A Good Primer For Wedding Photography
By Scott D. Welch
Though I am not a "dummy" when it comes to digital photography, I have quite enjoyed several "...for Dummies" books for the simple reason that they are packed with information, in an easy to read format. "Digital Wedding Photography for Dummies" is no exception. In terms of wedding photography, I am not a pro, but have shot at weddings for friends and relatives as a back-up to their hired pro and captured, from comments I have received, some excellent shots (even back in the day with my trusty point-and-shoot, before I got into DSLR). Now I am toying with the idea of going pro and wanted to gain more perspective from people who are doing it. Author/Photographer Amber Murphy does a very good job in formatting the book and its contents.

As she says up front, you may not need to read all of it, just what you need to know at the time. That said, she starts off with the basics (like getting to know the future bride and groom to your gear selection) and guides you through what can be a stressful event if you are not fully prepared (like having extra battery packs with you, "just in case"). Covering topics such as various photographic styles, lighting, even editing photos after the event and how to present them to the couple is done with care and pretty good style. Again, easy to understand and follow throughout. Murphy finishes the book with creating a business plan, covering some of the legal basics and explaining various ways to grow your business which are logical and straightforward, however, being recently published it covers more areas than some, possibly even better - but older - wedding how-to books, making it more relevant to the times.

More advanced photographers may find redundant or already well-known information in this book (such as exposure, shutter speed, lighting), but there may also be a few morsels that are new. That, to me, makes these Dummies books particularly worthwhile. The shots she included in the book are not what I would call fantastic, but most were very good and I am sure the couples loved them. I did anticipate that there would be some more artistic type of shots, as well as a better variety of twilight and night time outdoors shots. Overall, Murphy did a good job with this book and it looks like I may just enter this field.

And it is well above the "Dummies" level (never liked the name anyway)
By Ronald Jones
This is really worth the money... if you are an amateur or enthusiast and are planning on informally shooting a wedding for a friend or family member, this is for you. And it is well above the "Dummies" level (never liked the name anyway). It is a good starting point to get you prepared to produce a worthy product, not a professional one but a very good one. You can move on to more complex books from here but, honestly, I would read this one first. It will probably be all you need unless you intend on going pro.

A great way to get ahead....
By Cat
I have always been interested in all that goes into photography for weddings! After ordering this book, and reading through it, I can honestly say that I have a new found appreciation for photographers that exemplify the quality photos like those that are found in this book. Amber is a great photographer and this is only the beginning of a legacy she will leave behind for many to follow in the upcoming years. This was an easy read, and extremely understandable for the "dummies" like myself! Well written and beautifully displayed!

Britt-Marie Was Here: A Novel, by Fredrik Backman

The New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry “returns with this heartwarming story about a woman rediscovering herself after a personal crisis…fans of Backman will find another winner in these pages” (Publishers Weekly).

Britt-Marie can’t stand mess. A disorganized cutlery drawer ranks high on her list of unforgivable sins. She is not one to judge others—no matter how ill-mannered, unkempt, or morally suspect they might be. It’s just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention.

But hidden inside the socially awkward, fussy busybody is a woman who has more imagination, bigger dreams, and a warmer heart that anyone around her realizes.

When Britt-Marie walks out on her cheating husband and has to fend for herself in the miserable backwater town of Borg—of which the kindest thing one can say is that it has a road going through it—she finds work as the caretaker of a soon-to-be demolished recreation center. The fastidious Britt-Marie soon finds herself being drawn into the daily doings of her fellow citizens, an odd assortment of miscreants, drunkards, layabouts. Most alarming of all, she’s given the impossible task of leading the supremely untalented children’s soccer team to victory. In this small town of misfits, can Britt-Marie find a place where she truly belongs?

Funny and moving, sweet and inspiring, Britt-Marie Was Here celebrates the importance of community and connection in a world that can feel isolating.

