On April 20, 1999, two boys went to their high school with bombs and guns. Their goal was to leave "a lasting impression on the world." The horror they inflicted left an indelible stamp on the American psyche.

Now in this definitive account, Dave Cullen presents a compelling and utterly human profile of teenage killers. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on hundreds of interviews, thousands of pages of police files, FBI psychologists, and the boys' tapes and diaries. This close-up portrait of violence, a community rendered helpless, and police blunders and cover-ups is an unforgettable cautionary tale for our time. In the tradition of Helter Skelter and In Cold Blood, COLUMBINE is a revelatory work destined to be a classic.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this remarkable account of the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School shooting, journalist Cullen not only dispels several of the prevailing myths about the event but tackles the hardest question of all: why did it happen? Drawing on extensive interviews, police reports and his own reporting, Cullen meticulously pieces together what happened when 18-year-old Eric Harris and 17-year-old Dylan Klebold killed 13 people before turning their guns on themselves. The media spin was that specific students, namely jocks, were targeted and that Dylan and Eric were members of the Trench Coat Mafia. According to Cullen, they lived apparently normal lives, but under the surface lay an angry, erratic depressive (Klebold) and a sadistic psychopath (Harris), together forming a combustible pair. They planned the massacre for a year, outlining their intentions for massive carnage in extensive journals and video diaries. Cullen expertly balances the psychological analysis—enhanced by several of the nation's leading experts on psychopathology—with an examination of the shooting's effects on survivors, victims' families and the Columbine community. Readers will come away from Cullen's unflinching account with a deeper understanding of what drove these boys to kill, even if the answers aren't easy to stomach. (Apr. 6)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Many reviewers were more concerned with coming to grips with the attack rather than assessing the book, but their concern may be a testament to Cullen’s work. His reporting fundamentally reframes the event: Columbine, he writes, should be thought of as a failed bombing rather than a school shooting. Furthermore, much of the conventional wisdom about how to prevent such attacks—essentially, watch out for pimply outcasts with a grudge—is confounded by an investigation into Harris’s and Klebold’s actual lives. Most critics, with Janet Maslin a notable exception, thought that Cullen’s account helps us to better wring meaning from the tragedy. In sum, Columbine “is an excellent work of media criticism, showing how legends become truths through continual citation” (New York Times Book Review).Copyright 2009 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Although much has been written about the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, little of it has helped to explain why two high-school students went on a rampage, killing 13 people and wounding scores of others. Cullen, acclaimed expert on Columbine, offers a penetrating look at the motivation and intent of the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Drawing on interviews, police records, media coverage, and diaries and videotapes left behind by the shooters, Cullen examines the killers’ beliefs and psychological states of mind. Chilling journal entries show a progression from adolescent angst to psychopathic rage as they planned a multistage killing spree that included bombs that ultimately didn’t detonate. Cullen goes beyond detailing the planning and execution of the shootings, delving into the early lives of the killers as well. He explores the aftermath for the town of Littleton, Colorado: survivors’ stories, investigation into how the sheriff’s department mishandled the crisis, several ongoing legal issues, exploitation of the shooting by some religious groups and sensationalists, and the school’s battle to regain its identity. Cullen debunks several Columbine myths, including the goth angle and a martyrdom story of a girl who proclaimed her belief in God before she was killed. Graphic and emotionally vivid; spectacularly researched and analyzed. --Vanessa Bush

Columbine
By Kdragonrose21
If you want straightforward, factual information on the murders at Columbine High School, this is the book you want to read. It presents the facts and debunks many of the myths, but it also explains where the myths and misconceptions originated from. A lot of reviewers of this book disliked the way Cullen told the story by going back and forth between the day of the killings and the events leading up to April 20, 1999, but I thought it was a unique way to present the information. A lot of books written about events such as this tend to lead with all the background information and it can cause the reader to get bored. By weaving the background within the story of the killings, it kept me engaged in the story. This book also tackled the Cassie Bernall/Valeen Schnurr mix-up in a way that clarifies what happened without degrading Cassie Bernall, her family or those who still consider Cassie Bernall a martyr. This book also devotes a lot of effort into understanding the thought processes of both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Many other accounts I've read simply label Harris as a psychopath and Klebold as a "follower" or "sidekick" This book has more insight on Harris and Klebold than any other account I've read. It also explores the law enforcement cover-up of their knowledge about Eric Harris's bomb experimentation and his history of violent threats. A must-read for anyone looking to know the truth about what happened and to understand what can be done to prevent these attacks in the future.

