I rarely post reviews, but felt the need to for this book. Overall, I found the driving concept interesting but felt calling this a book (and in turn, charging a typical eBook price) is a bit misleading. Read Ed's site. Read 538. Save your $$$.

About the Author

Robert Elmer lives in the Seattle area with his wife and their little white dog, Farragut, who is named for the famous admiral. He is the author of over fifty books, most of them for younger readers (but some for grown-ups, as well). He enjoys sailing in the San Juan Islands, exploring the Pacific Northwest with his wife, and spending time with their three kids – along with a growing number of little grandkids.

Post WWII exciting Historical book for all ages.

It has happened The Iron curtain is up it is 1948 in Berlin wasn't it enought just to live thru WWII? There is not much to eat (again) as the Russians are limiting food to Berlin. Teenage cousins, Erich and Katirina are struggling to survive with their families under stressful post-war conditions in Germany. Erich sees the Americans(who he hates and distrusts due to the death of his father) have food and he aims to break in and see what he can get. His attenpt fails and he is caught and is warned not to try it again. Howerver when you are hungry you cannot be stopped so Katarina and Erich break in again hopefull this time to get some food.

The addition of the stories of the air drops of food to the people of Berlin from America softens some of the resentments. Candy and gum are dropped thus the name candy Bombers.

It was a difficult time for adults to live thru so you can imagine how hard it was was children and teens. This book is a real page turner and can be read quite quickly. Great to have on hand when your teen is home with the flu or cold this winter, better than the whole day in front of the TV.

The Cold War in Berlin was a hard time and this book is written in and interesting and entertaining manner so that young poeple get a hunger for history.

The Christian aspect to the book is not too pushy to turn away non beliveivers, there is prayer though.

I highly recommend this for teens and adults who love history, especially the WWII era.

My 9-Year Old Boy Liked It

I read this book with my son for a religious book report in 4th grade. It captures the reader's interest right away and continues to hold the reader's curiosity all the way through. There are chapters that jump ahead by weeks or months in the story line which was a little frustrating, but overall it is a good book to read. The religious aspect is very casual with few references to God, forgiveness and "love your enemy" lessons.

and it's been great. We've been reading it to her everyday since ...

When we were buying books for our little one, we wanted a mix of interactive and "regular" ones for her to read from. The interactive aspect is why we got this book, and it's been great. We've been reading it to her everyday since she was 2-3 months, and around month 6 she started pulling open the tabs that reveal the animals herself and then giving small "ooo!" exclamations. Very cute. The interesting thing I noticed with this book and a couple other interactive ones we have is that her dexterity seemed to improve a little more rapidly once she started turning the pages and opening the tabs. I also like the story line as it is logical/reasonable without being too strange. We also go to the zoo a lot with her, so the book serves to reminder her a bit of the different animals we've seen.

I would recommend this book and will continue to use it.

Audio version is ABRIDGED. :-(

If you're buying the Audible book...beware..it's abridged. I was following along with my physical book and found whole sentences left out on the audio version. I'm very disappointed by this. No where does it tell you on the sight that it's abridged.

Classic book, a bit yellowed with age, as expected of 1968 1st edition. The Teachings plus next two in series follow Don Juan's philosophy thru Southwest medicinal plants and culture and have provided me with spiritual sustenance and mentorship these past 40 years.

I purchased this one to enjoy in my leisure time

This book was a vital source of information when I was in the radio business. I've worn out two copies over the past twenty-plus years and am now on my third copy. Being a music lover with an appetite for knowledge of Top 40 chart history, I purchased this one to enjoy in my leisure time.

Thanks to Joel Whitburn and his staff for their diligence in compiling the chart information in this book. There are many variations of Billboard chart info books in print, but this is the most valuable and basic reference source available. It contains the info you need and the layout makes it easy to use. If you're into music research or just hungry for personal info about your favorite songs, this is the book you want. There has been a copy of this book in every radio control room I've ever stepped into. I honestly don't know what I would have done without this book and the valuable information it contains.

If You Love Top 40 Music This Book Is A MUST!

If you're a fan of Pop Music btwn 1955-2009 this is one of the BEST books ever to buy for yourself or as a gift. You'll hear a song on the radio you haven't heard in a long while, will open the book to find out where it charted and will find yourself 30 minutes later leafing through it looking up songs/bands you love. It's mind-blowing. Discovering that The Who only ever peaked at #9 while other one hit wonders only charted in the Top 40 once and peaked at #1? It's awesome. I own this book and have given it as a gift to a bunch of people and it's always a BIG hit. I've read that this Vol. (Vol. 9) is the last one to be printed. I also own Vol. 8 and that's just as great. Grab one of these (all of the ones I've purchased I bought used through Amazon) before they become even harder/more expensive to find. They're definitely worth it!

Veteran pundit hooks unpacks the explosive contents of Gwendolen Brooks's famous 1960 poem "The Pool Players: Seven at the Golden Shovel," taking her title from the opening of the poem. Like Brooks, hooks worries about the men in her life, black men experiencing crises of masculinity as prisoners (sometimes literally) of patriarchal imperialism. Hooks argues that black men have become chary of the simple goodness of being loved. From George Jackson's Soledad Brother to Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption, hooks finds that black men are taught violence and aggression as the keys to survival, an ideology that is reified in the lucrative gangs-and-guns side of hip-hop music and culture. Mainstream culture inculcates fear of black men, rewarding them most when they act out the "Native Son" role of brutal psychopath to confirm that fear, … la the intensive media coverage of the Nicole Brown Simpson murder. Malcolm X, moving away from black separatism toward a politics of global justice, was gunned down by "state-supported black-on-black violence." Hooks attacks the stereotype of the older black woman as powerful matriarch, fiercely independent of men. In reality, she says, "most black women have been more than willing to surrender control over their hard-earned resources to the men in their lives: father, brothers, lovers, and husbands." Hooks, a writer of extraordinary skill, pads out her insights with lengthy quotations from many sources, which thin but don't fully dilute her revolutionary message of love.

Hooks asserts that black men have been so dehumanized that they are in crisis emotionally and at risk within society. Yet she posits that the greatest threat to black life in America is patriarchal thinking and practices. She points to the current instability of black male employment in contrast to improved employment opportunities for black women, something many black men have trouble accepting because of the cultural dictates that men should dominate women. Too many black men face a host of troubling social dynamics--including alienation from their fathers and their children. Hooks advises them to emulate the many black women who turn to self-examination and self-love and to break with the macho demands and values of a patriarchal culture. Although hooks is heavily feminist in her critique, her recollections of her own family experiences and growing up black in America reflect extraordinary insight into both our cultural frailties and our potential. This book is life saving for any individual born into this American society. More importantly this book is soul saving for the blacks born into this American society. By challenging the patriarchy that reared us and "nurtured" us as black men we can journey into emotional wholeness. We can live on our own terms and maintain a new kind of masculinity.

I love this book. Not only does it have great photos with, when applicable, many different presentations of the same disease, but it also has brief clinical descriptions, treatment pearls, etc. It's written by a Brit, so some of the names/diagnoses are different than our terminology. All-in-all a great book. I'd buy it again.