Review
"Readers seeking feel good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for 'Most Charming Book of the Year,' this first novel by a Swedish blogger turned overnight sensation would win hands down." (Booklist, Starred Review)

“A funny crowd pleaser that serves up laughs to accompany a thoughtful reflection on loss and love… The author writes with winning charm.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This charming debut novel by Backman should find a ready audience with English language readers… hysterically funny… wry descriptions, excellent pacing… In the contest of Most Winning Combination, it would be hard to beat grumpy Ove and his hidden, generous heart.” (Kirkus Reviews)

PRAISE FOR MY GRANDMOTHER ASKED ME TO TELL YOU SHE'S SORRY

“[…] Believable and fanciful. Backman’s smooth storytelling infuses his characters with charm and wit. . . Engaging. . . A delightful story.” (St. Louis Post Dispatch)

"Warm and satisfying." (People)

“Backman has written another bestseller with his latest novel. While at first Britt Marie seems intolerable and aggravating, readers are quickly endeared to her obsessive compulsive ways and frank honesty. At first the writing style comes off sharp; however, readers quickly see that is how Britt Marie processes the world and it too becomes something amicable. Heartfelt and truly stirring, Britt Marie Was Here resonates long after the last page is read.” (RT Magazine)

“The bestselling author of A MAN CALLED OVE returns with this heartwarming story about a woman rediscovering herself after personal crisis. Backman reveals Britt Marie’s need for order….with clear, tight descriptions. Insightful and touching, this is a sweet and inspiring story about truth and transformation. Fans of Backman’s will find another winner in these pages.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Universal...Backman hits a nice note between overly sweet and hard boiled fiction; excellent for book clubs." (Library Journal (starred review))

"Britt Marie’s metamorphosis from cocoon to butterfly seems all the more remarkable for the utterly discouraging environment in which it takes place." (Booklist)

“A brilliant mix of belly laughs, profound insight and captivating events delivered… with Backman's pitch perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature." (Shelf Awareness)

PRAISE FOR A MAN CALLED OVE

“A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” (People)

“Even the most serious reader of fiction needs light relief, and for that afternoon when all you want is charm, this is the perfect book." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"A light hearted, deeply moving novel about a grumpy but loveable curmudgeon who finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others—and an absolute delight." (CBS Local)

"An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks. A Man Called Ove is a perfect selection for book clubs. It's well written and replete with universal concerns. It lacks violence and profanity, is life affirming and relationship driven. The book is bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears. I contentedly wept my way through a box of tissues when I first read the novel and again when I savored it for a second time.” (BookBrowse.com)

"A Man Called Ove is exquisite. The lyrical language is the confetti thrown liberally throughout this celebration of life story, adding sparkle and color to an already spectacular party. Backman's characters feel so authentic that readers will likely find analogues living in their own neighborhoods." (Shelf Awareness (starred review))

“Every bit as churlish but lovable as Backman’s cantankerous protagonist in his debut, A Man Called Ove (2014), precocious Elsa will easily work her way into the hearts of readers who like characters with spunk to spare. A delectable homage to the power of stories to comfort and heal, Backman’s tender tale of the touching relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter is a tribute to the everlasting bonds of deep family ties.” (Booklist (starred))

“Firmly in league with Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman. A touching, sometimes funny, often wise portrait of grief.”

(Kirkus Reviews)

"In his second offering, Backman (A Man Called Ove) continues to write with the same whimsical charm and warm heart as in his debut." (Publishers Weekly)

"An eclectic cast of characters, fairy tale wisdom, and a little mystery… one of our favorite novels of the year so far." (SFGate.com)

Britt-Marie Was Here 1

Forks. Knives. Spoons.

In that order.

Britt-Marie is certainly not the kind of person who judges other people. Far from it.

But surely no civilized person would even think of arranging a cutlery drawer in a different way from how cutlery drawers are supposed to be arranged?

We’re not animals, are we?