Groundbreaking

Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre and factors surrounding it on all sides. Dave Cullen does a phenomenal job at deconstructing the inaccurate narrative that most of us still hold about the event, and provides a platform for the victims' stories to be heard as well. We need critical, thoughtful explorations like this book if we are to truly learn from horrific events like Columbine.

The BEST research on this subject ever done...
By L. Vandeveer
A good read for those trying to understand what happened. It is VERY WELL researched and gives insight into the boys' parents, for whom I feel nothing but deep sorrow. Psychopaths are difficult for even professionals to recognize, let alone the poor parent dealing with one. Most people will have difficulty understanding a true psychopath unless they have actually dealt with one personally, and so tend to think poor parenting was involved, instead of realizing these children are just wired wrong from the get-go. It would be a wonderful day if/when the DSM finally recognized these people are mentally ill, which it currently doesn't. There's really no treatment that works for a psychopath, and yet they are not considered insane. Really, our definition of "sanity" should be redefined, enabling the healing arts to properly label these people and give the legal system a way to deal with them: Incarcerate them for life in order to protect the rest of us who are being victimized.

Amazon.com Review
Unless your species evolved sometime after 1993 when Jurassic Park hit theaters, you're no doubt familiar with this dinosaur-bites-man disaster tale set on an island theme park gone terribly wrong. But if Speilberg's amped-up CGI creation left you longing for more scientific background and ... well, character development, check out the original Michael Crichton novel. Although not his best book (get ahold of sci-fi classic The Andromeda Strain for that), Jurassic Park fills out the film version's kinetic story line with additional scenes, dialogue, and explanations while still maintaining Crichton's trademark thrills-'n'-chills pacing. As ever, the book really is better than the movie. --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly
An island off Costa Rica will soon be the world's most ambitious theme park--a dinosaur preserve. A visionary financier's biotechnology company has succeeded in cloning these extinct reptiles. Fifteen different species, presumably incapable of breeding, are now placidly roaming around, but Jurassic Park's resident mathematician, an expert in chaos theory, predicts that the animals' behavior is inherently unstable. When a rival genetics firm attempts to steal frozen dinosaur embryos, things go haywire. Two cute American kids, eight-year-old Tina and 11-year-old Tim, a safari guide from Kenya and a Denver paleontologist set things aright--almost. Though the dinosaurs here are more interesting than the people, Crichton ( The Andromeda Strain ) ingeniously interweaves details of genetic engineering, computer wizardry and current scientific controversy over dinosaurs to fashion a scary, creepy, mesmerizing techno-thriller with teeth. It can be read as a thought-provoking fable about technological hubris and the hazards of bioengineering. 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; movie rights sold to Steven Spielberg/Universal Pictures .

From School Library Journal
YA-- Massive sums spent on biotechnology, 24 Cray supercomputers sent to a fog-shrouded island off Costa Rica, and expert advice bought from paleontologists have combined to produce the most incredible amusement park of all time. Jurassic Park is inhabited by real dinosaurs, over 200 of them, all cloned from snippets of ancient DNA. Crichton is a master at blending technology with fiction, creating a tale all the more terrifying because it could happen. And the terror is heightened when dinosaurs escape from their barricaded area on the island, an event occasioned by the foolhardiness of relying on technology to control their range. Readers can just imagine being caught in the open with these dinosaurs after there's been a massive power outage on the island. Suspense, excitement, and good adventure pervade this book--and few YAs will be able to resist it.

One of the greatest books I've ever read
By Brian
Welcome to Jurassic Park. I'm sure that most of you have seen the movie or read the book. But if you haven't -- Jurassic Park is a "theme" park that's main attractions are genetically brought back Dinosaurs. No animatronics or misdirection. These are real flesh and blood dinos. The unfortunate part about using real animals is that they are unpredictable. And you can guess where this unpredictability goes.

The narration for the 25th Anniversary Edition of Jurassic Park was done by Scott Brick who just absolutely blows this away. It has to be hard to narrate such an iconic book when it has a cult following and when there is a movie based off of it too. You would already have voices in your head for some of the characters. But Brick just crushes it. He gave me goosebumps numerous times in his reading of this.

This book has a lot of memory tied into it with me. It is one of the first books I ever remember not going outside to play to read more of. I think it was one of the first books I ever got on my own from the library (to which I've later owned numerous copies over the years). Jurassic Park was the first book that made me realize that a good book would keep you entertained. A great book would make you forget that there was the world around you.

