He claims his methods can be applied universally, but I'm not so sure.
By bookwormthemillionth
I had heard a lot of people rave about this book before I finally picked it up and decided to read it for myself. I'm glad that I read it, but I don't think it was quite as life-changing for me as it was for some of my friends. Don't get me wrong, Ferriss makes some excellent points and he's got some really great tips and tricks in here, I'm just not sure how universal they really are.

First of all, when I picked up the book, I didn't expect that he was literally working only four hours a week. I thought he was just talking about ways to spend less time working, but that "The 4-Hour" just sounded good (since he now has a whole line of books with titles that start that way). Nope. Turns out he really only worked four hours every week for a few years. I hate him. Now, with his series of books and everything, that's not true so much, so I hate him less. Now his job is much more similar to what I actually want to do.

As I said, Ferriss has some great ways of eliminating clutter and busywork, including things you don't even think of as busywork. I've already started implementing some of these tips at work, and they've come in pretty handy so far. I keep meaning to get rid of a bunch of my physical clutter, but my laziness keeps getting in the way of that. I'll get around to it in the next few weeks.

I also appreciated his philosophy of taking mini-retirements throughout life, rather than one long retirement at the end of life. I never did understand the point of retirement, so Ferriss's plan sounds much more appealing to me. As he put it, retirement should be nothing more than a fail-safe in case something happens and you are physically (or mentally) incapable of working. My thoughts exactly.

My main problem with his philosophy is that it really only works if you have a product that you are not actually making, but that you can sell. For example, even if I were to quit my day job and write all day every day, I would still be working a lot. Granted, that would make my job a whole lot more portable, but I could never get away with only working four hours per week (at least not until after I sell that bestselling novel, which is such a realistic plan!) In order to do it his way, I would need to have something that is already produced, or that someone else is making (clothes, dietary supplement, etc.) where all I have to do is collect the money that comes in from those sales.

Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds. His ways of eliminating the useless from his life are really quite impressive, and not to be underestimated, but I still wonder if someone in their twenties, who is just starting out in life, can really make his plan work? Some of his success stories include people negotiating working remotely, because they have built up value in their company. Someone who has only been working at their current job for a year or two does not have the kind of leverage necessary to do that.

Additionally, he talks about the trick to getting out of your job so you can go have that great once-in-a-lifetime adventure. He mentions considering the worst-case scenario and the fact that worst-case is not necessarily all that bad. One of his points he brings up is that, if he loses his job, he can get another one fairly easily. Well, great for him, but the original book was written before the job market collapsed, followed by this lovely "jobless recovery". I was recently unemployed for eight months and it was not fun. I, too, thought I could get another job within a few months, but that did not turn out to be the case. So, if I go spend all my money on a mini-retirement now, and then come back only to find that I can't get a job for another year, I'll be screwed. Yes, even that worst-case scenario isn't that bad. I could always move back in with my parents, but I'd really rather not. I love them, but they have enough to deal with right now, and the last thing I want to do is burden the people around me because I decided to go globe-trotting for a few months. Timothy Ferriss told me it would be fine!

You might have to do some interpretation but ...
By Melanie Barnes
I saw a lot of reviews regarding the applicability of his advice. I will say that his tone is a pretty over the top (hence 4 and not 5 stars,) but he has some really great points. I mostly appreciate the point that you should aim to make enough money to live comfortably, doing the things that you love, and not necessarily just aim to make as much money as possible or work as hard as possible. Replace "sitting in a private jet flying over the Himalayas" with "sitting at my son's soccer game, cheering him on" or whatever it is that you want to do with your time, and his advice feels more applicable to everyone.

The concept of diversifying your income is a great one - you just have to make it your own. I first read this book several years ago, while I was still in the service, and realized that I had the possibility to apply his advice. I had bought a house, and decided I would pay it off as soon as I could so that when I transitioned out of the military it wouldn't be a liability. Instead, it's an income. It's paid off, and I rent it out. It's not enough to live on entirely, but that's not the point. It enables me to work part time and still pay my bills, while going to school for a career change. If I hadn't done that, I would have to work full time, which would leave me no time for relationships and other life-balancing things. It's not about making the big bucks, it's about making enough to enable the life you want to live. And that's a really cool idea.