It’s a Monday in January. She’s sitting at a desk in the unemployment office. Admittedly there’s no cutlery in sight, but it’s on her mind because it sums up everything that’s gone wrong recently. Cutlery should be arranged as it always has been, because life should go on unchanged. Normal life is presentable. In normal life you clean up the kitchen and keep your balcony tidy and take care of your children. It’s hard work—harder than one might think. In normal life you certainly don’t find yourself sitting in the unemployment office.

The girl who works here has staggeringly short hair, Britt-Marie thinks, like a man’s. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course—it’s modern, no doubt. The girl points at a piece of paper and smiles, evidently in a hurry.

“Just fill in your name, social security number, and address here, please.”

Britt-Marie has to be registered. As if she were a criminal. As if she has come to steal a job rather than find one.

“Milk and sugar?” the girl asks, pouring some coffee into a plastic mug.

Britt-Marie doesn’t judge anyone. Far from it. But who would behave like that? A plastic mug! Are we at war? She’d like to say just that to the girl, but because Kent is always urging Britt-Marie to “be more socially aware” she just smiles as diplomatically as she can and waits to be offered a coaster.

Kent is Britt-Marie’s husband. He’s an entrepreneur. Incredibly, incredibly successful. Has business dealings with Germany and is extremely, extremely socially aware.

The girl offers her two tiny disposable cartons of the sort of milk that doesn’t have to be kept in the fridge. Then she holds out a plastic mug with plastic teaspoons protruding from it. Britt-Marie could not have looked more startled if she’d been offered roadkill.

She shakes her head and brushes her hand over the table as if it was covered in invisible crumbs. There are papers everywhere, in any old order. The girl clearly doesn’t have time to tidy them up, Britt-Marie realizes—she’s probably far too busy with her career.

“Okay,” says the girl pleasantly, turning back to the form, “just write your address here.”

Britt-Marie fixes her gaze on her lap. She misses being at home with her cutlery drawer. She misses Kent, because Kent is the one who fills in all the forms.

When the girl looks like she’s about to open her mouth again, Britt-Marie interrupts her.

“You forgot to give me a coaster,” says Britt-Marie, smiling, with all the social awareness she can muster. “I don’t want to make marks on your table. Could I trouble you to give me something to put my . . . coffee cup on?”

She uses that distinctive tone, which Britt-Marie relies on whenever she has to summon all her inner goodness, to refer to it as a “cup” even though it is a plastic mug.

“Oh, don’t worry, just put it anywhere.”

As if life was as simple as that. As if using a coaster or organizing the cutlery drawer in the right order didn’t matter. The girl—who clearly doesn’t appreciate the value of coasters, or proper cups, or even mirrors, judging by her hairstyle—taps her pen against the paper, by the “address” box.

“But surely we can’t just put our cups on the table? That leaves marks on a table, surely you see that.”

The girl glances at the surface of the desk, which looks as if toddlers have been trying to eat potatoes off it. With pitchforks. In the dark.

“It really doesn’t matter; it’s so old and scratched up already!” she says with a smile.

Britt-Marie is screaming inside.

“I don’t suppose you’ve considered that it’s because you don’t use coasters,” she mutters, not at all in a “passive-aggressive” way, which is how Kent’s children once described her when they thought she wasn’t listening. Britt-Marie is not actually passive-aggressive. She’s considerate. After she heard Kent’s children saying she was passive-aggressive she was extra considerate for several weeks.

The unemployment office girl looks a little strained. “Okay . . . what did you say your name was? Britt, right?”

“Britt-Marie. Only my sister calls me Britt.”

“Okay, Britt-Marie, if you could just fill in the form. Please.”

Britt-Marie peers at the paper, which requires her to give assurances about where she lives and who she is. An unreasonable amount of paperwork is required these days just to be a human being. A preposterous amount of administration for society to let one take part. In the end she reluctantly fills in her name, social security number, and her cell phone number. The address box is left empty.

“What’s your educational background, Britt-Marie?”

Britt-Marie squeezes her handbag.

“I’ll have you know that my education is excellent.”

“But no formal education?”

“For your information, I solve an enormous number of crosswords. Which is not the sort of thing one can do without an education.”

