's easy to understand why men would go for the "bitch." I've made all my friends read the dating one, unfortunately they don't apply the principles, and surprise, surprise, none of them have healthy relationships. I'm not saying that if you don't do what this book says, you will have unhealthy relationships; my friends are just those nice girls who think that doing everything for their man will keep him around and satisfied, and that goes to show that it's not always true.

My field of specialty is Geriatrics, so this book provided many areas of expertise that has better prepared me for when I am ready to practice. The chapters we detailed with relevant information. Journalist Strauss, who has coauthored books with the band members of Mötley Crüe (The Dirt) and porn superstar Jenna Jameson (How to Make Love Like a Porn Star) now offers a terrific look at the dysfunctional livelihoods of stardom, a theme based on his many interviews for various publications. Strauss went back to his original interview tapes and notes in search of moments—mostly unpublished—that reveal "the truth or essence of each person, story, or experience." He liberally and ingeniously cuts back and forth between scenes, such as pairing the youthful, arrogant claims of Oasis that the band could have been the Beatles in the 1960s with the tortured feeling of the Who's aging leader Pete Townshend ("All we can do in the future is look back"). In other instances, he shows the self-doubt shared by Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner and actor Orlando Bloom. The section with Julian Casablancas is pretty funny but there's not much redeeming about this book

I'm no Neil Strauss fanatic. The Game changed my life and Emergency was a very interesting read. I've never read his rock bios or even his interviews. So ELYWYD was a miss for me. It's become a bathroom book. I was hoping for more of a narrative but there really isn't one, it's just an anthology of mostly bland interviews.

Maybe i'm of a dissenting opinion but i don't find Lady Gaga all that interesting. I think it was a mistake to put her in the book, as nobody will care or even really remember her a decade from now. On top of that, it's just her backstage rambling about her family. Who cares?

The section on Brian Wilson should have been interesting but it's not. All we learn about him is that his wife answers for him a lot because he's done so many drugs that it's impossible for him to complete a thought.

For some reason, Strauss goes on for page after page about what happened to wax sculptures from a closed-down Nashville museum. Again, who cares? They ended up where you'd expect them to end up. Melting in a basement somewhere.

The Who? Who cares?

The guy from Soul Asylum? Who REALLY cares?

The section with Julian Casablancas is pretty funny but there's not much redeeming about this book. And it's long. Strauss phoned it in with this one.

AWESOME!

This is the first book that I've read by Neil Strauss but won't be my last. He's an amazing author and interviewer. Every interview in this book is entertaining. I've learned so much about the celebrities I've admired my whole life by just reading these in depth raw interviews. I really like how each interview is extremely different than the last. It will go from Snoop Dogg to Johnny Cash to Britney Spears to Led Zeppelin to Madonna and so on. All the words from each interview are coming strait from the mouths of each interviewee and not manipulated and twisted by journalists and thrown together for a magazine article. You'll really get to know each and every celebrity on a personal level. I would recommend this book to anyone. I've found a new respect for almost every person in this book based. It's all very entertaining!!!

So much more than a compilation of interviews

I was pleasantly surprised by Everyone Loves You When You're Dead (ELYWYD?). I was expecting a collection of Strauss' interviews over the years, assembled, like every other such book, in some kind of mundane order-- the interview with Madonna, then Gaga, then Bowie, etc.-- I was expecting to read the interviews I was interested in and skip the ones I wasn't.

Thankfully, ELYWYD is so much more than that. The book splices dozens of Strauss' interviews into a narrative so that, unlike most books of interviews, you actually want to read this one cover to cover. The narrative sometimes follows a theme (contrasting different rock stars' views on faith, struggles with addictions, their childhoods, battles with record companies, etc.), and other times explores a particular story (for instance why some members of Pink Floyd don't speak to one another and why Pete Townshend resisted re-forming The Who).

Like most of Strauss' books, this one's a page-turner. I read over 300 pages in one day. The book goes down so easy that it's easy to take for granted how *big* it is, in every sense. It's the condensation of apparently a couple decades worth of rock journalism, and assembling such a crazily entertaining narrative from what must have been thousands of hours of interview tapes must have been no easy task. But as entertaining and fun as the book is, it's also a deep and surprisingly illuminating exploration of fame, art, and ego. It's a major and important book on music, stardom, and, well, the times we live in.

There's a lot more to say, and I'm sure many other reviewers will jump in and say it. Anyone with a serious interest in music or pop culture in general will probably devour Strauss' ELYWYD.

About the Author
Dr. Samir Desai serves on the faculty of the Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He is actively involved in medical student education and a member of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine. As an author, he has written 12 books that together have sold over 150,000 copies worldwide.