There's a Sucker Born Everyday ( MUST READ BEFORE PURCHASING!)
By Danny Lee
The title and cover draws people in. 4 Hour Work Week, it's too good to be true. Then we read the first couple of pages, maybe the first couple of chapters. The first chapters are the typical motivational, "you can do it" montage. I'm not going to lie, I felt motivated to give this book a try after reading the first part of the book without even knowing what this book is all about. But as I began to get out of the fluff, and actually found myself reading the core subject of the book, I was utterly disappointed.

D is for Definition

In this section Ferriss tells us to do an important task: define what you want. And I agree that most of us live through life not knowing what we want; just following the crowd like a herd of sheep. This section was the motivational, make you feel good section. This wasn't the how, it was the why, and it downright made me pumped.

E is for Elimination
Okay, so he basically says to eliminate all the junk in your life. For example: watch less TV, don't check your e-mail 50 times a day, don't look at your phone 100 times a day, don't surf the web 3 hours a day, etc. It's all good advice, nothing too fancy, or new, just plain old, "don't waste your time" advice. So far so good.

A is for automation
This is where I ran in to problems with Tim's method of creating a "4 hour workweek". First he tells us to outsource a big chunk of our lives using a VA (virtual assistant) from India or Shanghai or wherever. Basically a virtual assistant is a person who assist you in everyday task (checking emails, making reservations, doing research for your job that you got hired to do,set up appointments, etc) so basically an online-personal assistant you hire for dirt cheap. So if you are okay with some guy in India knowing your personal information (SSN, bank account number, phobias, any illnesses you might have, problems in life, and many more as Ferriss states) go ahead and outsource the things you can already do yourself to a guy in India you never met. But Ferris says that misuses of sensitive information are rare; well there could be bias behind that statement, but I'm not willing to find out if it's true or not. The irony of oustourcing your life is that you become dependent on your VA. You no longer have the urge to take control of your own life when it comes to paying bills, making reservations, or doing research for your job because your VA does it for you. So that's the paradox: out source your life, but become more dependent on a foreigner. And Ferriss quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson throughout his book as a motivational spice. But it's apparent that he never read "Self Reliance", the cornerstone of Emerson's philosophy. (Tim if you're going to use Emerson's words, how about not making a book that totally contradicts the philosophy of Emerson? Thanks).

A is for automation Pt. 2
Ferriss then goes on to tell us how we can make up to 40,000 dollars a month of automated income (little work). Basically you create a product and sell it. Plain and simple. He tells you to find a market, find the demographics of your product, make a product and sell it. Yup, your average entrepreneurship. It's nothing new, and Ferris is not an expert entrepreneur. He did have a company BrainQuicken which sells "Neural Accelerator" supplements. The site is 99% advertising and 1% scientific: It sells because it's precisely that. And the product that Ferriss started is not something revolutionary, I'll take my 200mg of caffeine before a workout any day than pay 50.00 dollars plus shipping for BrainQuicken. So if you want to make your own product, market it, sell it and make millions of dollars go ahead. Tim tells you exactly how, but what Tim doesn't tell you is that it takes a lot of work in the beginning, a lot more than 4 hours a week.

L is for Liberation
More like L is for not showing up to work, and being cynical. Now I'm against the 9-5 hours of work. I think that human beings are more efficient enough to get things done in a short period of time, and I believe that society is slowly catching on. But here's Tim's idea of "liberation". Escaping the office: not doing your job or worse, not showing up. Killing your job: quit your job. Mini retirement: take a month vacation every 2 months of work (or pattern that works best for you). Filling the Void: filling in the emptiness and the boredom you feel with fun stuff like becoming a horse archer, learning tango, and winning a fight championship by cheating.
So okay, let's say everything goes well: you are making 40,000 dollars a month, you are working no more than 4 hours a week... now what. Even Ferriss says that you will feel a void... well that sucks doesn't it? Why don't you go and talk to your VA about your problems?