She takes a very small gulp of the coffee. It doesn’t taste like Kent’s coffee at all. Kent makes very good coffee. Everyone says so. Britt-Marie takes care of the coasters and Kent takes care of the coffee.

“Okay . . . what sort of life experience do you have?”

“My latest employment was as a waitress. I had outstanding references.”

The girl looks hopeful. “And when was that?”

“Nineteen seventy-eight.”

“Ah . . . and you haven’t worked since then?”

“I have worked every day since then. I’ve helped my husband with his company.”

Again the girl looks hopeful. “And what sorts of tasks did you perform in the company?”

“I took care of the children and saw to it that our home was presentable.”

The girl smiles to hide her disappointment, as people do when they don’t have the ability to distinguish between “a place to live” and “a home.” It’s actually thoughtfulness that makes the difference. Because of thoughtfulness there are coasters and proper coffee cups and beds that are made so tightly in the mornings that Kent jokes with his acquaintances about how, if you stumble on the threshold on your way into the bedroom, there’s “a smaller risk of breaking your leg if you land on the floor than the bedspread.” Britt-Marie loathes it when he talks that way. Surely civilized people lift their feet when they walk across bedroom thresholds?

Whenever Britt-Marie and Kent go away, Britt-Marie sprinkles the mattress with baking soda for twenty minutes before she makes the bed. The baking soda absorbs dirt and humidity, leaving the mattress much fresher. Baking soda helps almost everything, in Britt-Marie’s experience. Kent usually complains about being late; Britt-Marie clasps her hands together over her stomach and says: “I absolutely must be allowed to make the bed before we leave, Kent. Just imagine if we die!”

This is the actual reason why Britt-Marie hates traveling. Death. Not even baking soda has any effect on death. Kent says she exaggerates, but people do actually drop dead all the time when they’re away, and what would the landlord think if they had to break down the door only to find an unclean mattress? Surely they’d conclude that Kent and Britt-Marie lived in their own dirt?

The girl checks her watch.

“Okay,” she says.

Britt-Marie feels her tone has a note of criticism in it.

“The children are twins and we have a balcony. It’s more work than you think, having a balcony.”

The girl nods tentatively.

“How old are your children?”

“Kent’s children. They’re thirty.”

“So they’ve left home?”

“Obviously.”

“And you’re sixty-three years old?”

“Yes,” says Britt-Marie dismissively, as if this was highly irrelevant.

The girl clears her throat as if, actually, it’s very relevant indeed.

“Well, Britt-Marie, quite honestly, because of the financial crisis and all that, I mean, there’s a scarcity of jobs for people in your . . . situation.”

The girl sounds a bit as if “situation” was not her first choice as a way of concluding the sentence. Britt-Marie smiles patiently.

“Kent says that the financial crisis is over. He’s an entrepreneur, you must understand. So he understands these kind of things, which are possibly a little outside your field of competence.”

The girl blinks for an unnecessary amount of time. Checks her watch. She seems uncomfortable, which vexes Britt-Marie. She quickly decides to give the girl a compliment, just to show her goodwill. She looks around the room for something to compliment her about, and finally manages to say, with as generous a smile as she can muster:

“You have a very modern hairstyle.”

“What? Oh. Thanks,” she replies, her fingertips moving self-consciously towards her scalp.

“It’s very courageous of you to wear your hair so short when you have such a large forehead.”

Why does the girl look offended? Britt-Marie wonders. Clearly that’s what happens when you try to be sociable towards young people these days. The girl rises from her chair.

“Thanks for coming, Britt-Marie. You are registered in our database. We’ll be in touch!”

She holds out her hand to say good-bye. Britt-Marie stands up and places the plastic mug of coffee in her hand.

“When?”

“Well, it’s difficult to say.”

“I suppose I’m supposed to just sit and wait,” counters Britt-Marie with a diplomatic smile, “as if I didn’t have anything better to do?”

The girl swallows.