Jurassic Park the novel is probably one of the books I keep highest on my review pedestal. I was a little worried that going back to it more than 10-15 years after first reading it and having seen the movie probably 30 times that it wouldn't have the same edge. I couldn't have been more wrong. I knew that Crichton could write. I knew he was innovative, writing about powerful computers in books like Jurassic Park and Congo before they were even on the horizon. But I forgot just how good Crichton was at holding my attention.

Jurassic Park STILL gave me goosebumps years later. It still had me hiding under the covers. And wondering what would happen next. If you are one of those people who think, "is the book really that much better?" Yes, yes, yes. A thousand times over yes. You need to read this book. You will see how visionary Crichton was. You will also notice that pieces of ALL FOUR movies were picked from this novel (and if you pick up The Lost World After, you'll see even more). There are scenes in this that made it into every movie that was associated with the Jurassic Park namesake.

I could write for days about this book, but know that this 25th Anniversary Edition is incredible. Scott Brick brings this book to life, which when you're reading it makes for some scary stuff! Please do yourself a favor and check this book out. I promise you won't regret it.

I'll be satisfied. I'll be honest with you though
By Amazon Customer
Do not push off reading this book because you saw the movie! Steven Spielberg does a solid job at telling the story of the book without spoiling the book. I've never read a Crichton (I can't even pronounce his last name) book before this one. I've seen almost every movie that was inspired from his books though, so indirectly, I'm a fan of the guy. I had no idea how complex his story telling ability was. I have three more of his books lined up just waiting in my "Runner Ups for next read" list. I am so pumped to read them! If they're half as entertaining as this book was, I'll be satisfied.

I'll be honest with you though, it is very slowed paced the first 100+ pages, but once you get passed those pages, it shoots off like a freaking rocket and just won't let you jump off.

I felt like it was my duty to finish this book.

My only complaint is the epilogue, I wish it wasn't in the book. The chapter before the Epilogue ends the book beautifully. You felt an emotional connection with the characters, then the epilogue happens. I won't spoil anything other than the epilogue opens up for 'The Lost World' to begin, I feel obligated now to finish the story. My next read will have to be the sequel to this great story.

Intense Thrill Ride
By Kindle Customer
Having seen the film, I thought I was familiar with the book. WRONG. This excellent novel stands on its own and I can't help but wonder how the film would've been if they had stuck to the book. I love the book. No romance and sentiment, and the little girl is annoying as hell. Crichton really has a flair for storytelling and backs it up with the necessary science to boot. John Hammond is an elitist snob who gets his comeuppance, a major change from Spielberg's film. The film kept some of the storyline and only a few characters and made the rest family-friendly. The Book stands on it's own as a work of art and one hell of a book. I'm surprised that there is no audio book version of this work, as there is one for the sequel The Lost World. Whether you have seen the film or not you definitely should read Jurassic Park. So many of the themes still ring true in this day and age. So good, I will have to read it again! A must have for any collection.

Women of the Pleasure Quarters: The Secret History of the Geisha, by Lesley Downer

Ever since Westerners arrived in Japan, they have been intrigued by Japanese womanhood and, above all, by geisha. This fascination has spawned a wealth of extraordinary fictional creations, from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly to Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha. But as denizens of a world defined by silence and mystery, real geisha are notoriously difficult to meet and even to find. As a result, their history has long been cloaked in secrecy.

Lesley Downer, an award-winning writer, Japanese scholar, and consummate storyteller, gained more access to this world than almost any other Westerner, and spent several months living in it. In Women of the Pleasure Quarters, she weaves together intimate portraits of modern geisha with the romantic legends and colorful historical tales that shape their fascinating past. Contrary to popular opinion, geisha are not prostitutes but, literally, "arts people." Accomplished singers, dancers, and musicians, they are, above all, masters of the art of conversation, soothing the worries and stroking the egos of wealthy businessmen who can afford their attentions. Looking into such traditions as mizuage, the ritual deflowering that was once a rite of passage for all geisha, and providing colorful descriptions of their dress, training, and homes, Downer transforms their reality into a captivating narrative, and reveals an enthralling world unlike any other.

From Publishers Weekly
Inspired by Arthur Golden's massively popular Memoirs of a Geisha to "meet the real geisha" in the last stronghold of geisha training in Japan, Downer skillfully intertwines her profiles of Kyoto personalities and tea-house customs with a fluidly written geisha history that's unabashedly aimed at a Western audience. Author of On the Narrow Road and The Brothers: The Hidden World of Japan's Richest Family, Downer was no stranger to the country. However, she found the entrance to the "geisha world" heavily guarded. She writes: "I was always an outsider, I could never step through the looking glass." But small successes (finding the right cakes to present to "the mama," a very powerful geisha) and patience eventually won Downer a place at events that are "utterly closed to outsiders." These included an invitation to a young girl's misedashi ("store opening"), the "rite of passage" from trainee to geisha. We also learn, for example, of the distinction that has developed between a prostitute and a geisha (which translates as "arts person"), who undergoes intense and lengthy apprenticeships in dance and music. Written in dynamic, highly readable prose, the book is supported by exhaustive research and a lengthy bibliography. Readers who were as smitten with Golden's geisha as Downer was will find this good companion reading. Photos.