Now obviously I'm against Tim's advertising methods, it's misleading. The book only sells because of the hope it gives 9-5 workers that it's possible. Oh, it's possible but unlikely. Tim is no Bil Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, or Clint Eastwood he is nowhere close to them. You see great testimonials from people from Yahoo!, Wired, Silicon Valley, and hell, from Jack Canfield about Tim's book, but not from people like Gates, Jobs, Buffett, Eastwood, or any other highly successful people, why? Because those four know that true success comes from years of hard work, and building lasting relationships with people. Those four know that decreasing your work hours, outsourcing your life, and making a tons of money is not the road to true happiness. Those four people, even if they read this book, will probably throw it in the fire. But for the cynical, "how do I work little and make tons of money" people out there (which is most of the population) this book will initially look like the next Bible. The fact that this book sold well says a lot about our society.

This is a misleading book, there are tons of other great books you can read for true success: Talent is Overrated (no BS way how people become great at what they do), 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (classic), and How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People... to name a few. Very few will read this review before buying, and more copies of this book will sell due to the cynical and lazy nature of people. Don't be one of those people, don't buy this book.

Nursing School Books are required and are chosen carefully! I am an RN now so they worked well :)
By Allfruit
This book was required for my nursing school - BSN program. I feel the selection of books my program chose were all very informative, to the point and we used the books for the classes that required them. During nursing school most people do not know where their career will take them, there are so many options the RN has available, so building a strong foundation is essential to success in the field. Nursing books are not written to be entertaining they are for educational purpose only. This book definitely offered education. After you graduate school and chose a path then find the best reference book you can find and carry it with you until the day you retire. I always recommend the additional study guide to a book if one is available.

Absolute worst
By alshaw2009
This is the worst textbook I have ever experienced. Every time I'm forced to open it I make sure to clear my desk of any and all objects that could be used to gouge my eyes out. I read the reviews before I bought it and thought people were just being whiney, but no...it really is THAT bad. Horribly written, hard to understand, repeats itself, hard to follow, etc.

I take great pity on you if you were forced to buy it like I was.

Hopefully it burns better than it reads. I plan on having a bonfire when this class ends.

By Kendra Indeed
Yikes. After a week the entire class abandoned this book. And by entire class, I mean the teacher too. She says she won't use it again. It did burn nicely though. Probably bad for the health of the community, but I wouldn't know because this book didn't tell me.
But seriously, the order of content didn't work for our accelerated program. And this goes for the newer addition too, which is what most of the class had.

A Million Little Things (Mischief Bay series, Book 3), by Susan Mallery

[Read by Tanya Eby]

From the bestselling author of The Girls of Mischief Bay and The Friends We Keep comes a twisty tale of family dynamics that explores what can go terribly, hysterically wrong when the line between friendship and family blurs …

Zoe Saldivar is more than just single -- she's alone. She recently broke up with her longtime boyfriend, she works from home and her best friend Jen is so obsessed with her baby that she has practically abandoned their friendship. The day Zoe accidentally traps herself in her attic with her hungry-looking cat, she realizes that it's up to her to stop living in isolation.

Her seemingly empty life takes a sudden turn for the complicated -- her first new friend is Jen's widowed mom, Pam. The only guy to give her butterflies in a very long time is Jen's brother. And meanwhile, Pam is being very deliberately seduced by Zoe's own smooth-as-tequila father. Pam's flustered, Jen's annoyed, and Zoe is beginning to think ''alone'' doesn't sound so bad, after all.

Friendship isn't just one thing -- it's a million little things, and no one writes them with more heart and humor than book club sensation Susan Mallery.

I Adore This Book!
By LuvBooks
Oh, how I love this book. It's funny, but reviewer Jeannie Autry already said pretty much what I planned to say; that my favorite Susan Mallery book was "The Girls of Mischief Bay," and that this book, I love just as much. I adore every single character, even naughty older Lucas (not that I care for his dating young women, though) and that there isn't one character I dislike. That's rare, to love every single character, in a book which is loaded with them (they are characters in more ways than one).