“Well, my colleague will be in touch with you about a jobseekers’ training course, an—”

“I don’t want a course. I want a job.”

“Absolutely, but it’s difficult to say when something will turn up. . . .”

Britt-Marie takes a notebook from her pocket.

“Shall we say tomorrow, then?”

“What?”

“Could something turn up tomorrow?”

The girl clears her throat.

“Well, it could, or I’d rather . . .”

Britt-Marie gets a pencil from her bag, eyes the pencil with some disapproval, and then looks at the girl.

“Might I trouble you for a pencil sharpener?” she asks.

“A pencil sharpener?” asks the girl, as if she had been asked for a thousand-year-old magical artifact.

“I need to put our meeting on the list.”

Some people don’t understand the value of lists, but Britt-Marie is not one of those people. She has so many lists that she has to keep a separate list to list all the lists. Otherwise anything could happen. She could die. Or forget to buy baking soda.

The girl offers her a pen and says something to the effect of, “Actually I don’t have time tomorrow,” but Britt-Marie is too busy peering at the pen to hear what she’s saying.

“Surely we can’t write lists in ink?” she bursts out.

“That’s all I’ve got.” The girl says this with some finality. “Is there anything else I can help you with today, Britt-Marie?”

“Ha,” Britt-Marie responds after a moment.

Britt-Marie often says that. “Ha.” Not as in “ha-ha” but as in “aha,” spoken in a particularly disappointed tone. Like when you find a wet towel thrown on the bathroom floor.

“Ha.” Immediately after saying this, Britt-Marie always firmly closes her mouth, to emphasize this is the last thing she intends to say on the subject. Although it rarely is the last thing.

The girl hesitates. Britt-Marie grasps the pen as if it’s sticky. Looks at the list marked “Tuesday” in her notebook, and, at the top, above “Cleaning” and “Shopping,” she writes “Unemployment office to contact me.”

She hands back the pen.

“It was very nice to meet you,” says the girl robotically. “We’ll be in touch!”

“Ha,” says Britt-Marie with a nod.

Britt-Marie leaves the unemployment office. The girl is obviously under the impression that this is the last time they’ll meet, because she’s unaware of how scrupulously Britt-Marie sticks to her lists. Clearly the girl has never seen Britt-Marie’s balcony.

It’s an astonishingly, astonishingly presentable balcony.

It’s January outside, a winter chill in the air but no snow on the ground—below freezing without any evidence of it being so. The very worst time of year for balcony plants.

After leaving the unemployment office, Britt-Marie goes to a supermarket that is not her usual supermarket, where she buys everything on her list. She doesn’t like shopping on her own, because she doesn’t like pushing the shopping cart. Kent always pushes the shopping cart while Britt-Marie walks at his side and holds on to a corner of it. Not because she’s trying to steer, only that she likes holding on to things while he is also holding on to them. For the sake of that feeling they are going somewhere at the same time.

She eats her dinner cold at exactly six o’clock. She’s used to sitting up all night waiting for Kent, so she tries to put his portion in the fridge. But the only fridge here is full of very small bottles of alcohol. She lowers herself onto a bed that isn’t hers, while rubbing her ring finger, a habit she falls into when she’s nervous.

A few days ago she was sitting on her own bed, spinning her wedding ring, after cleaning the mattress extra carefully with baking soda. Now she’s rubbing the white mark on her skin where the ring used to be.

The building has an address, but it’s certainly neither a place to live nor a home. On the floor are two rectangular plastic boxes for balcony flowers, but the hostel room doesn’t have a balcony. Britt-Marie has no one to sit up all night waiting for.

But she sits up anyway.

Britt-Marie was Here is the best book I've read this year
By Susanne S.
Britt-Marie was Here is the best book I've read this year. Simply put, it is fantastic.