His book, Success in Medical School: Insider Advice for the Preclinical Years, provides students with the knowledge and guidance to excel during the first two years of medical school. In 2009, he co-authored The Successful Match: 200 Rules to Succeed in the Residency Match, a book that has helped thousands of residency applicants match successfully. Other books include the best-selling Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine: Pocket. This resource, widely used by students, offers a unique step-by-step approach to lab test interpretation.

After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern, he had the opportunity of serving as chief medical resident. He received his M.D. degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, graduating first in his class.

Dr. Rajani Katta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine. She is the course director for dermatology in the basic sciences, and has served as the clerkship director for the dermatology rotation. Nearly 2/3's done with 3rd year rotations, and the only thing that's really benefited me out of this book are their formats for SOAP notes and presentations. Other than that, I haven't really used anything else in this book and I've honored every rotation so far.

Very helpful!

This book is an easy read! I am happy with this purchase. I picked it up just before my surgery rotation and without the sample templates for orders and notes, I would not have performed as well as I did. Going in I had no idea about all the different orders and notes I would be in charge of writing. This book was a real help. The book also contains some interesting factoids about things attendings and residents like and expect from clerks.

Great read for a newbie high tech marketer

The author's emphasis is on distinguishing between the selling and marketing tactics for the early innovators versus the mainstream customers. There is a chasm between the innovators and mainstream market and the author dedicates the book outlining the various steps a high tech company should perform to successfully navigate through the chasm.

Some key points and lessons learned:

- It is important to maintain momentum in order to create a bandwagon effect that makes it natural for the next group to want to buy in.

- Early adopters want a change agent while the early majority looks for productivity improvement for existing operations - they want an evolution not revolution.

- Vapor vare should be avoided during chasm crossing - Vapor vare is pre-announcing and pre-marketing a product which still requires significant development.

- Resistance is a function of inertia growing out of the commitment to the status quo, fear of risk or lack of compelling reason to buy.

- Crossing the chasm requires moving from an environment of support among visionaries back into one of skepticism among pragmatists. It means that moving from product related issues to unfamiliar ground of market oriented issues AND moving from the familiar audience of like minded specialist to uninterested generalist.

-It is the market centric value system - supplemented ( but not superseded ) by the product centric - One that must be the basis for the value profile of the target customers when crossing the chasm.

- Positioning: Goal should be to make products easier to buy not easier to sell. The four stages in positioning:
1. Name it and frame it - Positioning needed to make a product easy to buy for a technology enthusiast.
2. Who for and what for - Positioning needed to make the product easy to buy from the visionary.
3. Competition and differentiation - Positioning needed to make the product easy to buy for the pragmatist.
4. Financials and future plans - Positioning needed to make the product easy to buy for the conservative.

- During the chasm period, the number one concern of pricing is not to satisfy the customer or the investor, but to motivate the channel.

- When crossing the chasm we are looking to attract customer oriented distribution by using distribution oriented pricing. There are two types of pricing strategies: value based and cost based. The value based strategy is based on the final big value the client will realize using the product while the cost based is dependent upon the cost incurred to deliver the product.

Its one of the first Marketing books I've read that didn't read like a self-promotional circlejerk. The topic is broken down in a way thats easy to understand. Theres a ton of useful, insightful, and valuable content in here.

If you work at a growing startup, even if you're not on the marketing side, you owe it to yourself to read this.

A Bible in High-Tech Marketing

This book offers a true blueprint for companies looking to market and sell innovative high-tech products in a mainstream market.

This blue print begins by segmenting customers into groups with different needs and goals (innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards). These groups do not form a continuous spectrum. Indeed, there are gaps that exist that any company looking to succeed needs to understand and bridge. Once the company identifies the highly specific target segment within a mainstream marketplace, they then proceed to understanding their compelling reasons to buy. Then they must build around the notion of a "whole product" with the aid of partners as required to make that a reality. To further help the customer, the company must clearly define their competition and how they position themselves with respect to them. Finally comes selecting a distribution channel and ensuring that the sales force is empowered to deliver the required results.

From my perspective, this book helps any IT executive understand how to better work with technology vendors. In addition to helping them identify the ones that are indeed there to stay and grow. It also pushes IT executives to make fundamental decisions on where in the consumer spectrum they want to position themselves based on their needs and the risks that they are willing to undertake.

In all a very good and informative read. Despite it being originally written in the 90s the fundamentals of the blueprint still hold true. This is a true bible in the field of technology marketing. On the critiquing side, I would say that this book could have been written in a more concise fashion. It seemed slow at times, when reading it. Also, it would have been great to see updated examples of the principles described which would make it easier to reflect upon from a more recent perspective.