Even the two pet dogs are adorable personalities. I want a Chinese Crested!!!

The point is that I'm only just past the halfway point in this book, and every day I'm so glued to it that I have to literally stop myself from reading it so quickly...it would have been finished in at most two days otherwise. I'm trying to make it last (ha ha ha) a week. Not gonna happen.

How anyone could have given "A Million Little Things" only one star is mind-boggling. It makes no sense at all for such a great book. No wonder only one person gave it one star.

Buy this book! You won't be disappointed!

Fabulous! This should be a Hallmark Channel Series "Girls of Mischief Bay"
By Jeannie Autry
Susan Mallery has written another outstanding heartfelt believable story in this series. I think this was my favorite. It was about family and friendships. It was funny and romantic even with the everyday stresses of life. The story kept me engaged from page to page and I could not put it down until I finished. Even then, I did not want to leave the presence of these endearing characters, Zoe & Steven, Jen & Kirk, Pam & Miguel and I think my favorite new man (what a man) Lucas! Even though I thought I would go crazy being around Jen myself, I was so happy that she was finally able to recognize her weakness and find the road to recovery. Her son Jack is so adorable and even her husband Kirk managed to hang in there. Yep, it was a million little things going on and we had the opportunity to see these characters make it through each crisis with strength and weaknesses exposed and learn to forgive and move forward. Oh yeah, and with a little help from friends and family as most of us do.

I 'm a guy who was bored...
By W R WITTE
I have read so many of the very popular typical bestsellers, the whodunit, spy and espionage, and history genres, so I went to Amazon to just PERUSE the best sellers. I saw this book listed with high ratings.

From the reviews I gathered that it was very definitely a ladies genre, but I said 'what the heck, what is it that my wife discusses with all the ladies when they go to their book clubs?'

So I bought the book and Unbelievably I read it every chance I got, and I almost had a panic attack when I realized I was reading the last page. Within seconds I was on the Amazon website and found the author and realized that this is series of stories: so I purchased book # 1 and I am now a fan, and I think I will be able to understand more about what makes the ladies tick!

I am thankfully hooked!!!!!

I love this book
By Nathan
I love this book. The book is well written, concise, and very easy to follow. Explanations and examples are very good. I also love how the author constantly refers to previous equations and calculations and does not pull them out from nowhere (like how some other authors like to do, which can be confusing). This really helps with connecting concepts and previously learned material from other related courses and previous chapters in the book. If I had known, I would have bought more books from the author of this book.

"Hands on" Matrix Analysis of Structures
By Isadore
This book is a must for a structural engineer who wants to have a better understanding of how computers are used to perform structural analysis. The author explains precisely how computers are used to analyze 2D and 3D trusses, beams, frames, and grids in a language a working engineer can understand. This book has the reader participate in the process of understanding matrix analysis of structures by supplying flowcharts and examples that are accurate and easy to understand.
Also, the author discusses the flexibility and stiffness methods as well as finite-element formulation using virtual work to explain matrix structural analysis. And what I like about this book the most is the fact that the author explains in a step-by-step manner precisely how to write and test a working matrix structural analysis program in any computer programming language.

What needs to be said? If you like Zelda then why hesitate? Something that great about this other than Zelda is, the material is strong, it doesn't rip, unless you intentionally rip it of course. The images on throughout the calendar are perfect. Like I said if you like Zelda, get it. It is worth it.

Catching Up With Gandhi, by Graham Turner

In a world in thrall to money, how does one recapture the essence and unveil the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi this man who espoused poverty but whose face is now, ironically, on every Indian bank note? What better than to follow in his footsteps, to visit the places which meant most to him and to talk with some of the people who knew him best? That is what Graham Turner decided to do, often in company with two of Gandhi s grandchildren, Rajmohan in India and Ela in South Africa. He went to the childhood homes of both Gandhi and his wife Kastur in Porbandar and visited the former British Residency in Rajkot from which Gandhi was unceremoniously ejected by one of the Raj s servants. The author stood in the modest court room in Ahmedabad where Gandhi was found guilty of sedition by that same Raj and ventured into the prisons to which Gandhi was so often consigned. Turner walked along the beach at Juhu where the Mahatma went to recuperate, and talked with Rajmohan at Birla House in New Delhi where his grandfather was assassinated. The result is both a fascinating journey and a candid and immensely readable portrait of the man who, with all his well-documented foibles and weaknesses, not only led his country to freedom but also lit up the world with his life and ideas.