Britt-Marie is difficult, frustrating and socially awkward. She is also insensitive and kind of rude. A minor character in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, Britt-Marie was instantly disliked in that book and is not well liked in the beginning of this one either. However, Fredrik Backman has this endearing way of making old curmudgeons likeable and being extremely successful at it (i.e. Ove and Britt-Marie). Her character, her ocd, her social ineptitude.. they grow on you. Here, we find out why she is the way she is and we discover that, due to her childhood and her marriage, she has felt invisible her whole life. She has trouble figuring out who she really is and is fanatical simply because it is the only thing she can control. Upon losing everything, she decides to find a job and is forced to move to a small town. In the process she finds a sense of humor, discovers that she is capable of making friends and also finds her sense of self.

Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove was one of my favorite books ever. His writing style is smart, funny, quirky and just downright amazing. His characters are rich, well developed and beloved. In addition to Britt-Marie, Vega, Somebody, Bank, Sami and "the girl from the unemployment office" lent heart and soul to the story and gave Britt-Marie exactly what she needed: friends and reasons to go have at it.

I didn't think it was possible for Mr. Backman to write another book that I'd love as much as "Ove" but if truth be told, I love this one more. It was truly phenomenal.

STARTS SLOW, THEN GAINS TRACTION.
By Charlotte Vale-Allen
This book starts off like one of those irritating Amelia Bedelia creations for kids: a dolt at the forefront who is so literal that she invariably messes up anything she touches. But then ... not too far in, Britt-Marie begins to acquire dimensions and, even more important, she evolves into a truly sympathetic character. A woman who's been put down in one way or another for her entire life, of course she comforts herself (and rewards others) by cleaning everything in sight, making the view of her immediate world acceptable, even pleasing. Having accepted a job overseeing the recreation center in a financially devastated town, without actually trying, her presence begins to make itself felt. At the core of it all is the local children's passion for soccer--a game about which she knows nothing. It's quite an accomplishment for author Backman to make us care about all the characters in this novel. And we do care - particularly about Britt-Marie who scarcely knows herself after a childhood with an uncaring mother and decades of marriage to a dismissive, controlling man. By the halfway mark, we're rooting for her and for the children, and for the local policeman who's taken a shine to this woman.

This was my introduction to Fredrik Backman. I intend to read his other books because I was so taken and so touched by the townful of well-conceived characters he brought to life and about whom he made me care.
RECOMMENDED.

Another Hit for Fredrik Backman
By bert1761
Britt-Marie, the most curmudgeonly of characters from "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry," leaves her cheating husband and looks desperately for a job during the "economic crisis." All that she appears able to find is a position as a caretaker for a recreational facility in a town practically decimated by this crisis.Nevertheless, despite her initially cantakerous disposition and the lack of many residents in the town of Borg, Britt-Marie makes friends with some unusual (to say the least) characters and becomes not just the caretaker of the facility but the emotional caretaker of the children who hang out and play soccer at the rec center. Over the course of the novel, Britt-Marie grows from a nearly insufferable crank to a thoughtful. warm-hearted woman.

"Britt-Marie Was Here" is another success for Fredrik Backman. It is every bit a good and funny as the wonderful "A Man Called Ove" and is more enjoyable than "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry." I look forward to reading whatever this delightful author produces next.

Excellent text--but without excellent exercises
By Ben Logan
This book is a fine companion to Jennings' A Python Primer for ArcGIS. In fact, it's kind of hard to buy one without the other. Together they make one book. I would recommend that, if you're a visual learner driven to absorb concepts, start with Zandbergen then dig into Jennings' for some really fine exercises and coding practices. However, if you're a tactile learner (like me), get under the hood and get your hands dirty with Jennings. Get to where you can comfortably do these exercises. And then dive into the why's and wherefore's behind them in the Zandbergen text.

Yes, I am a "shoot first, and ask questions later" type of guy. Jennings' text lets me dive in. But Zandbergen's is a well-written text that covers a number of tools beyond what Jennings treats. Zandbergen's exercises, in accompanying .pdf's, are--not very good. But I keep both books on my desk.