From Library Journal
A British journalist with a passion for Japan, Downer documented the travels of 17th-century Japanese poet Basho in On the Narrow Road to the Deep North (1989), delved into Japan's rich and famous with The Brothers: The Hidden World of Japan's Richest Family (LJ 6/1/95), and now uncovers the history, society, and subversive culture of the geisha through her diligent research and translations. She leads the reader through 400 years of history, much of which was previously unknown to the outside world, revealing that the first geishas were male and describing the rituals and delicate arts practiced by the select few. In addition, she explores why women may find themselves drawn to this way of life today. Downer sees this culture as declining but not dying. The embodiment of love and passion has, for hundreds of years, been the domain of the geisha, and to a people for whom these emotions have rarely been a part of everyday life, the geisha will remain a living symbol of romance. Yet while Downer has done a more-than-adequate job of researching and relating this information, plowing through her book can be a chore. Surprisingly, she has made somewhat sordid situations rather pedantic, and it is disappointing that she is not more perceptive on the absence of much change in the role of women over the geisha's history. From Booklist
Since the 1997 publication of Arthur Golden's novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, the geisha of Japan have captivated world readers. Downer's fascinating book is a combination of the history of the geisha and a study of the contemporary world of the geisha. When journalist Downer began her research in Japan, people were reluctant to talk to her because they feared misinterpretation and were also mindful of the secretive nature at the heart of the profession. But when she finally broke through the cultural barrier, she found a wealth of information. She learned the history of the geisha: how they developed from courtesans to become the top entertainers in their day. She was allowed into exclusive teahouses and was able to see maiko (geisha-in-training) being made up, having their hair done, and entertaining. Throughout the book, she muses on the fate of the modern geisha, as other sources of entertainment threaten to crowd them out. Downer concludes that because of what they represent--romance, fantasy, the golden days--the institution won't die out. Kristine Huntley

Interesting...but seems to focus on non-geisha
By S. J. Bice
I found this an interesting read, but it seems to focus alot on non-geisha or psuedo-geisha. It does talk quite a bit about prostitution, which does not really factor into high-class geisha, and never has.

I think that it focuses on the author a bit too much as well, and her problems getting into this closed world. While at points it reads as a narritive, at others it gets very dry...the author can not seem to pick a "voice" to stick with.

An interesting read, but I do not think that it should be taken a holy grail of Geisha books.

An interesting counterpoint to Dalby
By SecondCherry
I enjoyed reading this book, which acts as a good counterpoint to Liza Dalby's book Geisha (which I notice Downer does not reference even once in the writing, though it must surely have been on her mind). She also, herself, comes across as a great deal more pleasant than Dalby.

Fascinating
By Nyxie
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I purchased it at a supplemental reading item for my Japanese Literature class and was enthralled as soon as it showed up on my kindle homepage. I find the Geisha world fascinating and this book does a wonderful job of explaining how the geisha interact with female gaijin.

Best Economic Development Uni Textbook
By Peter
Bought this book for a university course I'm taking (ECN 303, economic development)> This book is clear and fairly concise considering the topic it's covering. This was the main textbook used by the teacher. It didn't seem to lack in any specific area but a general knowledge of how micro or macro economics works is handy for reading through this book. You can read it without much knowledge beforehand however there are certain areas where one may be lost. A simple google search though will assist with that. Pages are thin but print is good and it's not likely with care that any pages will rip out. No problem with any blotching effect from highlighters on the other side of the page of where i've highlighted.

Too repetitive
By Tess Van Do
I really don't like this book, why?
- Poor structure
- Repetitive Concept

You start reading the Contents and would think oh wow that will be a great read, once you start reading you feel like you are reading the same concept under different headlines,...)

But you will learn something out of it:
- models are well explained
- quantity over quality - apparently very important ;)

One of the few textbooks I wish I had bought rather than rented.
By Alexander David Fortune
As economics major, this book is relevant in someway to just about every one of my classes. Economic Development is the nitty, gritty field work of the subject, and this book helps bring that alive for the reader. It is one of the few textbooks I wish I had bought rather than rented.