Though I have read numerous biographies of Gandhi, this one was my favorite. The book did an outstanding job of avoiding hagiography and really let the reader know the human sacrifices Gandhi made to achieve his objectives. And if there was one human quality that was echoed over and over it was Gandhi's perseverance. The book was also very easy to read and extremely interesting in revealing many new facts which I previously did not know.

The title of this book, Commercial Bank Financial Management in the Financial-Services Industry, captures its two major themes: First, the term financial management reflects the book's approach to bank management. It means that maximizing shareholder value is the key concept while judgments about risk-return trade-offs and risk management provide operational guide lines. This approach reflects modern corporate financial management as opposed to simply describing what banks do. Second, because banks operate in the financial-services industry (FSI) and not in the more narrowly defined banking industry, they must have an expansive view of "where they are going" and "how they are going to get there"—two questions that must dominate any company's strategic planning. A planning prerequisite is to know where the bank is today, especially in terms of its valuation, profitability, and capital adequacy. With declining franchise value in the traditional business of funding loans with deposits, banks must have strategic, technology-based visions of ways to add value to be competitive in the FSI of the twenty-first century.

Several centuries ago Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher, achieved literary immortality and aptly anticipated modern banking in the FSI when he said:

"All is flux, nothing stays still. Nothing endures but change."

The sources of flux in banking have been numerous and sometimes volatile as reflected by changes in interest rates, exchange rates, and commodity prices. The new and improved TRICK provides a framework for understanding the process of change and the diffusion of financial innovations. It (TRICK) stands for

  • Transparency
  • Risk exposure
  • Information technology
  • Competition for customers
  • Kapital adequacy

The German spelling of capital gives TRICK its K(ick). Combined with rational self-interest, these driving forces of change generate financial innovation. Schematically,

TRICK + Rational Self-Interest => Financial Innovation

where rational self-interest refers to the pursuit of profitable investment opportunities. This model represents a framework for analyzing change and the important role of financial innovation in banking and the FSI. It also captures the notion of "first-mover advantages" in which innovative bankers strive to gain market share and enhance reputational capital rather than exploit cost advantages to charge monopoly prices.

One of the most important innovations in banking has been the development of tools for managing risk, a reaction to the volatility of the financial environment and the accompanying risk exposure—the R(isk) in TRICK. As a critical component of financial management, risk management is a major focus of this book. Risk management techniques range from traditional methods such as asset-liability management (ALM) and borrower credit analysis to more sophisticated off-balance sheet techniques such as the use of derivatives in the form of futures, forwards, options, and swaps for hedging, and the removal of risk through securitization. Derivatives are used mainly by the largest banks in the world but especially three giant U.S. financial or banking holding companies, namely J. E Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and Bank of America. Although interest rate and foreign-exchange swaps have been the dominant derivative contracts, credit derivatives have become the new kid on the trading block. Although they do not have the volume of swaps, they offer a new way of managing the oldest risk in banking—credit risk.

Securitization, which is the process of packaging loans for sale as securities, reflects one of the important "-izations" that is fundamentally changing banking and the FSI. Other important "-izations" include the globalization of world financial markets, which because of the domination of U.S. financial-services firms can, without too much exaggeration, be called Americanization; the institutionalization of savings into pension and mutual funds; the privatization of formerly state-owned enterprises; modernization in the form of new laws and regulations that eventually catch up with more rapidly changing market forces; and computerization, which has played a major role in the development of e-money, e-banking, and e-commerce.

The ability to adapt to change will determine who survives in the financial-services industry. For some large U.S. banks, adaptation in the early 1990s took the form of corporate restructurings including dividend cuts, reorganizations, and major charges against earnings for loan losses. Since then, major banks and their holding companies have been highly profitable, generated excess capital, and subsequently reduced their restructured capital positions by repurchasing common equity and by substituting more exotic hybrid securities (e.g., trust preferred stock) for common equity.