One of the best book for introduction of ArcPy
By Amazon Customer
This is rare book because most of the parts in ArcPy is covered. You can learn from how to set up python environment to how to create your own toolbox. Even after you read through this book, you can use this book as encyclopedia for ArcPy.
The only one problem is monotonicity. Through chapters, the author show the code without any real-world analysis. So you may feel boring at the middle of this book. To avoid falling into such a pitfall, I recommend you to pull the real data from the web and apply it to the codes shown in this book.

Finally, As is clear from the tittle, this book is exclusively for the people who are using ArcGIS, not for people who wanna conduct geospatial analysis by using python. If you don't have or don't plan to use ArcGIS, this book is not useful.

Great for Classroom or self learning
By Gregory A. Newkirk
Paul Zandbergen has filled a badly needed void with this book. For you college instructors who have been looking for a text to teach an ArcPy course, this is it. It has 14 chapters and accompanying labs. For the self learner, the book is quite accessible both in layout and content.

Paul has a thorough understanding of ArcPy and Python and he does a marvelous job teaching the basics and providing some useful inside tips. He is also comprehensive and thorough. For the instructor, you will need to get your lab up to ArcGIS 10.1. For the self-learner, the text comes with a 6-month license along withe data and labs.

No need to wait any longer. This is the text for learning ArcPy and now is the time.

"It's as savvy, informative, and entertaining as anything you are likely to read on the subject. Client/server isn't one technology but many —remote SQL, TP, message-oriented groupware, distributed objects, and so on. Like the proverbial blind men feeling the elephant, most of us have a hard time seeing the whole picture. The authors succeed brilliantly in mapping the elephant." —Jon Udell, Byte

"Winner, Jolt Product Excellence Award." —Software Development magazine

"The scope and depth of topics covered in the Guide, with its straightforward and often humorous delivery, make this book required reading for anyone who deals with computers in today's corporate environment." —Bob Gallagher, PC Week

"Absolutely the finest book on client/server on the market today. It's got great advice, and is well-written and fun to read." —Richard Finkelstein, President of Performance Computing

The critics agree—this is the best source for anyone looking to understand and make informed decisions about client/server technology. In this Second Edition of their award-winning book, authors Orfali, Harkey, and Edwards combine detailed technical explanations with their unique brand of offbeat humor, using clever cartoons, controversial soapboxes, and witty quotes to inform, educate, and entertain.

This information-packed Survival Guide takes you on a sweeping tour of the world of client/server. From operating systems and communications, to application architectures that incorporate database, transaction processing, groupware and objects, to the Internet and the World Wide Web and their role in the new generation of client/server and object management, this book covers it all.

Best written & organized computer I've read yet!
By Traderjohn
The is the first time I've taken the time to write a review - and for a technology book 2 years out of date! I love the style and organization. This is a lot of very relevent information packed into 600 pages that will give anyone new to client/server architectures a great understanding of the market(s). Take a look at the table of Contents to see what I mean. And trust me, it's not ..For Dummies drivel. The author's "soapboxes" (mostly predictions) are great reading for where they were right on (most of the time) and just close (e.g. CORBA). I can't wait for a new edition to address XML in all of it's flavors.

A nostalgic look at life before intranets
By Timothy Walker
I recently picked this book up second-hand and found it to be a quite enjoyable read. I only wish it was current, for the modern marketplace needs more books like it.
Rather than focus on a particular vendor's products or certification exam, the authors explain the big picture of client/server networking in an acronym-rich format that only a "big iron" programmer could love. Exhaustive coverage of database systems, groupware, and transaction processing are also presented, elaborated on by silly cartoons reminiscent of Greg Perry's early work.
Alas, times have changed. "Cairo" is obsolete now, and OS/2 did not provide the panacea to every client/server ill. I would strongly suggest that any reader of this review obtain a copy of the much newer third edition (ISBN: 0471316156). I certainly will.

The encyclopedia of client server technology
By Drew Henderson
The definitive encyclopedia of the morass of technology called client server. This book is not very detailed but is methodical in its approach to explaining this vast technology in laymen's terms. Crammed with acronyms and specific product details, this book serves as an indispensable resource for technology managers of medium to large corporations who undoubtedly are confronted with making decisions about client/server, LAN's and WAN's. This is an excellent reference for individuals chartered with constructing an Intranet or Extranet with connections to legacy systems and databases. This is also a great starting point for students interested in computer science or programming and system maintenance persons working with LAN's and WAN's. Keep watching for new editions of this book because the technology changes rapidly and books of this nature have a relatively short shelf life.

Review
"I have looked over other books that try to deliver what [Becoming a Master Student] delivers, and none of them have the combination and presentation of materials put together as well as this one. I believe I've used four or five editions of this text in class, and, even having grown very familiar and comfortable with it, I still find new angles on traditional concepts that I can help students grasp more effectively. I believe the organization and presentation of ideas and concepts in this text helps me discover these new angles or perspectives on concepts and ideas."

"The key strengths of Becoming a Master Student include variety, great supportive ancillary materials, and activities that students can relate to, like, and enjoy."

Ehh...
By Genevieve duMont
First off, and most importantly, I wouldn't rent this as an E-Book if at all possible, ESPECIALLY if you're using it for a class. There are a lot of exercises on the book that require you to write inside the book itself, and having to print out a page, or find some way to get around not being able to physically manipulate the text is frustrating. Get the physical copy if you can.

Second of all, the book itself is pretty pointless if you have a good sense of self-awareness. For the everyday individual, most of this is common knowledge and this book ends up being little more than pages of busy work with only the occasional spark that comes with finding something new. Considering that this book is almost 80 dollars to buy, that's incredibly annoying.

However, if you haven't been in school for a while, or you aren't really sure of where you stand as a student, this might be a good buy. Not only does the text book go over things like how to study, how to manage time, and how to keep goals, but it also goes over things like suicide prevention, sexual health, and how to manage money.

Regardless, pretty much everyone whose buying this book is buying it because they have to, so none of the above really matters.

Great read, lots of useful info, but essentially assumes you have mom and dad paying for everything.
By D. Bryan
After five years of college,I found the irony of taking this first year the college orientation class at the end of college amusing. I have to say that there much of this book seemed like common sense I already learned in other classes. HOWEVER, there are gems of information and ideas that would have been really useful in my own schooling that make it well worth the read for anyone starting secondary education.

The only thing that I did not like about this book is that the tone of the book assumes the reader is a college student with all the free time and resources in the world to get through school. Yes, internships and extracurricular activities are options but but let's be real here. Most of us will be working through school and will barely have time for anything but school and work. The advice for actually for sustainably paying for school is nonexistent even though there is an entire chapter related to money.

A great resource for adults returning to college.
By Jack H.
I am returning to school in the fall, having been out for some time I feel that this text is going to be an invaluable resource. After skimming through the book, I have already stumbled across some great tips that I am anxious to dive into deeper. While it may seem annoying that you cannot rent this book or purchase a used one for the class you are taking, keep in mind that there are assignments in this book that you directly hand in to your professor. I chose the loose leaf version because it was MUCH cheaper than the bound paperback version. I purchased a 1" binder with a D-ring and it fit perfectly.

Same as 3rd Edition
By Ernest P.
This was required material for my Programming Logic class. This book is 98% identical to the 3rd edition. The review questions, debugging exercises and programming exercises are all the same! There were a few words or sentences added to the chapter content, but it is essentially unchanged.

The content of the textbook itself is pretty solid and helpful for gaining an understanding of how to design an algorithm. I plan to keep a copy for personal reference. The pseudocode structure takes a bit of time to get used to, and will likely be the cornerstone of your curriculum. My class had the opportunity to translate our pseudocode into Python, which proved to be quite challenging.

The books uses psudeocode for examples i.e. fake code. I understand that the focus of the book is on the general concepts of programming but it seems to me that these concepts could just as easily be learned with examples from an actual programming language(s). It would be more practical that way.