The consolidation trend in banking and the FSI, which traces to the early 1980s, accelerated during the mid to late 1990s. The high-water mark was the 1998 mega, cross-industry merger of Citicorp with Travelers Group to form Citigroup, a financial holding company in the true sense of the Gramm -Leach-Bliley (GLB) Act of 1999 (also known as Financial Services Modernization Act). This act is important because it removed the remaining outdated remnants of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. In addition, it mandates that if subsidiary banks of financial holding companies (FHCs) do not meet the standards of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), then their FHCs will be prohibited from expanding until they are met. The GLB Act also serves as a good example of the ongoing struggle between regulators and regulatees, formally known as the regulatory dialectic, which captures how thesis and antithesis clash and lead to an evolving synthesis. The synthesis becomes a new thesis and the struggle model ensures that restricted players always strive to circumvent regulatory prohibitions.

The GLB Act of 1999 also opened the door to bancassurance, which is the European business model for combining banking and insurance. These financial services, having been commingled in Europe for years, are just taking root in the United States. As of this writing, U.S. banking companies are not so much interested in underwriting insurance as they are in agencies to sell it and generate fee income.

Corporate restructurings and mergers are designed to make firms into "lean, mean fighting machines"; corpulent banks will go the way of the dinosaur or be gobbled up by competitors. Nevertheless, some consumers worry that consolidation will lead to a single monopoly bank or that large banks will dominate the financial landscape and only cater to wealthy clients. Banks that take on too much risk and miscalculate their downside vulnerability will find that market forces and "prompt corrective action" by regulators (as required by the FDIC Improvement Act of 1991) will prevent them from becoming "zombies." Also, banks that sell their products without proper disclosure, whether they be mutual funds sold to consumers, derivatives products sold to corporate clients, or loans made to subprime borrowers, will find limitations on caveat emptor or let the buyer beware. Both the marketplace and investors mandate transparency, the T in TRICK. Such transparency mandates full and prompt disclosure to maintain a firm's reputational capital.

Bank regulators demand, as they always have, that banks and their holding companies have adequacy capital or kapital adequacy, the K in TRICK. Federal safety net managers focus on a bank's safety and soundness as captured by the notion of capital adequacy. Of course, for banking organizations with publicly traded equity and debt, investors and creditors provide market discipline. However, for the 7,000 or so commercial banks that are local institutions or community banks, regulatory discipline still has an important role to play in monitoring bank behavior by ensuring that transparency, in the form of adequate disclosure, and equal opportunity exist.

Information technology, the I in TRICK, is dramatically changing the products and delivery systems of banking. E-money, e-banking, and ecommerce have come to the forefront allowing banks to reach customers through branchless banking using various e-devices, the most important of which is the Internet. Although some new banks are pure Internet firms or e-banks, most large banks offer both traditional and electronic delivery of financial services. In contrast, some community banks are simply traditional, local institutions, albeit with a homepage.

It is easy to see how the components of TRICK—transparency, risk, information technology, competition for customers, and kapital adequacy—are shaping the FSI and stimulating financial innovation.

This book deals with the financial management of commercial banks in this rapidly changing environment. It describes commercial banking from a finance perspective and applies principles of financial management to it. Because of the dramatic changes occurring in the FSI, a value-added approach is crucial today. To be successful, bank managers must be able to respond quickly and rationally to these changes. From a traditional perspective, banks act as intermediaries in the allocation of financial resources; a modern perspective treats them as factories engaged in information processing and deal making.

The theory and practice of financial management provide a framework that highlights the importance of making decisions that add value creators and eliminate value destroyers. Banks that achieve these objectives will not go the way of the dinosaurs.

THEMES AND STRUCTURE OF THE SIXTH EDITION

Just as downsizing has affected the corporate world, it has influenced the size of the sixth edition. Down from 20 chapters to 18, the book is slimmer and more efficient. Following three introductory chapters, which provide a comprehensive view of the forces of change in the FSI, the book continues in 5 parts and 15 chapters:

  • Bank Financial Statements, Risks, and Valuation (Chapters 4-6)
  • The Big Picture: Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Asset-Liability Management, and Capital Adequacy (Chapters 7-9)
  • Credit Risk: Traditional and Innovative Methods for Managing the Lending Function (Chapters 10-12)
  • The Liquidity, Operating, and Foreign-Exchange Risks of Banking and Securitization (Chapters 13-15)
  • The Roles of Regulation, Deposit Insurance, and Ethics in Shaping Banking and the Financial-Services Industry (Chapters 16-18)

In the spirit of David Letterman's Top 10 list and as a device for keeping the description of changes and themes manageable, consider the following 10 items for the sixth edition of this book:

10. Fewer chapters designed to be more user friendly but still include the standard pedagogical devices of the previous edition—learning objectives, a chapter theme, and lists of key concepts, words, and acronyms at the end of each chapter.
9. An acronym glossary to make the arcane world of ALM, LIBOR, CAMEL(S), FDIC, LCBO, BHC, and FHC less confusing, and author and subject indexes to make it easy to find who, what, where, and when.
8. New end-of-chapter questions and problems to test learning comprehension and challenge research, writing, and analytical skills.
7. Updated examples, boxed material, and mini cases that provide interesting illustrations of bank financial management in the real world of the FSI and cover the latest developments as exemplified by subprime lending, bancassurance, and the Basel capital requirement for operational risk.
6. An interweaving throughout the book of the critical role that financial innovation and risk management play in bank financial management. The latter is captured by the idea of a comprehensive measure of a bank's capital adequacy that encompasses all of a bank's risk exposures, including credit risk, interest rate risk, liquidity risk, foreign-exchange risk, sensitivity to market risk, and operational risk; the former is reflected in the forces of change that stimulate innovations as captured by TRICK.
5. A substantially revised chapter on technology in banking with emphasis on e-money, e-banking, and e-commerce.
4. Understanding that maximizing shareholder value requires bankers to develop strategic plans and policies, risk management techniques, and corporate checks and balances that are designed to add value creators and eliminate value destroyers.
3. An expanded analysis and description of the role of bank regulation, deposit insurance, the federal safety net, and the role of ethics in banking and the FSI.
2. A new, improved TRICK framework for understanding the process of financial innovation and the important role of rational self-interest.
1. Viewing modern banks as factories that engage in information processing and deal making highlights the latest technological and regulatory developments as captured, respectively, by the Internet and Internet banking and by the removal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999.

This book is designed for both academic and practitioner markets and for anyone interested in the financial management of commercial banks in the financial-services industry. As a college textbook, upper-division undergraduates and MBA students are the intended audiences. In addition to bank management courses, the book can be used in courses dealing with the management of financial institutions. Ph.D. students and practitioners will find the book to be both a good background text and a useful reference.

AUXILIARY TEACHING MATERIALS

The Instructor's Manual and Test Bank that accompanies this book has answers to the end-of-chapter questions and problems and a comprehensive test bank of objective and other questions. In addition, it contains chapter outlines, pedagogical suggestions, and updated chapter information if available. For adopters of the book, a set of lecture notes, in the form of PowerPoint® slides, is available.

Not an easy read.
By todd swanson
This book is not an easy read, but that's because it's a college level textbook and this stuff is not easy to understand. That being said, I think the banks have tried their best to obfuscate the truth. But as they say, the truth is out there.

Commercial Bank Financial Management
By A Customer
Commercial Bank Financial Management is considered as an informative and a comprehensive guide for both experts in the field and novice alike. Although it is a good read, I find the content of the book is a little bit out-of-date. There is not enough information on electronic banking persective as it is very important in today's banking world.

Not well written
By J.Ilog
The review by todd swanson (February 13, 2013) kind of sums up my feelings on the book.

I used this text in a banking course to fulfill a finance elective requirement for my MBA.

It was confusing to read and I had to use the other course text in order to complete my assignments.
